MR Imaging of Primary Retroperitoneal Mucinous Cystadenocarcinoma in Pregnant Woman (임산부에서 발생한 원발성 후복막 점액낭샘암종의 자기공명영상 소견: 1예 보고)

  • Primary retroperitoneal mucinous cystadenocarcinoma is a very rare malignancy. To date, 51 cases have been reported, including 3 in pregnant women. Herein, we report magnetic resonance findings of a 31-year-old Korean woman (15 weeks and 3 days pregnant) with primary retroperitoneal mucinous cystadenocarcinoma. On abdominal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), a mass was identified in the retroperitoneal area with a nodular lesion showing heterogeneous signal intensity and focal wall thickening on T1- and T2-weighted images. Exploratory laparotomy and tumor excision were performed. Histological examination revealed primary retroperitoneal mucinous cystadenocarcinoma. The patient subsequently underwent total hysterectomy, bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, and omentectomy for metastatic mucinous cystadenocarcinoma of both ovaries 15 months after her initial surgery.

  • Flood prediction is an important issue to prevent damages by flood inundation caused by increasing high-intensity rainfall with climate change. In recent years, machine learning algorithms have been receiving attention in many scientific fields including hydrology, water resources, natural hazards, etc. The performance of a machine learning algorithm was investigated to predict the water elevation of a river in this study. The aim of this study was to develop a new method for securing a large enough lead time for flood defenses by predicting river water elevation using the a long- short-term memory (LSTM) technique. The water elevation data at the Oisong gauging station were selected to evaluate its applicability. The test data were the water elevation data measured by K-water from 15 February 2013 to 26 August 2018, approximately 5 years 6 months, at 1 hour intervals. To investigate the predictability of the data in terms of the data characteristics and the lead time of the prediction data, the data were divided into the same interval data (group-A) and time average data (group-B) set. Next, the predictability was evaluated by constructing a total of 36 cases. Based on the results, group-A had a more stable water elevation prediction skill compared to group-B with a lead time from 1 to 6 h. Thus, the LSTM technique using only measured water elevation data can be used for securing the appropriate lead time for flood defense in a river.

Effects of climate change and reduction method on water quality in Cheongmicheon watershed (기후 변화에 따른 청미천 유역의 수질 변화 및 저감 대책에 관한 연구)

  • This study aims to investigate the variation of water quality and discharge under the condition of climate change and Best Management Practices (BMPs), which is one of the reduction methods for non-point source pollution. Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model is applied to case in Cheongmicheon watershed. The coefficients required for SWAT model were calibrated using SWAT Calibration and Uncertainty Program. Climate change is considered by using Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) scenarios, RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5. It is known from simulation results that the non-point source pollutant increases under the climate change scenario assuming worse condition. It is also found in this study that an appropriate application of BMPs is able to reduce the quantity and temporal variation of non-point source pollutant effectively.

Lymphovascular invasion as a negative prognostic factor for triple-negative breast cancer after surgery

  • Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the prognostic effects of lymphovascular invasion (LVI) in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) patients who underwent surgical resection. Materials and Methods: A total of 63 non-metastatic TNBC patients who underwent surgical resection were retrospectively investigated from 2007 to 2016 in Inje University Busan Paik Hospital. Pathological tests revealed that 12 patients (19.0%) had LVI. Approximately 61.9% (n = 39) of the patients' samples stained positive for p53. Additional chemotherapy and radiotherapy (RT) were performed in 53 (84.1%) and 47 (74.6%) patients, respectively. Results: The median follow-up period was 39.5 months (range, 5.9 to 123.0 months). The pathological T stage (p = 0.008), N stage (p = 0.014), and p53 positivity (p = 0.044) were associated with LVI. Overall, the 3-year disease-free survival (DFS) rate and overall survival (OS) rate were 85.4% and 90.2%, respectively. Ten patients (15.9%) experienced relapse. LVI (n = 12) was associated with relapses (p = 0.016). p53 positivity was correlated with poor DFS (p = 0.048). Furthermore, LVI was related to poor DFS (p = 0.011) and OS (p = 0.001) and considered as an independent prognostic factor for DFS (p = 0.039). The 3-year DFS of patients with LVI (n = 12) was only 58.3%. Adjuvant RT minimized the negative prognostic effect of LVI on DFS (p = 0.068 [with RT] vs. p = 0.011 [without RT]). Conclusion: LVI was related to the detrimental effects of disease progression and survival of TNBC patients. Thus, a more effective treatment strategy is needed for TNBC patients with LVI.

