  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the dietary quality of Korean females according to BMI, using the Korea National Health and Examination Survey data (KNHANES V-1). The study incorporated an individual-based, one-on-one interview with a cohort of 3,552 Korean females, including underweight, obese, and normal subjects, based on BMI calculation from 8,958 samples throughout the country. In this study, BMI between 18.5 and 25 was considered as normal, < 18.5 as underweight, and ${\geq}25$ as obese. We classified the subjects into three groups: the underweight group (n = 206), normal group (n = 2,353) and obese group (n = 993). The result of analysis of nutrient intake was a percentage of Korean RNI. Overall, calcium intake tended to be lower for groups with lower BMI. The result of dietary quality are as follows: For NAR analysis, all groups showed a less than 1.0 for all nutrient levels. In particular, with respect to calcium, all groups showed to have a lower NAR score than that of other nutrients; this was also the case for the Vitamin A. The average NAR score was 0.76 in the underweight group, 0.83 in the normal group, and 0.78 in the obese group. The results suggest the necessity of obesity-related nutritional education programs in Korea, particularly for Korean women.

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Women's bone health status is closely related with environmental factors and lifestyle factors. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the dietary risks of osteoporosis and osteopenia for Korean postmenopausal women. SUBJECTS/METHODS: The data from 1,433 subjects from the 2010 KNHANES were used and divided into three groups: normal, osteopenia, and osteoporosis group using bone mineral density (BMD). Nutrient intakes and food intake frequency were evaluated. Logistic regression analysis was applied to determine the odds ratios for osteoporosis and osteopenia. RESULTS: The RNI percentage of each nutrient and food intake frequency from 12 food groups decreased as bone mineral density status deteriorated. Risk for osteoporosis of low calcium (Ca) intake, under the EAR, showed an odds ratio of 2.13(95% CI; 1.26-3.61, P < 0.05). Higher intake frequency showed preventive effect from osteoporosis compared to lower intake frequency in such food group as dairy products (ORs 0.40, CI 0.21-0.75), beans (ORs 0.49, CI 0.29-0.83), seaweeds (ORs 0.55, CI 0.32-0.94), fish (ORs 0.56, CI 0.32-0.98), and fruits (ORs 0.42, CI 0.23-0.79) after adjusting for age. CONCLUSION: To prevent osteoporosis in later life, sufficient Ca intake and more frequent intakes of foods containing Ca such as dairy products, beans, fish, seaweeds, and fruits, which help in Ca absorption, should be stressed for Korean postmenopausal women.

  • Ramyen and Korean noodles (guksu) are popular foods in Korea and around the world. Since 1998, rice consumption in Korea has gradually decreased, whereas consumption of noodles has continuously increased. The purpose of this study is to assess the consumption of ramyen and Korean noodles of Koreans, using data from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) of 2007. Korean adults (>20) were selected to examine the associations between noodle consumption and food and nutrient intake and health status. SAS 9.1 and SUDAAN 9.1 were used for the data analysis. 10.3% of Korean adults consumed ramyen, and 15.4% consumed Korean noodles. The consumption of ramyen and Korean noodles were higher in men than in women, in lunch than in other meals, and in the lowest income quartile than the highest quartile. Ramyen and Korean noodle consumer groups consumed more grain products, seasonings, and oils than the nonconsumer group. The noodle group showed significantly lower systolic blood pressure than the non-consumer group. The noodle groups showed lower rates of hypertension and metabolic syndrome than the non-consumer group. From these results, we conclude that ramyen and Korean noodles may have positive health effects. More studies on the association between noodles and the health of Koreans and those in other countries should be done in the future.

  • Korean society is experiencing a very rapid change in population aging. Oral diseases, including dental caries and periodontal disease, are usually cumulative and make oral health worse with age. Preventing tooth loss through the prevention and treatment of caries and periodontal diseases are essential for retaining oral function later in life. This study aimed to identify the trend in oral health status among elderlies over 65 years old, using major oral health indicators of Health Plan 2020. The fifth, sixth, and seventh Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES V, VI, VII) were used in the present study to estimate the number of remaining natural teeth, the rate of 20 or more natural teeth, the rate of chewing difficulty, and the rate of oral health check-up of elderly. The number of remaining natural teeth increased from 15.6 in 2010 to 17.1 in 2015, and the rate of 20 or more natural teeth also increased from 45.8% in 2010 to 53.7% in 2015. The rate of chewing difficulty was similar but declined a little from 44.3% in 2010 to 42.9% in 2017. Finally, the rate of oral health check-ups of the elderly increased significantly from 12.2% in 2010 to 21.1% in 2017.

  • Family type is not only an important sociodemographic variable for health studies but also influences the health behavior and health condition of individuals. This study assessed a representative sample to see whether family type is associated with health behavior in Korean adults age 65 and older. This is a cross-sectional study of 9,535 Korean elderly who participated in the 2010-2012 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The subjects were classified as couple cohabitation, couple-offspring cohabitation, alone, or alone-offspring cohabitation. We assessed the relationship between family type and six health behaviors (smoking, high risk drinking, walking, oral examinations, health screenings, and influenza vaccinations) after controlling covariates. The "alone" classification had a significantly higher risk of no health screening, but was more likely to have an influenza vaccination than couples. Significant interactions between family type and healthy behavior were observed with oral health screening, influenza vaccination, and smoking {Odds ratio (95% confidence interval), 1.452 (1.066-1.980), 1.375 (1.083-1.747), 2.246 (1.604-3.146)}. There is a significant association between family type and healthy behaviors.
