  • This paper aims to evaluate the results of toxicity testing with Daphnia magna and Vibrio fischeri on wastewater samples which might be influenced by ion imbalance. The effluents from factories were found to be more toxic with high salinity levels than those from public wastewater treatment plant (WTP) and sewage treatment plant (SWP). Clion composition was highest in the effluent, in terms of percentage, which was followed by $Na^+$, $SO_4^{2-}$ and $Ca^{2+}$. $K^+$ and $Mg^{2+}$ ion was relatively low. The sensitivity of D. magna test results was higher than V. fischeri. Among samples which were proved by V. fischeri testing to be nontoxic, the composition ratio of each ion whether toxic samples or nontoxic samples which were decided by D. magna toxicity testing, were compared. $Na^+$, $K^+$, $Ca^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$ ion composition ratio showed high level in nontoxic samples whereas $SO_4^{2-}$ and $Cl^-$ ion composition ratio was high in toxic samples. Accordingly, $SO_4^{2-}$ and $Cl^-$ ion seemed to be considered the ions causing toxicity in effluent. Toxicity from some categories of industries (Mining of non-metallic minerals, Manufacture of basic organic petrochemicals, Manufacture of other basic organic chemicals, Manufacture of other chemical products etc.) seemed to be influenced by salinity. The Ion concentration in influent and effluent were similar. Concentration of $Na^+$, $Cl^-$, $K^+$, $Ca^{2+}$ ions were high in influent, however $Mg^{2+}$ and $SO_4^{2-}$ ions were high in effluent.

  • Recently, it is widely studied to liquid crystal (LC) alignment using ion-beam exposure. Because conventional rubbing method has some problems such as defects from dust and electrostatic charges and rubbing scratch during rubbing process. Moreover rubbing method needs cleaning process to remove these defects. Therefore rubbing-free techniques like ion-beam method are strongly required. We studied LC alignment by controlling ion-beam irradiation angles and electro-optical (EO) characteristics of twisted nematic LC on the polyimide surface. In this experiment, a good uniform alignment of the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) with the ion-beam exposure on the polyimide (PI) surface was observed. We also achieved low pretilt angle as function of ion-beam irradiation angles. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS) analysis provided chemical evidence for LC alignment by controlling ion-beam irradiation angles. In addition, it can be achieved the good EO properties of the ion-beam-aligned twisted nematic liquid crystal display (TN-LCD) on PI surface. Some other experiments results and discussion will be included in the presentation.

  • The nitrogenated diamond-like carbon (NDLC) exhibits high electrical resistivity and thermal conductivity that are similar to the properties shown by diamond-like carbon (DLC) films. These diamond-like transparent properties in NDLC come in a material consisting of $sp^2$-bonded carbon versus the $sp^3$-carbon of DLC. The diamond-like properties and nondiamond-like bonding make NDLC an attractive candidate for applications. Liquid crystal (LC) alignment capabilities with ion beam exposure on NDLC thin films and electro-optical (EO) performances of the ion-beam-aligned twisted nematic liquid crystal display (TN-LCD) with oblique ion beam exposure on the NDLC thin film surface were studied. An excellent uniform alignment of the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) alignment with the ion beam exposure on the NDLC thin films was observed. In addition, it can be achieved that the good EO properties of the ion-beam-aligned TN-LCD. Finally, we will present the residual DC property of the ion-beam-aligned TN-LCD on the NDLC thin film surface.

  • Picosecond absorption spectroscopy has been employed in the study of the solvent dynamics of 1, 2, 4, 5-tetracyanobenzene/biphenyl derivative radical ion pairs, and the resulting rates of radical ion pair separation are faster in acetonitrile than in dichloromethane. In an effort to account quantitatively for such solvent effect on the rate of radical ion pair separation, an equation for the rate of radical ion pair separation is introduced, in which the rate depends exponentially on the electrostatic interaction energy in the radical ion pair. In our analysis of the types of electrostatic interaction energy based on the conducting spheres in dielectric continuum was chosen, and the rate equation employing this electrostatic energy provided information on the distance on the distance of radical ion pair separation and solvation energy of the radical ion pair, thereby providing quantitative explanation for the observed solvent effect on the rate of radical ion pair sepaaration.

