  • The capability of real-time observation in TEM is quite useful to study dynamic phenomena of materials in a certain variable ambience. In performing the experiment, the choice of video recording program is an important factor to obtain high quality of movie streaming. Window Movie Maker (WMM) is generally recommended as a default video recording program if one uses "DV Capture" function in DigitalMicrograph$^{TM}$ (DM) software. However, the image quality does not often satisfy the condition for high-resolution microscopic analysis since the severe information loss in the final result occurs during the conversion process. As a good candidate to overcome this problem, Virtual-Dub is highly recommended since the information loss can be minimized through the streaming process. In this report, we demonstrated how useful VirtualDub works in a high-resolution movie recording. Quantitative comparison of the information quality between the images recorded by each software, WMM and VirtualDub, was carried out based on histogram analysis. As a result, the image recorded by VirtualDub was improved ~13% in brightness and ~122% in contrast compared with the image obtained by WMM at the same imaging condition. Remarkably, the gray gradation (meaning an amount of information) becomes wider up to ~115% than that of the WMM result.

  • The Wnt/${\beta}$-catenin signaling pathway is an evolutionarily conserved signaling network that is critical for embryonic development and adult tissue maintenance. In addition, aberrant activation of Wnt/${\beta}$-catenin signaling is implicated in the formation of various human diseases, including cancers. Thus, study of the underlying molecular mechanism of Wnt/${\beta}$-catenin signaling regulation is important to understand and treat diseases. Inhibition of aberrant Wnt pathway activity in cancer cell lines efficiently blocks their growth, highlighting the great potential of therapeutics designed to achieve this in cancer patients. Recently, protein kinases have emerged as key regulating components of Wnt/${\beta}$-catenin signaling. In this review, we provide the most recent information on Wnt/${\beta}$-catenin signaling, describe protein kinases involved in Wnt/${\beta}$-catenin signaling, and discuss their potential as drug targets.

  • Enhanced performances of high temperature superconducting (HTS) cable attract tremendous interests of the power utility. However, the reliability issue as the power system is still in controversy. To verify the reliability of HTS cable, 22.9 kV HTS cable system with the specification of 100 m length, 50 MVA capacity, and open refrigeration cooling system was laid on Gochang power testing center of KEPCO in 2006. During the test period, the current transport characteristics, the fundamental function of power cable, have been monitored and investigated precisely. In this paper, the heat loss and AC loss measured at various current load conditions are described and discussed.

  • To verify the applicability of High Temperature Superconducting (HTS) cable system into the real grid, the HTS cable system with the specification of 22.9 kV, 1250 A, 100 m long was installed in the second quarter of 2006, and the long term field test has been in progress at the KEPCO's Gochang power testing yard. Apart from the conventional power cable, HTS cable system requires sufficient thermo-mechanical strength to endure a large temperature difference. To date, the KEPCO HTS cable system was cooled down and warmed to the room temperature several times to investigate the influence of thermal cycles experimentally. Dielectric properties, critical current dependance and heat losses were evaluated at each step of thermal cycle. The test results showed that thermal cycle did not induce the degradation of dielectric properties, and the critical current decreased to 5 % of the initial value.
