  • Research outputs of science and engineering fields including Life Sciences were analyzed using KOSEF's Database. The total number of Life Sciences scientists participating in KOSEF's Database was 7,413(33.1 percent), and during the latest five years(2001 to 2005), the number of articles published in SCI(Scientific Citation Index) journals and Non-SCI journals by them was 47,740(37.7 percent) and 72,115(39.9 percent), respectively. The average number of articles per capita published in SCI journals during the latest five years was 5.0 in Biology, 4.1 in Agricultural Sciences, and 7.5 in Medical Sciences. The average number of articles per capita published in SCI journals within Life Sciences was 12.1 in Pharmaceutical Chemistry, 10.3 in Allergy and Immunology, 10.0 in Physiology and Pharmacology, 9.7 in Anatomy and Cell Biology, in order. The results of this survey will be used as a reference in comparisons of research output between Life Sciences and other sciences both in quality and quantity.

  • Research outputs of science and engineering fields including Earth Science were analyzed using KOSEF's Database. A total $312(1.5\%)$ Geoscientists participated in KOSEF's Database, and the number of articles they published in SCI (Science Citation Index) journals and Non-SCI journals during the last five years (1999 to 2003) was $1,026(0.2\%)\;and\;3,265(0.5\%)$, respectively. The average number of articles per capita published in SCI journals during the last five years was 3.3 in Geoscience, 4.0 in Mathematics, 57.6 in Physics, 60.4 in Chemistry, and 33.4 in Biology. The average number of articles per capita published in SCI journals within Geoscience was 9.6 in Environmental Geology, 4.6 in Stratigraphy and Sedimentology, 4.2 in Geochemistry, 3.6in Hydrology, 3.5 in Oceanography, and 3.2 in Mining Geology. The results of this survey will be used as a reference in comparing research outputs of Earth Science and other sciences, both in quality and quantity.

  • This research was conducted to make suggestions for the promotion of research activities in the Life Sciences field, and we evaluated the research funding trend and the present status of research funding offered by KOSEF in this field. Researchers in this field have received more research funding from the group-based programme than from the individual-based programme. Also, they have received less money (per project) than did researchers in other Science and Technology fields. The portion of research funds given to the Medical Sciences fields has markedly increased year by year, whereas the portion of funding given to the Agricultural Sciences and Biological Sciences fields has decreased annually. To encourage research activities in the Life Sciences field in Korea, the following actions and systems are required: 1) formulation of a mid-and a long-term research master plan, 2) development of a database on man power in related fields, 3) activation of top-down research topics, and associated increase of individual research grants, 4) development of special national programs for basic researches in Life Sciences, 5) organization of a committee for policy and planning within related societies, and 6) system development for fair evaluation of the results of research activities.

  • Agricultural sciences field in South Korea has many strong points such as numerous researchers, establishment of research infra-structure, excellence in research competitiveness and high technological level. However, there are also many weaknesses including insufficient leadership at related societies and institutes, deficiency of the next generation research group, and insufficiency in research productivity. There are many opportunities including increasing the importance of the biotechnological industry, activating international cooperation researches, and exploring the multitude of possible research areas to be studied. However, some threats still exist, such as pressure from the government of developed countries to open the agricultural market, the decrease of specialized farms, and intensification for researches to gratify economic and social demands. To encourage research activities in the agricultural sciences field in Korea, the following actions and systems are required: 1) formulation of a mid- and a long-term research master plan, 2) development of a database on the man power in related fields, 3) activation of top-down research topics, and associated increase of individual research grants, 4) development of special national programs for basic researches in agricultural sciences, 5) organization of a committee for policy and planning within the related societies, and 6) system development for the fair evaluation of the research results.
