The studies of seven individuals of Asiatic black bears were carried out with radio telemetry from October 2004 to December 2006 in Jirisan National Park. They were attached radio-transmitter and calculated by the 95%MCP and fixed kernel method(95%, 50%). As a result, Mean annual home ranges for female and male asiatic black bears were 71.66$km^2$ and 90.20$km^2$. The seasonal home ranges were calculated 19.81$km^2$ for females and 33.47$km^2$ for males in spring, 30.48$km^2$ for females and 20.26$km^2$ for males in summer, 22.63$km^2$ for females and 23.23$km^2$ for males in autumn and 0.22$km^2$ for females and 0.78$km^2$ for males in winter(F=4.193, P<0.05). The degree of home range overlapped 38%, 12.5% among females, 22.4% among males. Mean elevation of seven bears was 744$\pm$236m in spring, 682$\pm$253m in summer, 937$\pm$218m in fall and 975$\pm$137m in winter(F=8.526, P<0.001). It is assumed that home range sizes and location were closely correlated to environmental characteristics of the habitats and the seasonal variation of home-range was related to distribution of food sources.

This study analyzes the geographic information system (GIS) and machine learning models to understand the relationship between the appearance of hibernation sites and habitats in order to systematically manage the habitat of Asiatic Black Bear(Ursus thibetanus ussuricus) inhabiting Jirisan National Park, South Korea. The most important environmental factors influencing the hibernation sites was found to be the inclination(41.4%), followed by altitude(20.4%), distance from the trail(10.9%), and age group(7.7%) in the order of their contribution. A comparison between the hibernation habitat and the normal habitat of Asiatic Black Bear indicated that the average altitude of the hibernation sites was 63m, whereas the average altitude of the normal habitat was approximately 400m. The average inclination was found to be $7^{\circ}$, and a preference for the steeper inclination of $12-43^{\circ}$ was also observed. The average distance of the hibernation site from the road was approximately 300m; the range of separation distance was found to be 1,300-2,400m. This was thought to be the result of a safer selection of winter hibernation site by preventing human contact and outside invasion. This study analyzes the habitat environmental factors for the selection of hibernation sites that prevent severe cold and other threats during the hibernation period in order to provide fundamental data for hibernation ecology and habitat management of Asiatic Black Bear.
This study is a survey on the general perceptions of the residents and visitors regarding the Nature Restoration Period in Chilsun Valley in Jirisan National park, and it was designed to establish systematic park management plan for the Special Protected Areas in Korean National Parks. This survey was conducted on the residents of five towns including Chuseong-ri, Gwangjum-dong, Uijung-ri, Uitan-ri and Uipyeong-ri, as well as visitors to Chilsun Valley by using convenience sampling. The result showed that those individuals or groups who responded to the survey were all positive about preservatory effect of Nature Restoration Period in the valley; however they also showed major perceptional differences as to the ways in which the nature restoration period managed. They also disagreed among themselves on the assessment of the extent of damage that could be generated due to the restoration, the appropriateness of the Nature Restoration Period as a management policy and maintenance of the policy in the future. The appropriateness as a policy and the extent of damage due to the Nature Restoration Period particularly showed some serious perceptional differences among five resident groups based on the location of their towns. To minimize current conflict and achieve the goal of Nature Restoration Period, the park management authorities need to communicate more actively with the stakeholders of the local community and NGOs, and secure their support and cooperation by accommodating their ideas and opinions to build a strategic partnership.
