This study has done for the purpose of investigation among the degrees of pain coping strategies, pain, and depression of patients with rheumatoid arthritis. The subjects of this study were 214 patients diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. The data were collected from september 4 to 16, 1995 by questionnaires. The data were analysed by the use of frequency, t-test, Pearson Correlation Coefficients, ANOVA, and Duncan test. The results Were as follows ; 1. The mean score of pain was 213.5(range : 4-390) and that of depression was 21.4 (range : 1-50). The mean score of passive pain coping strategies was 30.2(range : 11-48) and that of active pain coping strategies was 18.6(range : 7-33) 2. The passive pain coping degree showed a positive correlation with the pain degree (r=.475, p=.0001) and the active pain coping degree showed a inversive correlation with that(r= -.296, p=.0001). The passive pain coping degree showed a positive correlation with the depression degree (r=.425, p=.0001) and the active pain coping degree showed a inversive correlation with that(r=-.299, p=.0001). The pain degree showed a positive correlation with the depression degree(r=.374, p=.0001).
Background: Bertolotti's syndrome (BS), a form of lumbago in lumbosacral transitional vertebrae, is an important cause of low back pain in young patients. The purpose of this study was to assess the etiology of low back pain and the efficacy of treatment offered to patients with BS. Methods: All patients of BS Castellvi type1a during a period of 6 months were enrolled in the study. The patients underwent interventional pain procedures for diagnosis and pain relief. Response to the therapy was assessed based on VAS and ODI scores. A 50% decrease in VAS score or a VAS score less than 3 would be considered adequate pain relief. Results: All 20 patients diagnosed with BS during the 6-month observation period had scoliosis. Common causes of back pain were the ipsilateral L5-S1 facet joint, neoarticulation, the SI joint, and disc degeneration. Responses to various interventions for pain relief were different and inconsistent from patient to patient. In particular, responses to interventions for neoarticular pain were generally poor. Conclusions: Pain in patients with BS does not usually respond to interventional pain treatment. A very dynamic treatment approach must be pursued while managing BS patients, and the treatment plan must be individualized at various stages in order to obtain satisfactory pain relief.
Purpose: The purpose of the study was to identify the pain patterns and factors affecting low back pain in middle-aged women with backache. Method: A descriptive research design was utilized. The participants were middle-aged women who visited to two back pain clinics in Wonju from October, 2006 through February, 2007. A total of 195 low back pain patients agreed to participate in this study, and data from 177 were analyzed. Data were collected using a questionnaire which included a modified short-form Korean pain rating scale, demographic factors, factors related to low back pain and health behavior. Descriptive statistics and multiple regression analysis was utilized in the analysis. Results: The mean score for low back pain was relatively low(M=21.57, SD=11.44). Among pain patterns, scores for dull pain were the highest of all the dimensions. In the regression analysis, significant factors affecting low back pain were found to be age, level of education, religion, BMI, experience of pregnancy, delivery type and exercise. These variables explained 24.8% of variance in low back pain(F=3.79, p<.001). Conclusion: These results suggest that nurses need for assessment and intervention to take into consideration pain patterns as well as factors affecting middle-age women with backache.
Purpose: This study attempted to classify the potential layer for pain in the middle-aged and elderly based on the seventh Aging Research Panel Survey (2018) data and to identify the degree of depression by potential layer. Methods: This study used data from the 2018 Aging Research Panel Survey, whose participants included 6,890 middle-aged and elderly people. The data were analyzed using SPSS/WIN 22.0 and M-plus 8.0 for latent profile analysis. Results: In the study, Type 1 was a "general pain group", Type 2 was the "high back pain group", Type 3 was the "lower body pain group", Type 4 was the "shoulder pain group", and Type 5 was the "pain-free group", which included those who answered that there was no pain. Second, it was found that the variables such as gender, age, education, or not alone were statistically significant (p<.001). Third, the difference in income, subjective health conditions, depression according to the pain site type group were confirmed. Depression was significantly higher in the back pain group, lower body pain group, and shoulder pain group compared to the pain-free group. Conclusion: Developing integrative interventions is necessary to reduce depression using the pain coping skills in middle-aged and Elderly.
This case study was performed to assess the effectiveness of taping therapy for the patient who have patellofemoral joint pain during knee extension exercise. The results were as follows: 1. Pain degree of VAS was decreased at every taping therapy. 2. A number of knee extension was increased at every taping therapy. 3. Diameter of quadriceps was increased at every taping therapy. 4. Pattern of gait was normalized at every taping therapy. We found improve of pain degree, a number of knee extension, diameter of quadriceps, and pattern of gait. These results are imply that taping therapy may have effectiveness to those who have patellofemoral joint pain during knee extension exercise.
Purpose : To determine the clinical correlation of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of temporomandibular joint internal derangements. Materials and Methods : The MR images of 150 TMJs in 75 patients were analyzed. The clinical symptoms were pain in the preauricular area and masticatory muscles and TMJ sounds. Results : There was a statistically significant relationship between the MRI diagnoses of different types of disc displacements and clinical findings of pain, clicking, and crepitus. The risk of TMJ pain was increased when the disc displacement without reduction occurred at the same time in combination with the osteoarthrosis and effusion. Conclusion : Regardless of the results, the data indicate that each of these MR imaging variables may not be regarded as the unique and dominant factor in defining TMJ pain occurrence.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the correlation between the clinical symptoms of temporomandibular disorder and findings in the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Materials and Methods: Clinical data and MRI images were collected from a total of 240 German patients. Clinical symptoms were briefed as joint clicking, crepitus and pain. MRI findings were further defined according to the condyle position, condyle degeneration, disc positon, disc degeneration and the presence of osteophyte/sclerosis/synovitis. Hypermobility was separately recorded. Correlation analysis between parameters was performed. Result: Joint clicking had a positive correlation with unilateral disc degeneration, osteophyte, sclerosis and synovitis. Crepitus had a significant correlation with bilateral osteophyte. Pain was not correlated with any MRI findings except hypermobility. Conclusion: Selective correlations between the MRI findings and clinical symptoms were elucidated. The results of this study imply that condyle-disc deformities could be advanced without pain, and that joint clicking and crepitus could be clinical symptoms of condyle-disc degeneration.
Temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJ OA) causes destruction of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and can lead to occlusal changes such as anterior open bite in some patients. Consequently, these patients may experience difficulty in chewing food items and exhibit abnormal functional habits such as bruxism, preventing healing of the TMJ condyles. Treatment protocols include the use of traction appliances to reduce stress on the condyles. Unstable occlusions can lead to weakness of the masticatory muscles which, in turn, worsen the occlusal changes and complicate pain management. Therefore, the current study evaluated the condition of the masseter muscle using ultrasonography and educated patients on the execution of gum-chewing exercises for muscle strengthening. It also aimed to assess the effects of traction appliances and strengthening exercises on the masticatory muscles of patients with occlusal changes caused by TMJ OA.
