  • Line type rigid bearings for Open-Steel-Plate-Girder railway bridges have several problems in service, and they are unstable structurally. A series of lateral resistance tests were performed for a retrieved line type bearing. A spherical bearing with advanced maintenance-capability and a device to resist the up-lift was developed and replaced the existing ones. An experiment of maintenance for a new spherical bearing under real Open-Steel-Plate-Girder bridge was conducted and their good maintenance performance was proved. Also, a test against up-lift was performed for the bearing. The dynamic behavior of the bridge was measured and analyzed for the two cases of the existing and replaced bearings. Therefore, the suitability of the new spherical bearings on the railway bridge was improved.

  • KTX wheelset bearings have thus far been maintained in accordance with the maintenance system of French national railway company, SNCF. The overhaul cycle time (OCT) of KTX wheelset bearings is now 1.4 million km in mileage. This value, however, has not been validated in Korea that has much different railway environments with France. In fact, it is impossible to validate OCT of wheelset bearings directly because they are disassembled and cleaned only when some faults are detected. In this paper, the accuracy of the current OCT value was evaluated indirectly by investigating the effect of grease lubricants on the bearing life. Five grease samples (one new and four aged greases) were used in this study. Four aged greases of different conditions were obtained from four wheelset bearings whose mileages were about 0.3, 1.2, 1.3, and 1.8 million km, respectively. Each grease sample was then injected into the RCF (Rolling Contact Fatigue) tester and fatigue lifetime was experimentally estimated. In addition, the wt% of Fe in each grease sample was analysed. The experiment results reveal that the bearing lifetime is inversely proportional to the mileage of grease sample while the wt% of Fe increases with the mileage of grease sample. Based on the experimental results, it can be concluded that the current OCT value is appropriate for the first overhaul of wheelset bearings. However, further validation is required to determine the second and third OCT values.

  • The dynamic characteristics of natural rubber bearings, which are used as isolator, are dependent on the main rubber's dynamic behaviors and nonlinear properties. Rubber materials tend to undergo an aging process under the influence of mechanical or environmental factors, so they inevitably end up facing damage. A main cause of aging like this is known to be oxidization, which occurs through the heat of reaction at high temperatures. Accordingly, in this study an accelerated thermal aging test was carried out in order to compare the characteristic values of the bearings before and after thermal aging occurs. As a result of this experiment, it was found that a thermal aging phenomenon could have some effects on shear stiffness, energy absorption, and equivalent damping coefficients of the bearings. Furthermore, a deterioration in the dynamic properties of the natural rubber bearings caused by the thermal aging was applied to an actual bridge and then the effects of such thermal aging on the seismic performance of the bridge were also compared and analyzed based on numerical analysis. As a result of this analysis, it was found that the changes in the basic properties of the natural rubber bearings caused by the thermal aging bring only a minor effect on the seismic performance of bridges.

  • Isolated structures use devices such as high damping rubber bearings (HDRB) in order to dramatically reduce the seismic forces transmitted from the substructure to the superstructure. The laminated rubber bearing is the most important structural member of a seismic isolation system. The basic characteristics of rubber bearings have been confirmed through compression tests, compressive shearing tests and creep tests. This paper presents the results and analysis of a 1000hr, ongoing creep test conducted at 7.5MPa, 8.37MPa in our laboratory. The long-term behavior of bridge bearings, such as high-damping rubber bearings, will be discovered through a compression creep test subjected to actual environmental conditions. These tests indicated that the maximum creep deformation is about $0.3{\sim}1.92%$ of total rubber thickness.

  • A previous study evaluated the seismic response of typical multi-span simply supported (MSSS) and multi-span continuous (MSC) steel-girder bridges in the central and southeastern United States. The results showed that the bridges were vulnerable to damage resulting from impact between decks, and large ductility demands on nonductile columns. Furthermore, fixed and expansion bearings were likely to fail during strong ground motion. In this paper, several retrofit measures to improve the seismic performance of typical multi-span simply supported and multi-span continuous steel girder bridges are evaluated, including the use of elastomeric bearings, lead-rubber bearings, and restrainer cables. It is determined that iead-rubber bearings are the most effective retrofit measure for reducing the seismic vulnerability of typical bridges. While isolation provided by elastomeric bearings limits the forces into the columns, the added flexibility results in pounding between decks in the MSSS steel-girder bridge. Restrainer cables, which are becoming a common retrofit measure, are only moderately effective in reducing the seismic vulnerability of MSSS and MSC steel girder bridges.

