Experimental and numerical studies on seismic behaviour of exterior beam-column joints

  • A nonlinear finite element analysis using ANSYS is used to evaluate the seismic behavior of reinforced concrete exterior beam-column joints. The behavior of the finite element models under cyclic loading is compared with the experimental results. Two beam-column joint specimens (SH and SHD) with square hoop confinement in joint and throughout the column with detailing as per IS 13920 are studied. The specimen SHD was provided with additional diagonal bars from column to beam to relocate the plastic hinge formation from beam-column interface. The load-displacement relationship, joint shear stress and strain in beam obtained from numerical study showed good agreement with the experimental results. This investigation proves that seismic behaviour of reinforced concrete beam-column joints under reversed cyclic loading can be evaluated successfully using finite element modeling and analysis.

  • 저자는 최근 산업체 생산 현장에서 Z-피닝 복합재 구조물을 간편하게 제작할 수 있는 Z-피닝 패치 개념을 제안하였고, 이를 적용하여 복합재 단일-겹침 전단 접합시편을 제작하였으며, 정적시험을 통하여 54~68%의 접합강도의 향상을 발표하였다. 본 연구는 상기 연구의 후속으로서, 반복하중에 대한 접합강도의 향상을 측정하기 위하여 피로시험을 수행하였다. 사용된 Z-핀은 스테인레스강 핀이며, 복합재료와의 결합력을 증가시키기 위하여 표면을 요철 형상으로 가공하였으며, 화학적으로 부식시켰다. 반복하중 조건에서 접합강도는 약 98~125% 향상되었다.

Numerical Simulation of Welding Residual Stress Distribution on T-joint Fillet Structure

  • Fillet welding is widely used in the assembly of ships and offshore structures. The T-joint configuration is frequently reported to experience fatigue damage when a marine structure meets extreme loads such as storm loads. Fatigue damage is affected by the magnitude of residual stresses on the weld. Recently, many shipping registers and design guides have required that the fatigue strength assessment procedure of seagoing structures under wave-induced random loading and storm loading be compensated based on the effect of residual stresses. We propose a computational procedure to analyze the residual stresses in a T-joint. Residual stresses are measured by the X-ray diffraction (XRD) method, and a 3-D finite element analysis (FEA) is performed to obtain the residual stress profile in the T-joint. The proposed finite element model is validated by comparing experiments with computational results, and the characteristics of the residual stresses in the T-joint are discussed.

Seismic behavior and strength of L-shaped steel reinforced concrete column-concrete beam planar and spatial joints

  • The study presented experimental and numerical investigation on the seismic performance of steel reinforced concrete (SRC) L-shaped column- reinforced concrete (RC) beam joints. Various parameters described as steel configuration form, axial compressive ratio, loading angle, and the existence of slab were examined through 4 planar joints and 7 spatial joints. The characteristics of the load-displacement response included the bearing capacity, ductility, story drift ratio, energy-dissipating capacity, and stiffness degradation were analyzed. The results showed that shear failure and flexural failure in the beam tip were observed for planar joints and spatial joint, respectively. And RC joint with slab failed with the plastic hinge in the slab and bottom of the beam. The results indicated that hysteretic curves of spatial joints with solid-web steel were plumper than those with hollow-web specimens. The capacity of planar joints was higher than that of space joints, while the opposite was true for energy-dissipation capacity and ductility. The high compression ratio contributed to the increase in capacity and initial stiffness of the joint. The elastic and elastic-plastic story deformation capacity of L-shaped column frame joints satisfied the code requirement. A design formula of joint shear resistance based on the superposition theory and equilibrium plasticity truss model was proposed for engineering application.