  • The ion exchange capacity of HDBPDA ion exchanger, {(4,5) : (13,14)-dibenzo-6,9,12-trioxa-3,15,21-triazabicyclo[15.3.l]heneicosa-(1,17,19)(18,20,21) triene ion exchanger: HDBPDA ion exchanger} was 3.8 meq/g. The distribution coefficients of alkali and alkaline earth metal ions in water and the various concentration of hydrochloric acid were determined. Concentration of hydrochloric acid have almost not influenced on the distribution coefficients of alkali and alkaline earth metal ions, but generally, the distribution coefficient was slightly increased with decrease of concentration of hydrochloric acid. The distribution coefficients of metal ions in water are larger than those of various hydrochloric acid concentrations. Also, alkali and alkaline earth metal ions are separated by column ion exchange chromatography using HDBPDA ion exchange with water as eluent. The distribution coefficents of alkali and alkaline earth metal ions were increased with increase of ionic radii of metal ions.

  • The effect of silver ion solution on the growth of Microcystis aeruginosa UTEX 2388 (cyanobacterium) and Chlorella sp. KCTC AG20136 (green alga) was investigated using separated and mixed culture in filtered natural water and BG11 medium. In separated culture, M. aeruginosa UTEX 2388 and Chlorella sp. KCTC AG20136 were found to be sensitive to 0.01 and 0.1 mg L$^{-1}$ of silver ion, respectively. Also, the silver ion concentrations for the growth inhibition of M. aeruginosa UTEX 2388 and Chlorella sp. KCTC AG20136 in the mixed culture were same in separated culture. Cyanobacteria were more sensitive to the silver ion solution than green algae. In bloom sample, the minimal inhibition concentration of silver ion solution for the low Chl-${\alpha}$ sample (110$\sim$190 ${\mu}g$ L$^{-1}$) and high Chl-${\alpha}$ sample (1,500$\sim$1,900 ${\mu}g$ L$^{-1}$) was about 0.1 and 3.0 mg L$^{-1}$, respectively. The silver ion concentration for the inhibition of algal bloom sample was affected by the algal biomass. In order to use silver ion solution for the control of algal bloom, the silver ion concentration must be determined in consideration of a minimal effect on the environment.

  • Fundamental investigations have been carried out to find the applicability of manganese nodule as an adsorbent of nickel ion with an intention that nickel can be secured in manganese nodule along with the treatment of wastewater. The average content of manganese in nodules which used in the experiments was about 27%. The content of nickel in manganese nodules was observed to increase up to 4 times higher with comparison to its original value after adsorption. When the initial concentration of nickel ion in artificial wastewater was lower than 500 mg/L, its adsorbed amount on manganese nodule was shown to increase continuously. However, no more than about 82 mg/L of nickel was attained at higher initial nickel ion concentration than 500 mg/L. The adsorption of nickel ion was increased with temperature under experimental conditions and as the size of manganese nodule particles became smaller more nickel ion was adsorbed on adsorbent. Regarding the effect of pH, the adsorption of nickel ion was more hindered as the solution became acidic. Adsorption behavior of nickel ion on manganese nodule was found to follow the Freundlich model well and kinetic analysis showed that the adsorption reaction of nickel ion was second order. Thermodynamic parameters for the nickel ion adsorption were estimated on the basis of thermodynamic equations and they were in good agreement with experimental results.

  • Mesophase pitch-based carbon fibers(MPCF) have been investigated as an anode active material for lithium ion secondary battery. Graphitized MPCF gives high discharge capacity and good Ah efficiency. MPCF/Li cell shows an initial discharge capacity of 300 mAh/g and Ah efficiency above $90\%$ at a current density of 25 mA/g at $0\~1$ V. Cylindrical lithium ion secondary battery was fabricated using mixed carbon anode and $LiCoO_2$, cathode. In order to improve the cyclability of lithiun ion secondary battery, other carbons were added to the MPCF up to $10wt\%$. The cycle performance of lithium ion secondary battery using mixed carbons was superior to those using graphitized MPCF.

  • We performed computer simulations to improve transmission efficiencies of a dual ion funnel system implemented on an FT-ICR MS. We found that the low m/z range from 50 to 150 could be significantly improved by operating the two ion funnels at different RF amplitudes. These new operational conditions could be applied to analyze metabolome samples, which require high sensitivity in the m/z range from 50 to 1,000.

  • Plasma Source Ion Implantation (PSII) technique was used for the hydrophilization or hydrophobization of polymer surfaces. Polymers were modified with different plasma gases such as oxygen, nitrogen, argon, and tetrafluoromethane, and for varying lengths of treatment time. Plasma ion treatment of oxygen, nitrogen, argon and their mixtures increased significantly the hydrophilic properties of polymer surfaces. More hydrophobic surfaces of polymers were formed after the treatment with tetrafluoromethane. A study of plasma source ion implanted polymers was performed using contact angle measurements and Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (TOF-SIMS). The TOF-SIMS spectra and depth profile were used to obtain the information about the treated surfaces of polymers. The permanence of this technique could be evaluated with respect to ageing time. The surfaces treated with PSII gave better stability than other surface modification methods.