  • An automatic transmission, which consists of several decks of planetary gear sets, provides multiple speed and torque ratios by actuating brakes and clutches (mechanical friction components) for connecting central members of the planetary gear sets. The gear set consists of the sun gear, the ring gear, and the carrier supporting multiple planet gears with pin shafts. In designing a new automatic transmission, there are many steps to design and analyze: gears, brakes and clutches, shafts, and other mechanical components. Among them, selecting thrust bearings that not only allow the relative rotation of the central members and other mechanical components but also support axial forces coming from them is important; doing so yields superior driving performance and better fuel efficiency. In selecting thrust bearings, the magnitude of axial forces on them is a critical factor that affects their bearing size and performance; its results are systematically related to the direction of the helical angle of each planetary gear set (a geometric design profile). This research presents the effects of the helical angle direction on the axial forces acting on thrust bearings in an automatic transmission consisting of planetary gear sets. A model transmission was built by analyzing kinematics and power flows and by designing planetary gear sets. The results of the axial forces on thrust bearings were analyzed for all combinations of helix angle directions of the planetary gear sets.

  • This paper introduces the effect of grease on the degradation characteristics of bearings used as key components of packaging equipment and automation systems. Bearings parts are installed to fix and support the rotating body of the system, and performance degradation of the bearings has a great effect on the life of the system too. When bearings are used in various devices and systems, the grease is applied to reduce friction and improve fatigue life. Determining the type of lubricant (grease) is important because it has a great influence on the operating environment and lifespan and ensures long lifespan of systems and facilities. However, studies that simultaneously compared and analyzed the change in mechanical degradation characteristics and the comparison of chemical degradation characteristics according to grease types under actual operating conditions are insufficient. In this paper, three types of small harmonic drive, high-load reducer, and low-load reducer grease used in power transmission joint modules are experimentally selected and finally injected into ball bearings with a load (19,500N) to improve bearing durability. Degradation characteristics were tested by attaching to test equipment. At this time, after the durability test under the same load conditions, the mechanical degradation characteristics, that is temperature, vibration according to the three greases types. In addition, the chemical degradation characteristics of the corresponding grease was compared to present the results of mutual correlation analysis.

  • Operational reliability of the single-use turbo engine for guided weapons must be guaranteed even after long-term storage. Rolling element bearings have a great influence on the operational reliability of the turbo engine, however changes in micro dimensions of bearings by an oxide layers on rolling elements and raceways may cause failures after long-term storage. In this study, changes in dimensions of bearings were measured and roughness of rolling elements was used for estimating the storage life. Storage life estimation was performed via two kinds of methods, Weibayes method and random sample generation method. The results of two methods were compared and their characteristics were analyzed. This study will contribute to establish an efficient maintenance schedule for the single-use turbo engine.

  • Many isolated bridges are designed and constructed after the introduction of the seismic design. However those bridges designed in engineering fields have unnecessarily high serviceability limit and brittle failure mechanism, which do not satisfy the seismic design concept. Such design results are due to the excessive substructure stiffness of the conventional design method as well as the misunderstanding of the seismic design method. In this study an isolated bridge designed with the conventional design method is selected and the same bridge with steel bearings is modelled for the comparative seismic design. From the comparison, the seismic design procedures satisfying the required performance levels are provided for the two bridges. It is confirmed that the isolated bridge requires more complicated design procedure with trial and error methods and reanalyses but provides higher serviceability limit compared to the bridge with steel bearings. However, because the required serviceability limit can also be obtained by adjusting substructure stiffness, it is a resonable seismic design process that an isolated bridge is to be considered as an alternative design when the ductile failure mechanism is not obtained with a bridge with steel bearings.

  • For the application into a 1 kWh flywheel energy storage system(FESS), this paper presents the design scheme of radial and axial hybrid magnetic bearings which use bias fluxes generated by permanent magnets. In particular, the axial hybrid magnetic bearing is newly proposed in this paper, in which a permanent magnet is arranged in axial direction so that it can support the rotor weight as well as provide a bias flux for axial magnetic bearing. Such hybrid magnetic bearings consume very low power, compared with conventional electromagnetic bearings. In this paper, to stably support a 140 kg flywheel rotor without contact, design process is explained in detail, and magnetic circuit analysis and three-dimensional finite element analysis are carried out to determine the design parameters and predict the performance of the magnetic bearings.