Strengthening of deficient RC joints with diagonally placed external C-FRP ropes

  • Deficient beam-column joints of reinforced concrete (RC) structures designed to older practices and codes often lead to destructive local or global failures. A strengthening technique for these joints based on the use of the new and innovative Carbon-FRP (C-FRP) ropes is presented and investigated. The C-FRP ropes are diagonally placed in superficial notches on the two sides of the joint. Two full scale external substandard joint subassemblages with the same characteristics, one unstrengthened and one strengthened with diagonally applied C-FRP ropes, are constructed and tested in cyclic loading. Special attention has been given to the elaboration of the acquired test measurements. The extracted conclusions are based on the comparative study of the hysteretic responses of the specimens, the observed maximum load envelopes, the comparisons of the joint body shear deformations as measured using diagonally mounted LVTDs, the calculated nominal principal stresses developed in the joint regions, the assessed joint damage as expressed by the damage index by Park and Ang and finally the calculated values of the equivalent damping ratio. From these comparisons it is concluded that application of diagonally mounted C-FRP ropes on the two sides of the joint body of exterior connections is an efficient easy-to-apply technique for the strengthening of substandard RC joints.

Studies on seismic performance of the new section steel beam-wall connection joint

  • This paper introduces a new hybrid structural connection joint that combines shear walls with section steel beams, fundamentally resolving the construction complexity issue of requiring pre-embedded connectors in the connection between shear walls and steel beams. Initially, a quasi-static loading scheme with load-deformation dual control was employed to conduct low-cycle repeated loading experiments on five new connection joints. Data was acquired using displacement and strain gauges to compare the energy dissipation coefficients of each specimen. The destruction process of the new connection joints was meticulously observed and recorded, delineating it into three stages. Hysteresis curves and skeleton curves of the joint specimens were plotted based on experimental results, summarizing the energy dissipation performance of the joints. It's noteworthy that the addition of shear walls led to an approximate 17% increase in the energy dissipation coefficient. The energy dissipation coefficients of dog-bone-shaped connection joints with shear walls and cover plates reached 2.043 and 2.059, respectively, exhibiting the most comprehensive hysteresis curves. Additionally, the impact of laminated steel plates covering composite concrete floors on the stiffness of semi-rigid joint ends under excessive stretching should not be disregarded. A comparison with finite element analysis results yielded an error of merely 2.2%, offering substantial evidence for the wide-ranging application prospects of this innovative joint in seismic performance.

고장력볼트 T-인장이음의 피로거동에 관한 실험적 연구 (An Experimental Study on the Fatigue Behavior of T-Type Tension Joints with High Tension Bolt)

  • 본 연구에서는 인장이음에 대한 반복하중의 영향을 파악하기 위하여 단순 인장이음을 대상으로 피로시험을 수행하였다. 인장이음의 볼트체결에 따른 축력과 작용하중에 의한 축력의 변화를 측정하였고 반복하중에 의한 볼트의 축력과 파괴양상, 이음의 피로강도를 조사하였다. 인장이음의 구조 상세 변수는 플랜지 두께와 고장력 볼트의 직경으로서 이들의 조합에 따라 볼트와 연결부의 강성이 달라지도록 하였다. 피로시험결과, 반복하중을 받는 인장이음의 파괴모드는 EC3에서 제시하고 있는 정적 파괴모드별 극한하중을 이용하여 평가될 수 있었다. 인장이음의 피로강도는 지레작용을 고려하지 않은 EC3(36)의 피로강도보다 상당히 안전측의 결과로 나타났다. 그러나, 지레작용에 의한 부가축력은 볼트 축력의 증가를 일으키기 때문에 피로강도에 대한 신중한 평가가 필요하다.

