The interaction between adsorbed water and hydrogen on metallic surfaces is important for fundamental understanding of heterogeneous catalysis and electrode surface reactions in acidic environment. Here, we explore a long-standing question of whether hydronium ion can exist or not on a Pt surface coadsorbed with atomic hydrogen and water. Studies based on mass spectrometry and infrared spectroscopy show clear evidence that hydrogen atoms are converted into hydrated protons on a Pt(111) surface. The preferential structures of hydrated protons are identified as multiply hydrated $H_5O_2{^+}$ and $H_7O_3{^+}$ species rather than as hydronium ions. The multiply hydrated protons may be regarded as two dimensional zundel ($H_5O_2{^+}$) and Eigen cation ($H_7O_3{^+}$) in water-metal interface. These surface-bound hydrated protons may be key surface intermediates of the electrochemical interconversion between adsorbed hydrogen atoms and solvated protons.
The meachanism for cutting epoxy resins specimens which were specially provided was experimentally investigated to obtain a fine surface finish. the specimens were cut the three-dimensional undrer dry conditions using a lathe. the relationship between the topography of the cut surface due to the change rate of temperature of the cutting condition using sintered carbides (P20, K10, KT150) was investigated. the main results obtained are as follows: 1) The change rate of temperature of the cutting edge is increased in nearly proportion ot cutting speed feed rate depth of cut. 2)The profile of surface roughness were regulated k10 but irregulated P20 KT150. 3) The surface roughness value decreased K10 rather than P20 KT150. 3) The surface roughness value decreased K10 rather than P20 KT 150.4)The cutting resistance increased thrust force rather than cutting force due to the visco-elastic material of epoxy resins.
Transparent aluminum oxide films were deposited on polycarbonate (PC) substrates by inductively coupled plasma (ICP) assisted reactive sputtering. the oxygen flow rate was regulated by controlling the target voltage with a proportional integrate derivative controller. The PC substrate was treated with plasma prior to the deposition in order to the enhance the adhesive strength of the $Al_2O_3$ film. The characteristics of hardness, structure, density, transmittance, deposition rate, surface roughness and residual stress were investigated to estimate the possibility for the hard coating.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM. A few of studies which compared and continuously measured the stability of various surface treated implants in the same individual had been performed. PURPOSE. We aim to find the clinical significance of surface treatments by observing the differences in the stabilization stages of implant stability. MATERIAL AND METHODS. Eight different surface topographies of dental implants were especially designed for the present study. Machined surface implants were used as a control group. 4 nano-treated surface implants(20 nm $TiO_2$ coating surface, heat-treated 80 nm $TiO_2$ coating surface, CaP coating surface, heat treated CaP coating surface) and 3 micro-treated surface implants [resorbable blast media(RBM) surface, sandblast and acid-etched(SAE) surface, anodized RBM surface] were used as experiment groups. All 24 implants were placed in 3 adult dogs. $Periotest^{(R)}$ & ISQ values measured for 8 weeks and all animals were sacrificed at 8 weeks after surgery. Then the histological analyses were done. RESULTS. In PTV, all implants were stabilized except 1 failed implants. In ISQ values, The lowest stability was observed at different times for each individual. The ISQ values were showed increased tendency after 5 weeks in every groups. After 4 to 5 weeks, the values were stabilized. There was no statistical correlation between the ISQ values and PTV. In the histological findings, the bone formation was observed to be adequate in general and no differences among the 8 surface treated implants. CONCLUSIONS. In this study, the difference in the stability of the implants was determined not by the differences in the surface treatment but by the individual specificity.
It is improtant that performing prophylaxis procedure on an infected implant surface in order to treat peri-implantitis should not change the surface roughness and composition, so that the surface can be recovered to almost same condition as initial implant surface. This thesis, therefore, studied an effect of various oral hygiene instrument on implant surface. A surface roughness measurement instrument and an infection electron microscope were used to observe a change on surface. The purpose of this study was to obtain a clinical guidelines during implant care and peri-implantitis treatment. The result were as follows 1. Ra values (surface roughness value) at experimental group 1, group 2, and group 5 were increased significantly as compared with comparison group(p<0.05). 2. When compared experimental group 1 with each experimental groups at which prohylaxis procedure was performed, mean values of Ra at experimental group 2, group 3, group 6, and group 7 were decreased significantly(p<0.05). 3. Mean value of Ra was lowest at experimental group 2, and highest at experimental group 2, and highest at experimental group 5. 4. Analysis of SEM showed that was significant surface change at experimental group 2, group 3, group 4, group 5, and group 6 as compared with comparison group(X1000). 5. Analysis fo EDX showed that a quantity of Ti on surface for experimental group 6 was very similar to that for comparison group. In conclusion, air-powder abrasive and citric acid, plastic instrument are safe methods to use for performing prophylaxis procedure on implant care or for cleaning and sterilization process on treatment of peri-implantitis, based on the result that those method did not affect implant surface roughness and Ti composition.
