  • Employees' knowledge contribution is one of the critical activities that maximize internal capability of the firm and facilitate organizational innovation by sharing scattered internal knowledge. This study integrates antecedents of knowledge contribution based on the theory of planned behavior(TPB). Utilizing TPB as a theoretical framework, expected reciprocity, subjective norm, and self-efficacy's direct effects on knowledge contribution were assessed. Additionally, interaction effects among expected reciprocity, subjective norm, and self-efficacy were explored. As the results of analysis, all the antecedents significantly influenced knowledge contribution. Interestingly, when the knowledge source's self-efficacy was high, the influence of expected reciprocity on knowledge contribution was decreased. Similarly, when the knowledge source's subjective norm for knowledge contribution was high, expected reciprocity's effect was weakened. This implies that when facilitating knowledge contribution, interaction effects among antecedents of knowledge contribution, as well as their direct effects, should be considered.

  • This study aims to investigate the effect of mentoring functions (career development, role modeling, and psychosocial function) on the motivation to adopt knowledge and the success of knowledge transfer in formal mentoring relations. There are considerable empirical investigation into the antecedents and consequences of mentoring, such as organizational commitment, organizational citizenship behavior, job satisfaction, In this paper, based on the relevant literatures, hypotheses are established and empirically tested that are about the effect of mentoring functions on the motivation to adopt knowledge, and the effect of motivation to adopt knowledge on the success of knowledge transfer. Using a sample of 287 service industry employees, the empirical results shows that career development and role modeling functions ware positively related to motivation to adopt knowledge, but psychosocial function was not significantly related. In addition, the motivation to adopt knowledge was positively related to the success of knowledge transfer. Based on these findings, implication and future direction are discussed.

  • An expert system executes the inference, based on the knowledge of specific domain. the reliability on the results of inference depends upon both the consistency and accuracy of knowledge. This is the reason why expert system requires the facilities which can practice an access to the various kinds of knowledge and maintain the consistency and accuracy of knowledge an maintain the consistency and accuracy of knowledge. This paper is to implement an expert system permitting an access of declarative and procedural knowledge in the knowledge base and in the data base. This paper is also to implement a knowledge acquisition system which adds the knowledge a only if its accuracy and consistency are maintained, after verifying the potential errors such as contradiction, redundancy, circulation, non-reachable rule and non-lined rule. In consequence, the expert system realizes a good access to the various sorts of knowledge and increases the reliability on the results of inference. The knowledge acquisition system contributes tro strengthening man-machine interface that enables users to add the knowledge easily to the knowledge base.

  • The purpose of the study is to develop an integrated knowledge structuring system for the domain of engineering, in which ontology-based literature mining, knowledge acquisition, knowledge integration, and knowledge retrieval are combined using XML-based tag information and ontology management. The system supports combining different types of databases (papers and patents, technologies and innovations) and retrieving different types of knowledge simultaneously. The main objective of the system is to facilitate knowledge acquisition and knowledge retrieval from documents through an ontology-based dynamic similarity calculation and a visualization of automatically structured knowledge. Through experimentations we conducted using 100,000 words economic documents reported in the "Go! Japan" project for analyzing Japanese industrial situation, and 100,000 words molecular biology Papers, we show the system is Practical enough for accelerating knowledge acquisition and knowledge discovery from the information sea.

  • Knowledge transfer among employees integrates individual knowledge scattered within a firm, thus increases organizational effectiveness. In particular, the role of knowledge broker, which enables knowledge sharing across multiple teams or subunits, is critical for the success of knowledge management. This study classified the types of knowledge broker that facilitates knowledge flows among team, and examined the influences of various intra- and inter-team social networks. Survey responses from 128 employees of four R&D teams were gathered and analyzed using partial least square structural equation modeling. The results of analysis showed that all types of inter-team networks(i.e., emotional closeness network, frequency of interaction network, and perceived expertise network) had significant influences on related knowledge brokerage behaviors. In case of intra-team networks, only the emotional closeness network showed significant influence. These results proved the necessity of managing various types of intra- and inter-team networks to encourage knowledge brokerage behaviors within a firm.

  • Managing knowledge effectively is a critical factor for the competitive power of a company. There are efforts to use knowledge as an important resource in many industrial areas and likewise the interest in knowledge management is growing in the construction industry. Nevertheless, there are limitations in the current capture and reuse of knowledge in the construction industry owing to the unique characteristics of the knowledge created during the processes of projects. The knowledge produced during the processes of construction projects is project-oriented, experiential and context specific and due to these characteristics the reuse of knowledge is difficult. In this research, we focus on capturing and identifying the characteristics of construction knowledge and propose a method to apply these characteristics in developing an ontology based construction knowledge retrieval system to improve construction knowledge retrieval and enhance knowledge reuse.

