  • Purpose: This study sought to determine the possibility of developing the data-sharing infrastructure of an integrated information system to improve the quality of home and visit-based healthcare services. Methods: The articles of study here were the forms used by a visiting healthcare agency, a home healthcare system of a home healthcare agency, and those used in long-term care insurance for elderly. We visited a visit-based healthcare agency and a home healthcare agency to survey their forms and interviewed relevant practitioners, and we searched for forms associated with long-term care insurance for the elderly on the Internet. We then organized the terms in each form and mapped them among the form after analyzing the concepts as a whole to inquiry into the possibility of integration. Results: The mapping procedure divided the terms into those related to personal information, problems and interventions. Mapping between the standard system (Omaha system) and the type of form was also done. Conclusion: In this study, we found that programs were configured differently depending on the objectives of the service. It is necessary to develop the program with an integrated information system by comparing the three services in terms of their distinct advantages, after which such a service should be utilized. The results of this study can serve as a database for the creation of a new integrated system.

  • As a communication channel for individuals, social media is affecting various areas such as business, economy, politics, and society. One of the less-studied areas is the law. Therefore, this study collected various information from social media and analyzed its impacts on the legal decisions, especially the Supreme Court decisions in Korea. This study was conducted by compiling information from Internet news articles and public responses. We found that when the negative reactions from the public got higher, the trial duration until the supreme court making the final decisions became shorter. However, we were not able to find the significant relationship between social media reactions and dismissal of appeal nor annulment. Our study would contribute to the information systems and knowledge management research in a sense that the social analytics is applied to the area of legal decisions, instead of using conventional qualitative study methodology. Our study is also meaningful to the practitioners because that big data analytical business can be applied to the field of law by creating a new database for the emerging legal technology. Finally, law makers can think of a better way to standardize the legal decision process to minimize the reverse effects from social media.

  • Background: Despite the lack of official COVID-19 statistics, various workplaces and occupations have been at the center of COVID-19 outbreaks. We aimed to compare legal measures and governance established for managing COVID-19 infection risks at workplaces in nine Asia and Pacific countries and to recommend key administrative measures. Methods: We collected information on legal measures and governance from both general citizens and workers regarding infection risks such as COVID-19 from industrial hygiene professionals in nine countries (Indonesia, India, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Republic of the Philippines, Republic of Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand) using a structured questionnaire. Results: A governmental body overseeing public health and welfare was in charge of containing the spread and occurrence of infectious diseases under an infectious disease control and prevention act or another special act, although the name of the pertinent organizations and legislation vary among countries. Unlike in the case of other traditional hazards, there have been no specific articles or clauses describing the means of mitigating virus risk in the workplace that are legally required of employers, making it difficult to define the responsibilities of the employer. Each country maintains own legal systems regarding access to the duration, administration, and financing of paid sick leave. Many workers may not have access to paid sick leave even if it is legally guaranteed.

  • Telemedicine can be defined as "medical activities performed remotely by medical personnel using information and communication technology." So far, many scholars in Korea have understood that only telemedicine between medical personnel is allowed and telemedicine between medical personnel and patients is prohibited based on Article 34 of Medical Service Act. However, Article 34 is only a restriction on the performing place of medical profession, not a prohibition on telemedicine itself. And, there are no regulations prohibiting telemedicine under the korean medical law. So, it is difficult to say that telemedicine is generally prohibited under the korean medical law, apart from the health insurance medical treatment benefit standards. However, there is controversy in interpretation regarding the meaning of "direct diagnosis" in Articles 17 and 17-2 of Medical Service Act. The Constitutional Court of Korea interpreted this as "face-to-face diagnosis", while the Supreme Court of Korea interpreted it as "self diagnosis". In light of the dictionary meaning of 'direct' and the interpretation of related medical law regulations, I think the Supreme Court's interpretation is valid. Although "direct diagnosis" does not mean "face-to-face diagnosis", the concept of "diagnosis" implies "principle of face-to-face diagnosis". In addition, "non-face-to-face diagnosis" are only allowed to supplement "face-to-face diagnosis", so the problems caused by "non-face-to-face diagnosis" can be fully overcome. In the end, the limit of telemedicine is how faithful the diagnosis was.

  • The purpose of this research was to present the basic data for developing meditation programs by verifying the effect size using meta-analysis of the results from previous studies on meditation program of the elderly. In order to analyze the effect sizes of program types, group of mediating variables and activity factors of elderly meditation programs, this study reviewed 24 precedent research that have been conducted from 2003 through April 2017 in Korea using meta-analysis and summarized the effect sizes are as follows. First, the overall average effect size was .914, which was great. Among the program types, complex meditation was 1.726, which was the greatest. Among the group of mediating variables, the positive psychological variable group had the highest in 1.368 and the gender consists only of women had the highest in .921. Secondly, concerning the activity factors, when the total number of sessions was 12~20 times(1.193), sessions per week was twice(1.254), time went for 110~120 minutes per session(1.581) and the group size was 71~100 persons(1.535) that were shown as higher effect size. Among the types of publications, articles in journals(1.062) had a higher effect size than dissertations(.817). For the organizing elderly meditation program in the future, I suggest that the program type of complex meditation, 12~20 time of total sessions, twice a week, 110~120 minutes of activity hours. At the time we entered the aged society, this study is meaningful in that it provides the basic data for future program development by confirming the effect size according to program types, mediation variables and activity factors for the meditation program performed for the elderly.

