  • In this paper, a Ka-band LTCC (low temperature co-fired ceramic) narrow bandpass filter (BPF) is firstly presented. This BPF shows very narrow 3dB fractional bandwidth of 4.5 % centered at 28.7㎓. The advantages of multi-layered LTCC technology such as high integration and vertical stacking capabilities were employed to design three-dimensional interdigital end-coupled embedded microstrip narrow BPF. The difficulties in controlling the precise distance between two adjacent resonators in LTCC end-coupled BPF were overcome by locating the resonators on different layers. The measured insertion loss is 3dB at 28.7㎓, pass band is from 27.9 ㎓ to 29.2 ㎓, and the return loss in the pass band is less than 10 dB.

  • In this paper, we propose an advanced Ka-band satellite HD broadcasting system using scalable video coding technology. As already known, it is not so easy to achieve reasonable link availability on Ka-band because of the rain-attenuation effect, and in case of HD broadcasting service it's more difficult. To overcome that problem, we propose an hierarchical broadcasting system based on H.264 SVC technology. In this paper, we suggest a few types of system scenario to realize the concept. Those scenarios are including DVB-S and DVB-S2 and spatially scalable video stream is the source stream in all cases.

  • For Ka-band satellite communication system, a new flexible payload technologies which can compensate rain attenuation have to be developed. The Ka-band satellite output power control technology enables to adjust downlink output power of satellite payload in Ka-band (19.8 ~ 22.2 GHz). In this paper, we introduce multi-beam antenna with multi-port amplifiers for Ka-band flexible output power allocation system. We have designed multi-beam antenna with array-fed reflector to form 8 beams on the Korean Peninsula. The target EIRP per beam is more than 59 dBW. The system is designed to present 6 dB boost beams for rainfall areas. Individual beams were optimized by the excited amplitude and phase of feed elements of the feed cluster. The multi-port amplifier(MPA) is one of effective approaches for flexible power allocation in combination with multi-beam antenna. In case of using MPA in multi-beam system, the inter-port isolation characteristic of MPA is important parameter to avoid interference among the output ports. In this paper, we propose a new MPA structure that consists of two $4{\times}4$ Buttler matrixes and phase/amplitude controllable power amplifier modules.

  • We designed and manufactured Ka-band SSPA include drive amplifier and high power amplifier MMICs by $0.15{\mu}m$ GaN commercial process. Also, we fabricated main components micro-strip line to WR28 waveguide transition and WR28 wave guide power combiner for Ka-band SSPA. This Ka-band SSPA shows saturated output power 44.2 dBm, power added efficiency 16.6 % and power gain 39.2 dB at 29~31 GHz frequency band.

  • The performances of millimeter wave Power amplifier have been improved by using PBG (photonic bandgap structure) in this paper. The PBG structure has been optimized to obtain the lowpass characteristics in Ka band and employed at output port of Ka band power amplifier. The harmonics of the power amplifier have been suppressed by the PBG of output port and the proposed PBG has suppressed the second harmonic to 40dBc around 50 GHz. The improvements of IMD and PAE of the amplifier employing the PBG structure are obtained $15\%$ and $25\%$, compared with those of the conventional Ka band power amplifier, respectively.

  • In this paper, we implemented a Ka-band frequency synthesizer for millimeter wave seeker. we designed for high frequency resolution and frequency hopping response time in the digital synthesis method which uses DDS(Direct Digital Synthesizer). but frequency bandwidth was limited low frequency because DDS output frequency was limited 1/2 by system clock. thus, frequency synthesizer was converted to Ka-band using the frequency multiplier ${\times}4$ and local oscillator. proposed frequency synthesizer was bandwidth 500MHz, frequency switching time was $0.7{\mu}s$, spurious level was suppressed below -52dBc. phase noise was -99dBc/Hz at offset 100kHz and flatness was ${\pm}1dB$.

IF transceiver and RF up/down converter. The transceiver especially has 3 different waveform mode for target detection range. The transceiver had over 150 MHz bandwidth in Ka-band and 22 dBm output power. The receiver gain and noise figure was 30 dB and 4 dB respectively. The receive dynamic range was 65.28dB and amplitude imbalance and phase imbalance of I/Q channel was 0.3 dB and 1.8 degree respectively. The transceiver meets the required electrical performances through the individual tests.

  • This paper presents the design technique of output multiplexer(OMUX) for the Ka-band satellite transponder. Output multiplexer consists of low-pass filter(LPF), channel filter and manifold. Channel filters adopt dual-mode technique in design for mass and volume reduction and frequency response of channel filters is 4-pole elliptic response for high frequency selectivity. w-pass filters are designed to be of 13th order corrugated type for high rejection characteristic over reception band of satellite transponder. After initial design of channel filters and manifold, we optimized only a few design parameters for fast and easy optimization instead of optimizing all the design parameter. Measured results of a realized output umltiplexer for Ka-band satellite transponder show good agreement with the computed ones.