Flammable Evaluation of Plastics for Living by Cone Calorimeter Test (콘칼로리미터 시험법에 의한 생활용 플라스틱의 가연성 평가)

  • It was conceived from the realization that there was a lack of studies on the fire risk compared to utility and importance of plastic which is widely used. In this study, the fire hazard of five types of plastic products was measured by Cone Calorimeter (ISO 5660-1). As a result, the time to ignition (TTI) of polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) plate delayed TTI (196 s), and polystyrene (PS) plate had the shortest TTI of 19 s. The total heat release (THR) of PS plate was measured at 213.07 % higher than the lowest measured PVC plate. Also, the PS plate will have 1.45 to 4.21 times higher $CO_2$ than other plastics, resulting in the highest incomplete combustion and the greatest possible damage of life. Thus, assessing the risk of fire revealed that PS plate is the most dangerous and PVC is the safest.

Association of dietary patterns with overweight risk and all-cause mortality in children with cancer

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the association of dietary patterns with overweight risk and all-cause mortality in pediatric cancer patients. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Prospective cohort study was undertaken; 83 cancer patients admitted to the pediatric cancer ward at a university hospital in Seoul were included and followed for obesity and death over 24 months. Food consumption data were collected from patients using validated meal order sheets for breakfast, lunch, and dinner at the pediatric cancer ward over 3 days. Using principal component analysis, three dietary patterns were derived from 29 food groups. RESULTS: Eighteen deaths occurred among the patient cohort during the follow-up period. The "spicy & fried meat and fish" dietary pattern was positively associated with overweight risk at both baseline [odds ratio (OR) = 4.396, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.111-17.385, P for trend = 0.023] and after 6 months (OR = 4.088, 95% CI = 1.122-14.896, P for trend = 0.025) as well as all-cause mortality (hazard ratios = 5.124, 95% CI = 1.080-24.320, P for trend = 0.042), when comparing the highest and lowest tertiles after adjusting for covariates. The "fish, egg, meat, and fruits & vegetables" dietary pattern was associated with lower overweight risk after 24 months (OR = 0.157, 95% CI = 0.046-0.982, P for trend = 0.084). CONCLUSION: The results imply that dietary patterns might be associated with weight gain and premature death among pediatric cancer patients.

An experimental study on the habitat characteristics of largemouth bass (생태교란어종 큰입배스의 서식 특성에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • The aim of this study is to investigate the factors affecting the habitat characteristics of largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides), which is one of exotic fishes in Korea. Based on field observation, the laboratory experiments were performed in order to investigate the relationship between water temperature and the habitat characteristics of largemouth bass. It was found that largemouth bass preferred a relatively high water temperature in winter and a low temperature in summer. When the small largemouth bass coexisted with large largemouth bass, the separation of habitats depending on the size of each largemouth bass are observed. In the separated habitat areas, it is also observed that the largemouth bass preferred vicinity of the obstacle such as boulder. From the experiments for preference between water temperature and obstacle, it was observed that a primary consideration in habitat selection was obstacles. It was also observed that when light device was turned on, largemouth bass formed a new habitat.

Development and Performance Analysis of a New Navigation Algorithm by Combining Gravity Gradient and Terrain Data as well as EKF and Profile Matching

  • As an alternative navigation system for the non-GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) environment, a new type of DBRN (DataBase Referenced Navigation) which applies both gravity gradient and terrain, and combines filter-based algorithm with profile matching was suggested. To improve the stability of the performance compared to the previous study, both centralized and decentralized EKF (Extended Kalman Filter) were constructed based on gravity gradient and terrain data, and one of filters was selected in a timely manner. Then, the final position of a moving vehicle was determined by combining a position from the filter with the one from a profile matching. In the simulation test, it was found that the overall performance was improved to the 19.957m by combining centralized and decentralized EKF compared to the centralized EKF that of 20.779m. Especially, the divergence of centralized EKF in two trajectories located in the plain area disappeared. In addition, the average horizontal error decreased to the 16.704m by re-determining the final position using both filter-based and profile matching solutions. Of course, not all trajectories generated improved performance but there is not a large difference in terms of their horizontal errors. Among nine trajectories, eights show smaller than 20m and only one has 21.654m error. Thus, it would be concluded that the endemic problem of performance inconsistency in the single geophysical DB or algorithm-based DBRN was resolved because the combination of geophysical data and algorithms determined the position with a consistent level of error.