  • This paper studies the influence of multinational R&D Labs' expansion motives on their business performance and the mediating effect of the level of control on this motive-performance relationship. Through an in-depth study of the relevant literature, the expansion motives can be divided into four general types. The first is called a market factor in the sense that the purpose of their expansion is to secure potential markets and customers in China. The second is called a resource factor; their purpose is to obtain excellent technology and a workforce from the country. The third is called an institution factor. An example is the case of R&D Labs advancing into China to make the best of its institutional advantages such as the government's benefits, related policies, and incentive articles. The last is called a strategic factor and indicates the case where they go into China for the purpose of competing in the market, considering it as a major strategic place. The companies' control level on their R&D Labs was measured for each item. According to the empirical analysis on the relevance of their control level and expansion motives, it turns out that giving a free hand to the Labs which pursue market, institutional, and strategic factors is more desirable than highly controlling them. This is because they should be familiar with the local business environment in consideration of those companies' objectives. In light of the mediating effects of the control level on expansion motives and business performance, the R&D Labs pursuing resource factors seem to need their headquarters' control to make the best use of the high-end technology obtained in the country. The companies pursuing strategic factors seem to hold a dominant position and perform more competitively when their headquarters control the Labs more tightly.

  • Since being designated as an important Intangible Cultural Property, Yeongsanjae has become recognized as a unique representation of Buddhist rituals in Korea. Following vigorous research in recent years, however, Suryukjae(水陸齋) was found to have been performed for a longer period and on a larger scale than Yeongsanjae, and under state leadership. This allowed researchers to move beyond the previous perspective that Yeongsanjae(靈山齋) lay at the center of many rituals. This study aims first to examine the origin and development of Yeongsanjae in Korea based on the literature, and then to discuss the meaning it holds today. Yeongsanjae was recorded as a ritual in Jineongwongong -published in 1496 during the early Joseon Dynasty- and also appeared in Yeongsandaehoejakbeopjeolcha -published in 1634(the 12th year of Injo's reign) in the mid-Joseon Dynasty and it was called Yeongsandaehoejakbeopjeolcha. It continued into the late Joseon Dynasty and it was called Yeongsanjakbeop or Yeongsandaehoejakbeop in the Ojongbeomeum collections(1661), CheonjimyeongyangSuryukjaeuiBeomeumsanbo collections(1721), and Jakbeobguigam(1826). In modern times, it has been called Yeongsanje in newspaper articles of TongnipSinmun (The Independent) and Yeongsanjae in Seokmunuibeom(1935). Nevertheless, the difference between the early Joseon Dynasty and subsequent periods is whether mourning of the spirit(唱魂) is added. In this regard, Yeongsanhoe in the early Joseon Dynasty mainly concerned Buddhist teachings realized through rituals such as sermon scenes of the Buddha. On the other hand, it was combined with Buddhist masses for the dead(追薦) from the mid-Joseon Dynasty and performed alongside with Buddhist teachings and prayers for the dead. Taking into account the seven-day Suryukjae, however, Yeongsanjae was performed daily during the day and mainly dealt with Buddhist teachings, while Buddhist masses for the dead were included when Yeongsanjae was performed independently.

  • Idiopathic Parkinson disease(IPD) is an neurodegenerative disease caused by the loss of dopamine cells in the substantia nigra, a region of midbrain. Its major symptoms are muscular rigidity, bradykinesia, resting tremor, and postural instability. An estimated 70~90% of patients with IPD also have hypokinetic dysarthria. Subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS) has been reported to be successful in relieving the core motor symptoms of IPD in the advanced stages of the disease. However, data on the effects of STN-DBS on speech performance are inconsistent. A medline literature search was done to retrieve articles published from 1987 to 2012. The results were narrowed down to focus on speech performance under STN-DBS based perceptual, acoustic, and/or aerodynamic analyses. Among the 32 publications which dealt with speech performance after STN-DBS indicated improvement(42%), deterioration(29%), mixed results(26%), or no change(3%). The most favorite method was found to be based upon acoustic analysis by using a vowel prolongation and Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale(UPDRS). For the purpose of verifying the effect of the STN-DBS, speech evaluation should be undertaken on all speech components such as articulation, resonance, phonation, respiration, and prosody by using a contextual speech task.