  • The knowledge of the narrative agent not only constitutes the content and meaning of the narrative itself, but is also closely related to the emotional response of the recipient. Also, the disparity of knowledge between narrative agents is an important factor in making a narrative richer and more interesting. But It tends to be treated as a sub-topic of narration theory or genre/style studies rather than an independent subject of narrative studies or criticism. In this paper, I propose a model that can systematically and quantitatively analyze the knowledge of narrative agents. The proposed model consists of the knowledge structure that represents a narrative, the knowledge state that expresses the knowledge of narrative agent as a degree of belief, and the knowledge flow that means changes in the knowledge state according to the development of events. In addition, the formal notation of the knowledge structure and a probabilistic inference model that could obtain the state of knowledge were proposed, and the knowledge structure and knowledge flow were analyzed by applying the model to the actual narrative. It is expected that the proposed model will be of practical help in the creation and evaluation of narratives.

  • This paper introduces an approach to an ontology-based knowledge framework for product life cycle management (PLM). Participants in a product life cycle want to share comprehensive product knowledge without any ambiguity and heterogeneity. However, previous knowledge management approaches are limited in providing those aspects. Therefore, we suggest an ontology-based knowledge framework including knowledge maps, axioms and specific knowledge far domain. The bottom level, the axiom, specifies the semantics of concepts and relations of knowledge so that ambiguity of the semantics can be alleviated. The middle level is a product development knowledge map; it defines the concepts and the relations of the product domain common knowledge and guides engineers to process their engineering decisions. The middle level is then classified further into more detailed levels, such as generic product level, specific product level, product version level, and product item level for PLM. The top level is specialized knowledge fer a specific domain that gives the solution of a specific task or problem. It is classified into three knowledge types: expert knowledge, engineering function knowledge, and data-analysis-based knowledge. This proposed framework is based on ontology to accommodate a comprehensive range of unambiguous knowledge for PLM and is represented with first-order logic to maintain a uniform representation.

  • Recently research interest in Knowledge Management (KM) has grown rapidly. Companies regard intellectual capital as important asset and strive to deploy KM in an organization to gain a competitive edge. Many organizations currently engage in knowledge management in order to leverage knowledge both within their organization and externally to their shareholders and customers. Most of the previous research related to KM are dedicated to investigate the role of information technology in extracting, capturing, sharing, coverting organizational knowledge. Knowledge workers, however, are paid less attention though they are the key players in KM activities such as knowledge creation, dissemination, capture and conversion. We regard knowledge workers as a major component of KM and starting point of understanding organizational knowledge activities. Therefore we adopt a method to understand and analyze knowldge workers' social relationships. In this paper we investigate Social Network Analysis (SNA) as a tool for analyzing knowledge network. We introduce the basic concept of SNA and suggest a framework for implementing knowledge network by explaining how SNA can be used for analyzing knowledge network. We also propose a numerical method for identifying knowledge workers using SNA after classifying knowledge workers. The suggested method is expected to help understanding key knowledge players within an organization.

  • Although knowledge transfer between two different parties occurs in IS development projects, the majority of prior studies focused on knowledge transfer from IT consultants to clients. Considering two parts of knowledge transfer in IS development projects, we must consider both 'where knowledge is transferred from' and 'where it is transferred to'. Therefore, in this study, we attempt to describe two different routes of knowledge transfer, such as knowledge transfer from an IT consultant to a client and knowledge transfer from a client to an IT consultant. In this regard, we have examined the effect of two different routes of knowledge transfer on system implementation success in IS development project. Specifically, we adopted the knowledge stock-flow theory to examine the causal relationship between IT consulting firms and clients in terms of knowledge transfer and eventual system implementation success. Survey data collected from 213 pairs of individuals (both clients and IT consultants) were used to test the model using three different analytic approaches such as PLS (partial least squares) and two types of mediated regression techniques. We found that knowledge transfers partially mediated both the relationships between IT consultants' IT skills (project members' business knowledge) and system implementation success. Furthermore, the effects of each knowledge transfer were distinguished by depending on the types of system, such as ERP or groupware. Our attempts have significant implications for both research and practice given the importance of effective knowledge transfer to IT consulting.
