We investigated the growth-inhibitory activities of cosmetics and their preservatives against pathogens and resident skin bacteria. Of the tested cosmetics, preservatives such as parabens, 1,2-hexanediol, phenoxyethanol-contained toner, emulsion, cream and baby cream exhibited potent antibacterial effects against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Parabens, 1,2-hexanediol and phenoxyethanol inhibited the growth of pathogens, as well as skin-resident bacteria such as Staphilococcus epidermidis, Shigella flexneri, Enterobacter aerogenes and so on. The application of a basic cream containing phenoxyethanol to human skin was shown to disturb the skin microbiota: at the phylum level, Proteobacteria increased and at species level, 4P004125_s increased and Propionibacterium humerusii decreased. Based on these findings, parabens, 1,2-hexanediol and phenoxyethanol have antimicrobial activity and cosmetics containing phenoxyethanol may disturb skin microbiota.

Cotton xanthate, which was obtained by treating cotton with carbon disulfide in alkaline solution, was treated with the solution of polyvalent metal ions to produce cotton xanthate-metal chelates. This chelation reaction was readily and simply achieved, and antimicrobial agents with suitable structures could subsequently be coupled to the chelate with ease at moderate pH values and in aqueous solution. Metal ions used in present work include Cu(II), Zn(II) and Fe(III). Tetracycline, streptomycin, neomycin and pyrithion were used as antimicrobial/antifungal agents. Antibacterial activities were measured employing ditch plate method against G(+) Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococus faecalis, and G(-) Escherichia coli, Enterobacter aerogenes, and the fungus, Aspergillus niger. All the cotton xanthate-metal-antimicrobial agent chelates exhibited activities whereas the cotton xanthate-metal chelates themselves were inactive. Considering the extensive washing procedures and results from control experiments, possibility of the involvement of physical adsorption for the binding of drugs could be excluded.

Enterobacter sp. producing -$\beta$-galactosidase with high transgalactosylation activity was isolated from dairy wastewater. The isolate had common biochemical features to E. aerogenes and E. cloacae. Enzyme production increased as the cell mass increased with optimum enzyme activity of 0.21 Unit/mg-protein (o-nitro-phenyl-$\beta$ -D-galactoside (ONPG) as substrate) until 8 hr of culture. Whole cells permeabilized by toluene were used to produce galacto-oligosaccharide. Optimum toluene concentration, temperature and pH for -$\beta$-galactosidase activity of permeabilized whole cells were 10% (v/v), $50^{\circ}C$ and 6.0, respectively. A maximum of 38% (w/w) of galacto-oligosaccharide was obtained with lactose concentration of 20% (w/w) at $40^\{\circ}C$ and pH 6.0.
Multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii and Pseudomonas aeruginosa are highly dangerous nosocomial pathogens, cause the symptoms of skin infections, pressure sores, sepsis, blood stream and wound infections. Unfortunately, these pathogens are immune to the most common antibiotics, such as, carbapenem, aminoglycoside and fluoroquinolone. Therefore, it is imperative that new and effective antibiotics be developed. In the present study, the antimicrobial effects of Aloe vera MAP (modified Aloe polysaccharide) on Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli and Enterobacter aerogenes, and clinical Pseudomonas aeruginosa and clinical Acinetobacter baumannii were comprehensibly investigated. Prior to the growth inhibition effect measurement and antibiotic disc diffusion assay on gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria and selected multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acinetobacter baumannii, antimicrobial resistance screening was performed for the multidrug-resistant bacteria obtained from clinical isolates. The results for showed the Aloe vera MAP had a concentration-dependent effect on all of examined bacteria, particularly on Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant experiments were also performed dose dependently effects to confirm the beneficial physiological effects of Aloe vera MAP.
In this study, 22 clinical isolates of Enterobacteriaceae including Citrobacterfreundii (6 strains), Enterobacter cloacae (5 strains), Enterobacter aerogenes (3 strains), Serratia marcescens (7 strains) and Pantoea spp. (1 strain) were investigated for the biofilm forming ability and biosynthesis of curli and cellulose. Biofilm forming ability was the highest among the isolates of E. cloacae and the lowest among the isolates of E. aerogenes. The expression of the biofilm-forming extracellular matrix components, cellulose and curli fimbriae, was examined by Congo-red (CR) staining and calcofluor staining methods. PCR screening for the presence of curli gene (csgA) revealed that 4 strains of E. cloacae and 1 strain of C. freundii carried the csgA, showing a good correlation between the phenotypic detection of curli fimbriae by CR staining method and the genotypic detection of curli gene by PCR in E. cloacae.

Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the clinical features of recurrent urinary tract infection (UTI) in children with vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) and to compare the causative uropathogen and antibiotic susceptibility between the first and recurrent UTI episodes. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of children with VUR who had recurrent UTI. Group 1 included patients in whom the same pathogen caused the first and recurrent UTI episodes. Group 2 included patients in whom different pathogens caused the first and recurrent UTI episodes. Results: During a 13-year study period (2005-2018), 77 children with VUR experienced at least one episode of UTI. Among these, 47 patients (61.0%) had recurrent UTI. Of the children with recurrent UTI, 19 (40.4%) were in group 1 and 28 (59.6%) were in group 2. Escherichia coli was the most commonly isolated uropathogen (n=37; 39.4%) in both episodes of recurrent UTIs, followed by Klebsiella pneumoniae (n=18; 19.1%), Enterococcus faecalis (n=14; 14.9%), and Enterobacter aerogenes (n=7; 7.4%). Although the difference was not significant, the rate of resistance to the antibiotics ceftazidime, piperacillin/tazobactam, and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole increased in patients with the second episode of E. coli recurrence in group 1, and that to cefotaxime, ceftazidime, piperacillin/tazobactam, and meropenem increased in children with the second episode of E. aerogenes recurrence in group 1. Conclusions: When selecting empirical antibiotics for recurrent UTI in children with VUR, it is important to consider that the pathogen and antimicrobial susceptibility of the previous UTI are not always the same in recurrent UTIs.
In order to know the main causative agent and distribution of the agents in Gram-negative bacillus infections of bovine udders, one hundred and forty-eight cultures of Gram-negative bacilli isolated from clinical cases of mastitis during lactation over a period of 2 years in 6 herds of 180 Holstein cows were studied. Escherichia coli occupied 54.7% of the isolates was the most frequently isolated Gram-negative bacillus. 30 of the isolates (20.3%) were Enterobacter aerogenes, but Enterobacter cloacae was not isolated. Remaining isolates were Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus spp., Preudomonas aeruginosa and Alcaligenes faecalis. Most of the isolates (75.0%) were isolated from rear quarters.
The fungal strain SW-3 having antimicrobial activity was isolated from soil of crucified plants in Pocheon, Kyungki-Do, Korea. Strain SW-3 was identified as Alternaria brassicicola by its morphological characteristics, and confirmed by the analysis of the 18S gene and ITS regions of rDNA. The fungus showed a similarity of 99% with Alternaria brassicicola in the 18S rDNA sequence analysis. A. brassicicola has been reported to produce an antitumor compound, called depudecin. We found that strain SW-3 produced antimicrobial metabolites, in addition to depudecin, during sporulation under different growth conditions. The metabolite of the isolated fungus was found to have strong antifungal activity against Microsporium canis and Trichophyton rubrum, and antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aerogenes. The amount and kind of metabolites produced by the isolate were affected by growth conditions such as nutrients and growth periods.
Antimicrobial susceptibility of 157 Gram-negative bacilli (90 Escherichia coli. 30 Enterobacter aerogenes, 18 Klebsiella pneumoniae, 12 Proteus spp., 3 Pseudomonas aeruginosa and 4 Alcaligenes faecalis) isolated from infected bovine udders was determined by the plate dilution method. Gentamicin and oxolinic acid at a concentration of $12.5{\mu}g/ml$ were very active to all of 157 Gram-negative bacilli tested, and 98% of these strains were susceptible to nalidixic acid at a concentration of $25{\mu}g/ml$. Most of the 90 Escherichia coli strains were inhibited by chloramphenicol, ampicillin and carbenicillin and carbenicillin at a concentration of $12.5{\mu}g/ml$. None of the Klebsiella pneumoniae strains were inhibited at a concentration of $50{\mu}g/ml$ of ampicillin and carbenillin, whereas all the species of Proteus resisted a concentration of $50{\mu}g/ml$ or higher tetracycline. All the 3 strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa were highly resistant to streptomycin, kanamycin, Ampicillin, chloramphenicol, tetracycline and nalidixic acid.
Three kinds of samples, Trachpenalus curiviostris, Astroconger myriaster and Cantherines modestus which were pre-treated in a processing plant were frozen at $-40^{\circ}C$ in a contact freezer and stored for 32 days. The numbers of general bacterium, coliforms and E. coli were measured at 8 day intevals during frozen storage and the isolated strains was classified. The results are as follows; 1. The numbers of coliforms and E. coli in the samples before freezing were much higher, than those during frozen storage and it tended to decrease. 2. General bacteria showed little change in number before and after being frozen. Among 97 strains of isolated coliforms, only 4 strains of K. aerogenes I ana 4 strains of K, cloacae were classified and the rest was not determined. 3. Ninety percent of coliforms was found to be psychrotrophic coliforms, which were able to grow at $5^{\circ}C$ within a week. 4. Vibrio and Pseudomonas were superior in number before freezing while Flavobacterium cytophaga and Moraxella were superior during frozem storage.
