  • A study on the measurement of alpha activity in ground air has been carried out using CA 80-15 and LR 115-1 cellulose nitrate nuclear track detectors. The detection efficiency of the detectors were determined by making use of an $^{241}Am$ alpha source of $0.1{\mu}Ci$ in activity under a known geometrical arrangement. For the field measurement of alpha activity of emanated radon and its progeny in ground air two different radon cups were installed for a certain period of time in two neighbouring ground holes of about 15 cm in diameter and 45 cm in depth. Of the two radon cups one kept closed space during the detecting period, while the other kept open space with a hole enabling the air to ventilate. The etched tracks were read out by a microscope and the results obtained through statistical analysis were evaluated in terms of alpha activity per unit volume of air.

  • The experimental study was carried out to evaluate the performance of underplanted Pinus koraiensis 2-2 seedlings in the closed canopy natural deciduous forest. Overstory density effects on seedling survival and growth were assessed 7 years after underplanting. Seedling survival rate was 80%, average height was 0.9m with minimum of 0.3m and maximum of 2.1m, and average diameter at butt end was 1.7cm with minimum of 1.4cm and maximum of 3.5cm. Compared with the growth rate of the pine plantation after clearcutting, the growth performance of underplanted pine seedlings was so poor that the height growth was less than 30% and diameter growth was less than 20%. Even though the Pinus koraiensis seedlings would be shade tolerant, the establishment and performance of underplanted Pinus koraiensis seedlings could be promoted by more than 50% of canopy regulation that provide adequate light at the forest floor and should exhibit a strong positive response following overstory removal by tending operation.

  • In this paper a realistic bounding method for flooding analysis following rupture of large size of thanks and piping is defined. Mass and energy release during main feedwater line break accident is analyzed with RETRAN code. It is modeled that the main feed water control valve is closed in 5.0 seconds after reactor trip. In result of the analysis, largest mass and energy is discharged at 70% reactor power. The flood sources for main feedwater room are calculated when piping failure occurs in the high energy line and medium energy line. Based on the result of flood level (1.43m), it is investigated that all of the safety-related environmental qualification equipments are well located above the flood level.

  • This experiment was performed to study the effect of prostaglandin $E_2$ on tooth movement and root resorption in orthodontically treated cats. Twenty five cats were divided into five groups and closed coil springs delivered 80gm were stretched between upper canine and 3rd premolar. $10{\mu}g$ of $PGE_2$ was injected locally in the submucosal area of the upper right canine, while the left side served as a control and was injected saline 0.1ml. The distance between canine tip and central cusp tip of the 3rd premolar was measured. Scanning electron photomicrographs were made of the coronal half of the distal root surface of canines and cemental craterings were observed and quantified using point-counting volumetry. Data were analyzed by 2-way ANOVA and paired t-test. The results were as follows: 1. The rate of tooth movement of the $PGE_2$ side was increased, particularly at 1 day, compared with the control side. 2. The rate of tooth movement was minimum from 7 days to 10 days. 3. The resorption of root surface of the $PGE_2$ side was decreased from 4 days to 10 days, compared with the control side.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the root resorption pattern in incisors in dog under intrusive orthodontic loadings of various magnitude and duration. Intrusive forces were generated by closed coil springs. Force magnitudes were 15-30gm, 50-60gm and 80-110gm. Durations were continuous and intermittent. Intermittent duration was applied at intervals of 12 hours. The readjustment of the force was done every 4 days. The forces were maintained for 30 days. All specimens were decalfied, embedded in paraffin and stained with hematoxylin-eosin stain. Observations were made with light microscope. The following results were obtained; 1. The continuity of root surface was ceased in all, except intermittent forced teeth with 25gm. 2. The root resorptions, cementoclasts and cemental lacunae, were increased around periapical regions and the destructive scope of bone was deeply extended as the exerted orthodontic forces increased. 3. It was inspected that, under the same forces, root resorption and bone destruction were more deeply appeared in the continuously forced teeth than the intermittently forced ones. 4. All of the alveolar bone, showed direct and undermining bone resorptions.

  • The author analyzed the morphologic changes of bone structures from 1256 radiographs of 314 patients with temporomandi.bular joint arthrosis, which were obtained by the oblique-lateral projection and orthopantomography. The interrelations of the bone changes and clinical symptoms were examined. Also, the positional relationships of condylar head, articular fossa and articular eminence in the mouth open and closed state were observed in the patients with bone changes. The results were as follows; 1. The most frequent bone change in the TMJ arthorsis was eburnation of cortical bone (35. 64%) of total cases). Then came bone surface erosion and localized radiolucency (26.18%), marginal proliferation (9.7%) and flattening of articular surface (9.58%) in that order. 2. The most frequent site of bone change was articular eminence (41.70%). The came condylar head (21.09%) and articular fossa (20.73%) in that order. 3. In the patients with bone changes, their clinical symptoms were pain (51.55%), clicking sound during mandibular movement (37.71%) and limited mandibular movement (10.73%). In the patients complaining pain, their radiographs showed eburnation of cortical bone (30.68%), bone surface erosion and localized radiolucency (27.45%) and flattening in the (30.68%), bone surface erosion and localized radiolucency (27.45%) and flattening of articular surface (10.68%). 4. The condylar positional changes in the TMJ arthrosis patients with bone changes were as follows: in the mouth closed !tate, there were the widening of joint space in 624 cases (50.00%), the narrowing of joint space in 543 cases (43.47%) and bone on bone relatioships in 82 cases (6.57%). In the mouth open state, there were forward positioning of the condyle in 332 cases (28.55%), limitation of movenent in 332 cases (28.55%), bone on bone relation- ships in 248 cases (21.31%) and downward positioning of condyle in 217 cases (18.66%). bone on bone relationships in 243 cases (21.32%) and downward positioning of condyle in 217 cases (18.66%). 5. In the TMJ arthrosis patients with bone changes, 1249 cases of abnormal condylar position in the mouth closed state and 1163 cases of abnormal condylar position in the mouth open state could be interpreted. so, for the radiographic interpretation of TMJ arthrosis, the reading of condylar positional changes as well as that of bond changes should be performed and their interrelations should be profoundly considered.