The purpose of this study was to identify the phytosociological vegetation structure through a sampling survey of Mt. Jirisan National Park. And it was conducted to provide the latest data for establishing a conservation and management plan for forest ecosystems. As a result of TWINSPAN classification, it was classified into 4 communities. Group I is the Fraxinus mandshurica - Acer pseudosieboldianum Community, group II is the Quercus serrata - Quercus variabilis Community, group III is the Quercus mongolica Community, group IV is the Pinus densiflora Community. Group I is dominated by Fraxinus mandshurica in the canopy layer, and Cornus controversa and Quercus mongolica compete and maintain dominance. Group II is dominated by Quercus variabilis and Quercus serrata in canopy layer, and Styrax obassia and Styrax japonicus compete in sub-tree layer. In group III, Quercus mongolica has a high dominance of 67% in canopy layer and 27% in the sub-tree layer, and Acer pseudosieboldianum competes with the Quercus mongolica in the sub-tree layer. In group IV, Pinus densiflora showed a high dominance of 74% in canopy layer. The sub-tree layer is dominated by Quercus mongolica, and is accompanied by competition between Carpinus tschonoskii and Fraxinus sieboldiana.
The purpose of this study was to interpret ecological characteristics and to estimate successional trend for seven classified forest cover types (Quercus mongolica pure forest, Q. mongolica-Q. serrata forest, Mixed mesophytic forest, Abies koreana-Q. mongolica forest, Fraxinus mandshurica forest, Q. serrata forest, and Carpinus laxiflora forest) in the natural forest of Western Jirisan. Q. mongolica pure forest and A. koreana-Q. mongolica forest which were distributed in a high-altitude ridge had the lowest species diversity index. On the other hand, mixed mesophytic forest and F. mandshurica forest which were mainly distributed in the valley had higher index. Based on characteristics of species diversity and topographic conditions, successional trends for forest cover types were estimated as follows; 1) Q. mongolica pure forest and A. koreana-Q. mongolica forest would be changed toward Q. mongolica-A. koreana forest. 2) Q. mongolica-Q. serrata forest, distributed between ridge and mid-slope, would be changed toward Q. mongolica-C. laxiflora-C. cordata forest. 3) Q. serrata forest, distributed in mid-slope, would be changed toward Q. serrata-Q. mongolica-C. laxiflora forest. 4) Mixed mesophytic forest, F. mandshurica forest and C. laxiflora forest, distributed in valley, would maintain the current condition in terms of species composition.
Moths were collected using a 22W UV black light trap in June through September in 2005 and May, June, August and September in 2006. The study sites were Namsan (Mt. Nam), Jirisan (Mt. Jiri), Woraksan (Mt. Worak) which are part of the Korean National Long Term Ecological Research (KNLTER). There were two common forest communities, Quercus mongolica and Pinus densiflora. The purpose of this study was to compare species diversity of the major plant feeding Lepidoptera in the two forest types at the regional KNLTER sites. We collected a total of 435 species from the KLTER sites in 2005 and 2006. Abundance of moths was highest at Woraksan (Mt. Worak) followed by Jirisan (Mt. Jiri). The Namsan (Mt. Nam) site had the lowest, with five families (Arctiidae, Geometridae, Noctuidae, Notodontidae, and Pyralidae). Analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed statistically significant differences at sampling date in species abundance as a response variable and at site in species richness as another response variable. Although we expected a distinct cluster with the forest type at each study site, one of ordination analyses, nonmetric multidimensional scaling (NMS), showed distinct clusters with the moth assemblages at each site only but NMS did not show any distinct cluster with the different forest types at each site as we expected.
For understanding the tourists' characteristics of several types of ecotourism sites, we surveyed and analyzed the demographic characteristics, travel motivations and cognition of damage in Bukhansan trail, Upo marshes, Jirisan trail and Uljin Keumgang pine tree trail. The field survey were conducted through face-to-face interviews. In the case of Bukhansan trail, many people came to build up their health, so the ratio of eco-tourists and the awareness of environmental damage was low. In Upo marshes, there were many group tourists who want to enhance friendship between the colleagues. And the ratio of eco-tourists, enjoying several activities such as observation or experience about the ecosystems of wetland and bird watching appeared high, but the cognition of tourists about the damage of natural environment was low because the flatland type tour site, Upo marshes has less damage factors comparing with mountain type tour sites. In Jirisan trail, eco-tourists, nature tourists and mass tourists appeared mixed and the cognition of damage was higher than that of flatland type. In the case of Uljin Keumgang pine tree trail, almost indices showed higher values than other sites because the tourists who visited there have high cognition of eco-tourism and nature conservation by limiting entrance. Tourists were generally accepted positively the control method such as collection of entrance fee and visitor reservation system when natural damages are expected.