In this study, surface characteristics of dental implant fixture with various manufacturing process have been researched using electrochemical methods. The dental implant fixture was selected with 5 steps by cleaning, surface treatment and sterilization with same size and screw structure; the 1st step-machined surface, 2nd step-cleaned by thinner and prosol solution, 3th step-surface treated by RBM (resorbable blasting media) method, 4th step-cleaned and dried, 5th step-sterilized by gamma-ray. The electrochemical behavior of dental implant fixture has been evaluated by using potentiostat (EG&G Co, 2273A) in 0.9% NaCl solution at $36.5{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. The corrosion surface was observed using field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The step 5 sample showed the cleaner and rougher surface than step 3 sample. The step 5 sample of implant fixture treated by RBM and gamma sterilization showed the low corrosion current density compared to others. Especially, the step 3 sample of implant fixture treated by RBM was presented the lowest value of corrosion resistance and the highest value of corrosion current density. The step 3 sample showed the low value of polarization resistance compared to other samples. In conclusion, the implant fixture treated with RBM and gamma sterilization has the higher corrosion resistance, and corrosion resistance depends on the step of manufacturing process.
In this work, we synthesized superhydrophobic coatings by chemical surface functionalization of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). This was accomplished through the radical polymerization of 3-(trimethoxysilyl) propyl methacrylate modified MWCNTs and fluoro acrylate/methyl methacrylate. The chemical compositions and microstructures of the prepared MWCNT surface were investigated using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, and scanning electron microscopy, respectively. The wettability of the MWCNTs surface was determined through contact angle assessments in different liquids. The resulting surface exhibited a water contact angle of $157.7^{\circ}$, which is clear evidence of its superhydrophobicity. The 3D MWCNT networks and the low surface energy of the -C-C- and -C-F- groups play important roles in creating the superhydrophobic surface of the MWCNTs.
An on-line quality control of hot steel products is one of the important issues in the steel industry because of cost minimization. In recent years, relative depth information of surface defects is increasingly required for strict quality control. In this paper, a 3D shape reconstruction scheme for defects on a hot steel surface based on a multi-spectral photometric stereo method is proposed. After simultaneously illuminating a hot steel surface by using vertical/horizontal linearly polarized lights of green and blue light sources, the corresponding 4 images are obtained. The photometric stereo method is then applied with the aid of a GPU (Graphic Processing Unit) to reconstruct the shape of the target surface based on these images. The proposed scheme was validated through experiments.
This paper presents an experimental investigation of friction and wear characteristic with respect to patterns occurring on the surface of 3D printed polymer products by fused deposition modeling method. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of the patterns and sliding directions on the tribological properties of 3D printed polymer surface. A cubic specimen was printed using polylactic acid filament as the printing material. Friction tests were conducted for different directions with respect to the patterns that were generated on the top and the side surfaces of the specimen, by using a ball-on-reciprocating type tribotester. SUJ2 bearing ball of which the diameter was 11 times greater than the width of the largest pattern was used as the counter surface to assess the frictional behavior. Friction tests were conducted on the top and the side surfaces with respect to the patterns in 3 (0°, 45°, 90°) different directions respectively. Coefficient of friction increased as cycles increased in all cases. The results of the tests showed that the lowest coefficient of friction was measured with the 45° sliding direction on the side surface. The wear rate was the lowest at 45° sliding direction on the side surface, while it was the highest at 0° sliding direction on the top surface. Coefficient of friction of about 0.45 was determined to be the converging value on the top compared to the side surface.
Statement of the problem. The fracture of acrylic resin dentures remains an unsolved problem. Therefore, many investigations have been performed and various approaches to strengthening acrylic resin, for example, the reinforcement of heat-cured acrylic resin using glass fibers, have been suggested over the years. But problems such as poor workability, rough surface, poor adhesion of glass fiber resin complex are not solved yet. Purpose. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of short glass fibers on the transverse strength of heat-polymerized denture base acrylic resin and roughness of resin complex after abrasion test. Material and methods. To avoid fiber bunching and achieve even fiber distribution, glass fiber bundles were mixed with acrylic resin powder in conventional mixer with a non-cutting blade, to produce the glass fiber($10{\mu}m$ diameter, 3mm length, silane treated) resin composite. Glass fibers were incorporated at 0%, 3%, 6% and 9% by weight. Transverse strength were measured. After abrasion test, surface roughness was evaluated and scanning electron microscope view was taken for clinical application. Results. 1. 6% and 9% incorporation of 3mm glass fibers in the acrylic resin enhanced the transverse strength of the test specimens(p<0.05). 2. Before abrasion test, incorporation of 0%, 3%, 9% glass fiber in the resin showed no dirrerence in roughness statisticaly(p>0.05). 3. After abrasion test, incorporation of 0%, 3%, 6% glass fiber in the resin showed same surface roughness value statistically(p>0.05). 4. In SEM, surface roughness increased as the percentage of the fibers increased. 5. In the areas where glass fiber bunchings are formated, a remarkably high roughness was noticed. Conclusion. 6% and 9% addition of silane-treated short glass fibers into denture base acrylic resin increased transverse strength significantly. Before and after abrasion test, incorporation of 0%, 3%, 6% glass fiber in the resin showed same surface roughness value statistically.
