In twentieth century, a rigid pavement composed of a series of thin Portland Cement Concrete has been accepted due to the desirable structural strength of concrete, durability and economy. However, despite of precise design and construction of concrete highway pavements, some of concrete pavements (example : Interstate-l0 and 75 in U.S.A, 88 Olympic express highway and Jung-bu express highway in Korea) has already shown severe signs of longitudinal and transverse cracking, faulting, and pumping before the end of their intended service life. This highlights the need for better understanding of concrete pavement behavior using structural analysis program. For these reasons, this research was performed to study an analytical behavior of concrete pavements, especially for the effects of skewed joints on concrete pavements. Subsequently, this research should give better understanding of concrete pavement behavior to the highway engineers and provide effective remedies to the concrete highway pavements.

BSR noise emerges in a vehicle as a result of road vibrations, engine vibrations, and speaker vibrations. BSR noise occurs with an irregular impact or stick slip friction phenomenon as the influence of the resonance mode when the vibration input load is transferred along poor joint and contacting pairs of the system. A sub-structure method of finite element analysis is required to detect impacts and slip in the full vehicle model. This study presents a method for sub-structure modeling and a rattle and squeak detection methodology that considers the characteristics of road vibration inputs.
Many researcher's efforts have made a significant advancement of space frame structure with various portion, and it becomes the most outsanding one of space structures. However, with the characteristics of thin and long term of spacing, the unstable behavior of space structure is shown by initial imperfection, erection procedure or joint, especially space frame structure represents more. This kind of unstable problem could not be set up clearly and there is a huge difference between theory and experiment. Moreover, the discrete structure such as space frame has more complex solution, this it is not easy to derive the formulation of design about space structure. In this space frame structure, the character of rise-span ratio or load mode is represented by the instability of space frame structure with initial imperfection, and snap-through or bifurcation might be the main phenomenon. Therefore, in this study, space frame structure which has a lot of aesthetic effect and profitable for large space covering single layer is dealt. And because that the unstable behavior due to variation of inner force resistance in the elastic range is very important collapse mechanism, I would like to investigate unstable character as a nonlinear behavior with a geometric nonlinear. In order to study the instability. I derive tangent stiffness matrix using finite element method and with displacement incremental method perform nonlinear analysis of unit space structure, star dome and 3-ring star dome considering rise-span $ratio(\mu}$ and load $ratio(R_L)$ for analyzing unstable phenomenon.

Nowadays, non-pollution energy sources have been strongly needed because of the exhaustion of fossil fuels and serious environmental problems. Because wind energy can be enormously obtained from natural atmosphere, this type of energy has lots of advantages in a economic and pollution point of view. This study has established the aerodynamic and structural design procedure of the rotor blade with an appropriate aerodynamic performance and structural strength for the 500㎾ medium class wind turbine system. The aerodynamic configuration of the rotor blade was determined by considering the wind condition in the typical local operation region, and based on this configuration aerodynamic performance analysis was performed. The rotor blade has the shell-spar structure based on glass/epoxy composite material and is composed of shank including metal joint parts and blade. Structural design was done by the developed design program in this study and structural analysis, for instance stress analysis, mode analysis and fatigue life estimation, was performed by the finite element method. As a result, a medium scale wind turbine rotor blade with starting characteristics of 4m/s wind speed, rated power of 500㎾ at 12m/s wind speed and over 20 years fatigue life has been designed.
In previous weak-axis moment connection tests, brittle fracture always initiated near the edge of the beam flange groove weld due to force flow towards the stiffer column flanges, which is the opposite pattern as strong-axis moment connections. As part of the China NSFC (51278061) study, this paper tested two full-scale novel weak-axis reduced beam section moment connections, including one exterior frame connection specimen SJ-1 under beam end monotonic loading and one interior frame joint specimen SJ-2 under column top cyclic loading. Test results showed that these two specimens were able to satisfy the demands of FEMA-267 (1995) or ANSI/AISC 341-10 (2010) without experiencing brittle fracture. A parametric analysis using the finite element software ABAQUS was carried out to better understand the cyclic performance of the novel weak-axis reduced beam section moment connections, and the influence of the distance between skin plate and reduced beam section, a, the length of the reduced beam section, b, and the cutting depth of the reduced beam section, c, on the cyclic performance was analyzed. It was found that increasing three parametric values reasonably is beneficial to forming beam plastic hinges, and increasing the parameter a is conducive to reducing stress concentration of beam flange groove welds while increasing the parameters b and c can only reduce the peak stress of beam flange groove welds. The rules recommended by FEMA350 (2000) are suitable for designing the proposed weak-axis RBS moment connection, and a proven calculation formulation is given to determine the thickness of skin plate, the key components in the proposed weak-axis connections. Based on the experimental and numerical results, a design procedure for the proposed weak-axis RBS moment connections was developed.
Although the evaluation of the mechanical properties and behavior of discontinuous rock masses is very important for the design of underground openings, it has always been considered the most difficult problem. One of the difficulties in describing the rock mass behavior is assigning the appropriate constitutive model. This limitation may be overcome with the progress in discrete element software such as PFC, which does not need the user to prescribe a constitutive model for rock mass. Instead, the micro-scale properties of the intact rock and joints are defined and the macro-scale response results from those properties and the geometry of the problem. In this paper, a $30m{\times}30m{\times}30m$ jointed rock mass of road tunnel site was analyzed. A discrete fracture network was developed from the joint geometry obtained from core logging and surface survey. Using the discontinuities geometry from the DFN model, PFC simulations were carried out, starting with the intact rock and systematically adding the joints and the stress-strain response was recorded for each case. With the stress-strain response curves, the mechanical properties of discontinuous rock masses were determined and compared to the results of empirical methods such as RMR, Q and GSI. The values of Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio and peak strength are almost similar from PFC model and Empirical methods. As expected, the presence of joints had a pronounced effect on mechanical properties of the rock mass. More importantly, the mechanical response of the PFC model was not determined by a user specified constitutive model.

