During the last decade researchers in science education and psychology have emphasized the importance of children's ideas, or "what they already know", which they bring to their related learning situations. Most research reports on the children's prior ideas reject both the traditional epistemologies and the conventional learning theories. Therefore, this study has its objective to analyze the traditional epistemologies as well as post-positivism contemporarily in vogue, to examine both the conventional learning theories and the constructivism of psychology, and then, based on the analyses, to draw the implications for the future science education. The implications are described under such headings as the nature of science, the science curricula, and the science teaching/learning. The implications are drawn in logical relation to the post-positivism and constructivism, and some of which are empirically validated by the research on the children's conceptions.

The purpose of this study is to compare and analyze secondary school chemistry education in Korea and China in order to identify implications for the improvement of Korean chemistry education. The school systems, curricula, and teacher education related to secondary chemistry education of both countries were compared and analyzed. The 6-3-3-4 school system is used in both countries, and national school curricula are formulated by the Ministries of Education in both countries. The 1996 chemistry curricular standard for advanced middle schools in China, and 1997 chemistry curriculum for Korean high schools were compared in several aspects, followed by comparisons of chemistry teacher education in both countries. Based on the comparative analysis of chemistry education, some ideas and issues which provide implications for improving Korean high school chemistry education were identified. Chemistry teaching in the junior secondary schools, tentative implementation of curricula, required course work in chemistry, structure of curricula, oral assessments, probation of teachers and other issues are identified and discussed in this study.

Quality control of science teachers seems to be one of the most important tasks to improve the quality of science education in Korea. The purposes of this study, as a survey, were to identify characteristics of good science teachers and to make an outline of preservice teacher education curriculum for cultivating the characteristics from inserivce secondary science teachers. A questionnaire was developed for this study and distributed to 176 inservice teachers. It had three parts: 1) characteristics of good science teachers, 2) weights of preservice curriclum areas, and 3) weights of college courses. The means and standard deviations of teachers' responses were calculated. To test the differences between teacher variables, t-tests were executed. The inservice teachers perceived that the junior-high school teacher's characteristics should be different from the senior-high school teacher's. Characteristics, such as enthusiasm toward teaching or students, subject knowledge, content selection and organizing skill, teaching techniques, and scientific worldview were ranked within top five of good science teacher's chracteristics. The teachers' perception about preservice curriculum were as follows: 1) present weight of liberal arts area should be reduced: 2) weight of content area for junior-high school teachers should be different from that for senior-high school teachers: 3) present weight of pedagogy area should be increased: 4) present weight of science education area should be increased: and 5) many courses in pedagogy and sciencd education areas need to be changed, Based on the data and disussion, a conceptual model for preservice teacher education curriculum was proposed.

The purpose of the present study is to show the way to develop and use the teaching materials for biology in Japan. This study was mainly carried out in documents. The following suggestions should be taken in moderate consideration: 1. Private enterprises as well as the government make heavy investments and careful considerations for the promotion of the science education including biology education. 2. Among in-service teachers one or two volunteer(s) chosen for special training course managed by the local education center are cultivated as excellent teachers on the development and using of teaching materials through an intensive study and training for six months or twelve months. 3. Most research groups consist of specialists in every field and they carry out studying the development of teaching materials in biology.

In this study, the ways to improve the processes of training, employing and retraining secondary science teachers were investigated by a survey method. Particularly, the following five aspects of the processes were questioned to three major groups of people relevant to school science. A total of 384 responses (from 156 university teachers, 168 secondary science teachers and 64 student teachers) were analyzed through the frequency-analysis and crosstab-analysis of SPSS/$PC^+$ programme. The results of this study can be summarized as follows: (1) middle-school science teachers and high-school science teachers are needed to be trained separately in different systems, (2) the proportions of the faculty members majoring science education and science studies in the departments for science education are needed to be increased, (3) the proportions of the courses related to science education and general sciences in university curriculum are need to be increased, (4) the period of teaching practice in schools during university time should be increased up to five or six weeks, (5) the proportions of science education and general sciences in the examination for science teachers' employment should be increased and the examination should have more subjective type questions, and (6) the programmes for retraining science teachers should have more contents on science education which are directly relevant to school science.

Secondary schools in Korea have been faced with several critical problems with regard to science education. Among them one of the most fundamental problems is associated with laboratory-based science education. There fore as a part of research project for the improvement of science education in secondary schools, this study had its abjectives to inquire into the following areas related to laboratory experiment. ${\circ}$Survey and analysis of theoretical backgrounds for science teaching focused on laboratory experiments. ${\circ}$Status survey of experiment-based science teaching in high schools. ${\circ}$Development of model for improving experiment-based science teaching. In order to fulfill these objectives this study used methods of eiterature review, survey, and interviews. The major finding are as follows : ${\circ}$Some topic for laboratory experiments as oppeared in the textbooks are not appropriate in the light of sience curricular operations in high schools. ${\circ}$In some schools equipments and facilities of school laboratories are for from sufficiency. ${\circ}$Laboratory experiments are not financially supportel for ideal science teach in both middle schools and high schools. The most important factor in students' growth and development is the teacher. Therefore in-service science teacher education to develop the professionality is important as well as the selection of new excellence teachers. Our research is on the development and application of new education program on science experiments where in-service teachers become the lecturers in the program and provide information that is bound to the context of real lessons. This program is consisted of following 10 steps of work, which was implemented in 5 months: sharing the philosophy of the program, selecting science experiments, first application of the experiments, discussion on the first application, learning how to edit the movie clips of the lesson, second application of the experiments, in depth discussion on the second application, developing the experiment package, giving lecture to other science teachers, and evaluating the program. We describe the process of the program developed and implemented in detail to suggest a model of science teacher education program on science experiments and discuss educational implications. This program is characterized by the emphasis of the context closely linked to the real lessons, the problem solving in a real situation, and the collaboration of teachers, professors and science education researcher in a teacher education.