The amputation of body parts of wild animals can affect their activities in the wild and the behavior of mothers raising their cubs can cause behavioral characteristics in their offspring. In 2017, an Asiatic black bear was caught in a snare at the Jirisan National Park and had a right forefoot amputation. It was released into the wild the same year and gave birth to two cubs. The seasonal analysis of the behavioral rites of five females who gave birth in the same year as this individual showed specific home ranges, activity altitudes, and movement distances compared to other populations. Physical disabilities in the mother could lead to difficulties in food activity, hibernation, and cub-rearing, but the bear's maternal instincts helped to overcome difficulties in the wild and ensure the cubs' survival. It also became a special experience in the process of promoting the restoration of Asiatic black bears at Jirisan National Park. Although the Asiatic black bear's cubs, which grew up in difficult conditions compared to other populations, are not currently causing problems, continuous monitoring will help determine the success of the disabled mother cub-rearing study. Furthermore, these case studies will be used to establish long-term management directions and plans for conflicts with people from various perspectives.

Increasing concern about biodiversity has lead to a rise in demand on the spatial assessment of biological resources such as biodiversity assessment, protected area selection, habitat management and restoration in Korea. The purpose of this study is to create species richness map through data collection and modeling techniques for wildlife habitat assessment. The GAM (Generalized Additive Model) is easy to interpret and shows better relationship between environmental variables and a response variable than an existing overlap analysis and GLM (Generalized Linear Model). The study area delineated by a large watershed contains Jirisan national park, Mt. Baekun and Sumjin river with three kinds of protected areas (a national park, a landscape ecology protected area and an otter protected area). We collected the presence-absence data for wildlife (mammals and birds) using a stratified random sampling based on a land cover in the study area and implemented natural and socio-environmental data affecting wildlife habitats. After doing a habitat use analysis and specifying significant factors for each species, we built habitat suitability models using a presence-absence model and created habitat suitability maps for each species. Biodiversity maps were generated by taxa and all species using habitat suitability maps. Significant factors affecting each species habitat were different according to their habitat selection. Although some species like a water deer or a great tit were distributed at the low elevation, most potential habitats for mammals and birds were found at the edge of a national park boundary or near a forest around the medium elevation of a mountain range. This study will be used for a basis on biodiversity assessment and proected area selection carried out by Ministry of Environment.
For the determination of metamorphic age of the metamorphic rocks distributed in the Ji-san area of Youngnam massif, Sm and Nd isotopic compositions were analyzed for the whole rock and garnet separates. As the result, we obtained 1799 + 11 Ma from the porphyroblastic gneiss, 1776 +30 Ma from the metapelite, 1714+35 Ma from the mafic granulite xenolith within the porphyroblastic gneiss, and 1776+30 Ma from the metapelite occurred as a xenolith within the quartzofeldspathic gneiss. There have been reports of geologic ages similar to such metamorphic ages of Jirisan area from the other portion of the Youngnam massif, which reveals that very intense metamorphism took place over the vast area of Youngnam massif during the period of 1.7-1.8 Ga ago. The granulite facies metomorphism of the Gyeonggi massif also shows the age similar to this period. Such resemblance in their metamorphic ages suggests that these massifs experienced similar tectonothermal events occurred at about the same Precambrian periods, which implies the possibility that the extension of the collision belt between the north and south China blocks does not extend through some places between the Youngnam and Gyeonggi massifs. On the other hand a quarzofeldspathic xenolith of porphyroblastic gneiss show 1928 +42 Ma which is older than above age of the metamorphism and is identical with the zircon U-Pb age of porphyroblastic gneiss indicating the formation age of the protolith of the porphyroblastic gneiss.