Mobile products, such as cellular phones, PDA and notebook, are subjected to many different mechanical loads, which include bending, twisting, impact shock and vibration. In this study, a cyclic bending test of the BGA package was performed to evaluate the fatigue life. Special bending tester, which was suitable for electronic package, was developed using an electromagnetic actuator. A nonlinear finite element model was used to simulate the mechanical bending deformation of solder joint in BGA packages. The fatigue life of lead-free (95.5Sn4.0Ag0.5Cu) solder joints was compared with that of lead-contained (63Sn37Pb). When the applied load to the specimen is small, the lead-free solder has longer fatigue life than lead-contained solder. The fatigue crack is initialized at the exterior solder joints and is propagated into the inner solder joints.

Although several artificial disc designs have been developed for the treatment of discogenic low back pain, biomechanical changes with its implantation were rarely studied. To evaluate the effect of artificial disc implantation on the biomechanics of functional spinal unit, a nonlinear three-dimensional finite element model of L4-L5 was developed with 1-mm CT scan data. Biomechanical analysis was performed for two different types of artificial disc having constrained and unconstrained instant center of rotation(ICR), ProDisc and SB Charite III model. The implanted model predictions were compared with that of intact model. Angular motion of vertebral body, forces on the spinal ligaments and facet joint, and stress distribution of vertebral endplate for flexion-extension, lateral bending, and axial rotation with a compressive preload of 400N were compared. The implanted model showed increased flexion-extension range of motion compared to that of intact model. Under 6Nm moment, the range of motion were 140%, 170% and 200% of intact in SB Charite III model and 133%, 137%, and 138% in ProDisc model. The increased stress distribution on vertebral endplate for implanted cases could be able to explain the heterotopic ossification around vertebral body in clinical observation. As a result of this study, it is obvious that implanted segment with artificial disc suffers from increased motion and stress that can result in accelerated degenerated change of surrounding structure. Unconstrained ICR model showed increased in motion but less stress in the implanted segment than constrained model.

The PTO (Power Take-Off) shaft for aircraft, with welded construction using multiple thin membranes, was developed in the 1950s to improve the elasticity of the part. As it is lightweight, stable at high speeds, and has good flexibility, it is used in most of the fighter aircraft. It connects the AMAD (aircraft mounted accessory drive) gearbox with the EMAD (engine mounted accessory drive) gearbox and transmits the rotational power between them. It operates in the high speed range of 10,000-18,000 rpm. In this study, the safety of the PTO shaft made of Ti alloy was investigated using finite element analysis, and the ability to transmit power was demonstrated through a high-cycle fatigue test conducted in a laboratory. Further, the life of the ball joints of the aircraft under high-cycle fatigue test conditions was predicted, and the wear characteristics were analyzed.
In this Paper, the mechanical behavior of two reかangular plates spot-welded under free vibration is investigated in detail. The focus of the analysis is to evaluate the effect of thickness of reinforced plates with equivalent thickness. The results of this the investigation are compared with detailed finite element analysis end experiments of the plates spot-welded for various parameters, such as aspect ratio, arm ratio, and distance ratio of spot-welding Points. The conclusion obtained are as followed. 1. The effect thickness due to spot-weld is very large, such as 55% in comparison with area ratio of spot-welding joint is just 4.52%. 2 The effect of thickness with respect to the distance ratio is maximized when the distance ratio is 0.4.