  • This study was conducted to analyze the water consumption in closed transplants production system (CTPS) for the production of quality transplants and to investigate the effect of relative humidity on the water balance in CTPS. Potato (Solanum tuberosum L. cv. Dejima) plug seedlings were grown for 15 days at air temperature of 20$^{\circ}C$, relative humidity of 70%, photoperiod of 16/8 h, and photosynthetic photon flux (PPF) of 200 ${\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-l}$ following rooting for 5 days in CTPS. Amount of humidified, dehumidified, irrigated and evapotranspirated water were 67.9 kg${\cdot}m^{-2},\;196.9{\cdot}m^{-2},\;44.3\;kg{\cdot}m^{-2},\;33.5\;kg{\cdot}m^{-2}$, respectively. Water content of media and plants were 1.2 kg${\cdot}m^{-2},\;6.9\;kg{\cdot}m^{-2}$, respectively. Three relative humidity levels of 60, 70, and 80% were provided to analyze the effect of humidity on the water balance in CTPS. Amount of humidified, dehumidified, irrigated, evapotranspiratad water and water contents of media and plants increased with increasing relative humidity. Since the water consumption required to produce plug seedlings in CTPS dec1eased with decreasing relative humidity, the available water utilization efficiency of CTPS increased with decreasing relative humidity. CTPS showed high available water utilization efficiency of 0.92 - 0.97 if dehumidified water in CTPS was recycled. The development of CTPS with recycling system of dehumidified water will not only reduce the water consuming for the production of transplants but contribute to the establishment of plant production economizing in water consumption.

  • To develop the composting system to reduce the use of bulking agent, continuous composting was performed with farmer scale facility, The plant comprises a horizontal pit reactor closed inside a greenhouse and equipped with a turning machine moving on rails. The pit was 9m wide and 50m long and the maximum height of loaded materials was $1.8m^2$. The materials remained in the reactor for 5 months. During the composting process, temperature and water content measured and water balance was evaluated. The reaction temperature of composting was changed $30{\sim}50^{\circ}C$ and high in the middle and low in under composting piles. The moisture contents of the compost were approximately 70% during the experiment. The amount of effluent was 10.6% and $3.16m^3$ of pig slurry per $1m^3$ of bulking agent was treated during continuous composting process. BOD and SS reduction of the effluent in continuous composting was 86.5% and 92.2%, respectively. Indoor relative humidity in night time was changed between 80 and 100%.

  • The results of conventional operative resection of diffuse subaortic stenosis[tunnel subaortic stenosis] have been less than satisfactory. We have performed modified Konno operation to enlarge the outflow tract of both ventricle with a patch in three patients with diffuse tunnel subaortic stenosis in the department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Seoul National University Children`s Hospital. Preoperative left ventricular aortic pressure gradients were 135 mmHg, 50 mmHg, 80 mmHg respectively in these patients. After right ventriculotomy, the septotomy was done and extended beyond the limit of the stenosis and fibrous and/or muscular tissue was removed from each edge of septal incision. After adequate widening of the tunnel subaortic stenosis with various patches, right ventricle was closed primarily or with prosthetic patches successfully. One patient who was diagnosed as complete atrioventricular septal defect had complete AV block preoperatively and was implanted permanent pacemaker, and others who were sinus rhythm preoperatively have no serious postoperative rhythm disturbance. One patient developed mild postoperative aortic insufficiency and one who had preoperative aortic insufficiency has still same grade of aortic insufficiency after operation. All had good postoperative hemodynamics without any postoperative residual pressure gradient.

  • Single Stage To Orbit (SSTO) missions which require its engines to be operated at varying back pressure conditions, use engines operate at high combustion chamber pressures (more than 100bar) with moderate area ratios (AR 70~80). This ensures that the exhaust jet flows full during most part of the operational regimes by optimal expansion at each altitude. Aero-spike nozzle is a kind of altitude adaptation nozzle where requirement of high combustion chamber pressures can be avoided as the flow is adapted to the outside conditions by the virtue of the nozzle configuration. However, the thrust prediction using the conventional thrust equations remains to be a challenge as the nozzle plume shapes vary with the back pressure conditions. In the present work, the performance evaluation of a new aero-spike nozzle is being carried out. Computational studies are carried out to predict the thrust generated by the aero-spike nozzle in varying back pressure conditions which requires the unsteady pressure boundary conditions in the computational domain. Schlieren pictures are taken to validate the computational results. It is found that the flow in the aero-spike nozzle is mainly affected by the base wall pressure variation. The aerospike nozzle exhibits maximum performance in the properly expanded flow regime due to the open wake formation.