A Study of the Gender-Biased Attitudes of Korean Middle School Students toward Home Economics as a Subject: Implementing the Implicit Association Test (암묵적 태도검사(Implicit Association Test, IAT)를 이용한 남녀 중학생의 가정교과에 대한 성편향성 태도 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to develop an Implicit Association Test to measure students' gender-biased attitude toward Home Economics, a required subject in middle-school and to examine the effects of gender, gender-biased attitude toward Home Economics, and gender egalitarianism on the perception of the subject. A total of 508 male and female middle-school students were surveyed using Qualtrics. The results revealed that the students had a gender-biased attitude of perceiving Home Economics as feminine as a whole, and this tendency was more evident among female than male students. To the contrary, their attitudes toward Home Economics as a subject was generally favorable when asked explicitly using self-administered questions. Among the high school elective classes, students preferred 'fashion' most, followed by 'dietary life', 'technology and home economics', and 'family life culture'. Female students, students with patriarchal attitude, and students who has gender-biased attitude toward Home Economics were more likely to perceive Home Economics as an alienated and less important subject. The generally positive explicit attitude toward Home Economics may be the results the social desirability effect due to the education. However, the home economists should develop a plan to overcome the gender-biased implicit attitude in order for the value of Home Economics as a subject to be fully addressed.

Estimation of Trapping Efficiency Using VFSMOD: Application to Cheongmi Basin (VFSMOD를 이용한 토사저감효율 산정: 청미천 유역에서의 적용)

  • 하천으로 유입되어 수질 오염을 야기하는 오염원은 오염 배출원이 명확하여 하나의 점으로 나타낼 수 있는 점오염원(Point Source)과 오염원이 명확치 않은 비점오염원(Non-point)으로 구분된다. 생활하수, 축산폐수와 같이 오염원이 명확한 점오염원은 하천 유입 이전에 처리장을 거쳐 정화작업이 가능한 반면, 비점오염원은 오염원이 명확치 않아 처리에 어려움이 따른다. 또, 오염물의 양과 이동 경로가 예측이 불가능하고 강우시에는 특별한 처리 없이 하천으로 바로 유입된다. 비점 오염원의 종류는 토사, 영양물질, 유기물질, 농약, 바이러스 등 다양하다. 이 중에서 토양에 흡착되어 이동하는 질소와 인은 하천으로 유입되어 부영양화를 야기하는 특성이 있어 더욱 처리가 필수적이다. 이러한 비점오염원으로 인한 수질 오염을 줄이기 위해 여러 최적관리기법(Best Management Practices, BMPs)이 제시되어 있으며 오염 물질의 하천 유입을 차단하는 것에 중점을 둔다. 가장 널리 이용되는 방법으로는 비점오염원 저감시설 중 하천변에 식물체를 설치하여 토양의 유실을 막는 식생대(Vegetative Filter Strip, VFS)가 있다. 식생 밀집 지역의 설치를 통해 표면 유출을 차단하고 토양 유실 감소와 수체로의 오염물질 확산을 막을 수 있다. 이에 VFSMOD-w를 이용하여 강우시 식생대를 통한 토양 유실 감소 효율에 대한 연구를 수행하였다. 연구 대상 지역으로 비교적 수문 및 토양 자료가 풍부한 청미천 유역을 선정하였다. 그 결과, 식생대의 길이와 식생대 내 식물체의 파종간격이 가장 지배적인 영향을 미치는 것이 확인된다. 이때, 식물체의 종류는 식물체 파종으로 인해 변화되는 토양의 수정된 Manning의 조도계수로 구분한다. 모든 강우 및 식물체 조건이 동일할 때, 식생대 내 식물의 파종 간격이 좁고 식생대의 길이가 길수록 토사 저감 효율이 증가하는 결과가 도출되었다. 식물체의 높이, 식물체의 종류 및 식물의 파종간격이 입력 자료로 요구되나 이 중 식물체의 높이는 토사 저감 효율에 영향을 미치지 않는 것으로 나타났다. 또, 동일한 강우 조건에서 식생대의 길이가 0.5 m에서 1.0 m로 2배 증가하였을 때 토사 저감 효율이 두 경우 모두 95% 이상의 효율을 보이는 것이 나타났다. 이는 식생대의 길이가 증가할수록 토사 저감 효율이 증가하나 일정 길이 이상이 되면 대부분의 토사가 저감되는 것을 의미한다. 결론적으로 식생의 파종 간격이 좁을수록 토사 저감 효율이 증가하더라도 식물체의 성장을 고려한 적절한 파종 간격을 선정하여야 한다. 즉, 식생대의 설치는 적절한 파종 간격 및 식생대 길이를 식생대 설치지역의 강우 특성에 따라 결정지어야 한다고 판단된다.