Performance of hybrid beam-column joint cast with high strength concrete

  • This paper presents investigation into the behavior of beam-column joints, with the joint region concrete being replaced by steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) and by ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC). A total of ten beam-column joint specimens (BCJ) were tested experimentally to failure under monotonic and cyclic loading, with the beam section being subjected to flexural loading and the column to combined flexural and axial loading. The joint region essentially transferred shear and axial stresses as received from the column. Steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) and ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) were used as an innovative construction and/or strengthening scheme for some of the BCJ specimens. The reinforced concrete specimens were reinforced with longitudinal steel rebar, 18 mm, and some specimens were reinforced with an additional two ties in the joint region. The results showed that using SFRC and UHPC as a replacement concrete for the BCJ improved the joint shear strength and the load carrying capacity of the hybrid specimens. The mode of failure was also converted from a non-desirable joint shear failure to a preferred beam flexural failure. The effect of the ties in the SFRC and UHPC joint regions could not be observed due to the beam flexural failure. Several models were used in estimating the joint shear strength for different BCJ specimens. The results showed that the existing models yielded wide-ranging values. A new concept to take into account the influence of column axial load on the shear strength of beam-column joints is also presented, which demonstrates that the recommended values for concrete tensile strength for determination of joint shear strength need to be amended for joints subject to moderate to high axial loads. Furthermore, finite element model (FEM) simulation to predict the behaviour of the hybrid BCJ specimens was also carried out in an ABAQUS environment. The result of the FEM modelling showed good agreement with experimental results.

하중조건과 콜드조인트를 고려한 1년 양생된 OPC 콘크리트의 염화물 확산계수 평가 (Chloride Diffusion Coefficient Evaluation in 1 Year-Cured OPC Concrete under Loading Conditions and Cold Joint)

  • 시공지연 등으로 발생한 콜드조인트는 전단력에 취약하며 염화물 침투 및 확산을 촉진시킨다. 본 연구는 압축 및 인장하중과 콜드조인트 조건을 고려한 1년 양생된 콘크리트의 염화물 확산계수를 분석하였으며 선행연구인 91일 재령의 결과와 비교하였다. 91일 재령결과와 비교할 때, 하중을 재하하지 않은 일반적인 경우에는 건전부에서는 10.7%, 콜드조인트에서는 10.5%로 낮게 평가 되었다. 건전부와 콜드조인트의 감소율의 차이는 비슷하지만 염화물 확산계수는 콜드조인트에서 크게 발생하였다. 압축력 30%의 경우 건전부는 하중재하시 발생된 공극압밀로 인하여 확산계수가 감소하였다. 콜드조인트 콘크리트의 경우 365일 재령은 91일 재령보다 압축력 30%일 경우 10.9%, 압축력 60%일 경우 5.8% 확산계수가 낮게 평가되었는데, 이는 장기간 수중양생에 따른 지속적인 수화반응에 의해 확산계수가 낮게 평가되었기 때문이다. 인장력의 경우 압축부와는 다르게 동일 수준의 인장하중과 재령, 콜드조인트 유 무에 따른 확산계수의 차이가 비교적 크지 않았다. 이는 콘크리트가 1년 재령임에도 불구하고 인장력에 취약한 재료적 특성인 미세균열이 지배적인 영향으로 작용하였기 때문이다.

일체식교대 강교량의 거더-교대 연결부 상세의 거동평가를 위한 실험적 연구 (Experimental Study for Performance Evaluation of Structural Details of Girder-Abutment Joint in Integral Abutment Steel Bridge)

  • 본 연구에서는 일체식교대 강교량 거더-교대 연결부의 강체거동 및 균열저항성능의 향상을 위한 구조상세를 제시하고 그에 따른 연결부의 거동을 실험적으로 평가하였다. 거더-교대 연결부의 강체거동 및 균열저항성능을 향상시키기 위하여 전단연결재 및 tie bar를 적용한 연결부를 제시하였으며, 제시된 연결부 실험체와 기존 시공경험에 의해 설계된 연결부 실험체의 하중재하실험을 통하여 연결부의 성능 및 거동 특성을 검토하였다. 하중재하실험 결과, 모든 강 거더-교대 연결부 실험체들은 목표 설계하중 및 항복하중 이하에서 충분한 강성 및 균열저항 성능을 보여 강 거더-교대 연결부로 적용 가능하다. 하지만 실험체의 초기 강성, 균열의 진전형상 측면, 하중-변형률 측면에서 전단연결재와 tie bar가 적용된 강 거더-교대 연결부가 기존에 적용되어 왔던 강 거더-교대 연결부에 비하여 구조적으로 우수한 것으로 판단된다.
