Hydrogen, which can be produced from abundant and widely distributed renewable energy resources, seems to be a promising candidate for solving the concerns for improving energy security, urban air pollution, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The two primary motivating factors for hydrogen economy are fossil fuel supply limitations and concerns about global warming. But the safety issues associated with hydrogen economy need to be investigated and fully understood before being considered as a future energy source. Limited operating experience with hydrogen energy systems in consumer environments is recognised as a significant barrier to the implementation of hydrogen economy. To prevent unnecessary restrictions on emerging codes, standards and local regulations, safety policies based on real hazards should be developed. This article studies briefly the direct impact-distances from hazard events such as hydrogen release and jet fire, and damage levels from hydrogen gas explosion in a confined space. Based on the direct impact-distances indicated in the accident scenarios and consumer environments in Korea, the safety policies, which are related to hydrogen filling station, hydrogen fuel cell car, portable fuel cell, domestic fuel cells, and hydrogen town, are suggested to implement hydrogen economy. To apply the safety policies and overcome the disadvantages of prescriptive risk management, which is setting guidance in great detail to management well known risk but is not covering unidentified risk, hybrid risk management model is also proposed.
The results of the risk assessing on general buses, consisting mainly of diesel-fueled buses, show that the frequency of the instantaneous release is 1.4${\times}$10$^{-3}$ /bus/year, from which the probability of the formation of fireball as a sub event becomes 1.7${\times}$104, and show that the leakage from the CNG-fueled buses is 0.002 event/year. Also, the frequency of gradual release due to a crack is estimated at 3.7${\times}$10$^{-3}$ /buses/year, and a subsequent probability at which this could lead to a jet flame as a sub event is 1.2${\times}$10$^{-3}$ This corresponds to 0.04event/year for the CNG-fueled buses. Dividing all the fired casualties by the running distance of diesel-fueled buses, the risk is 0.091 fire fatalities per 100-million miles. And the total fire risk fur CNG buses is approximately 0.17 per 100-million miles of travel. This means that CNG buses is twice or more dangerous than diesel buses. After all CNG buses are more susceptible to the major fires. In the aspect of the reliability of this study, generic models and the failure data used in assessing the risks of CNG buses are appropriate. However, more accurate physics-based models and databases should be supplemented with this study to provide the better results.

Present study deals with performance analysis and experimental investigation of an inert gas generator (IGG) which can be used as effective means to suppress fire. The IGG uses a turbo-jet engine to generate inert gas for fire extinguishing. It is generally known that a less degree of oxygen content in the product of combustion will increase the effectiveness of fire extinguishing. An inert gas generator system with water injection has advantages of suffocating and cooling effects that are very Important factors for fire extinguishing. Some aspects of influencing parameters, such as, air excess coefficient, compressor pressure ratio, air temperature before combustion chamber, gas temperature after combustion chamber, mass flow rate of water injection etc. on the performance of IGG system are investigated.
The prediction performance of 9 model sets, which combine 3 turbulent models and 3 combustion models, was investigated numerically for turbulent partially-premixed jet flame. The standard ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ (SKE), Realizable ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ (RKE) and Reynolds stress model (RSM) were used as a turbulence model, and the eddy dissipation concept (EDC), steady laminar flamelet (SLF) and unsteady laminar flamelet model (ULF) were also adopted as a combustion model. The prediction performance of those 9 model sets was evaluated quantitatively and qualitatively for Sandia D flame of which flame structure was measured precisely. The flame length was predicted as, from longest to shortest, RSM > SKE > RKE, and the RKE predicted the flame length of the jet flame much shorter than experiment. The flame temperature was over predicted by the combination of RSM + SLF or RSM + ULF while the flame length obtained by RSM + SLF and RSM + ULF was well agreed with the experiment. The combination of SKE + SLF and SKE + ULF predicts well the flame length as well as the temperature distribution. The SKE turbulence model was most superior to the other turbulent models, and SKE + ULF showed the best prediction performance for the structure of turbulent partially-premixed jet flame.
The purpose of the study is to assess the extinguishing concentration of inert gases in engine nacelle fire. The experiment was performed with a two dimensional rectangular bluff body stabilized flames, where the fuel was ejected to counter flow and co-flow against an oxidizer stream. Two inert gases, $CO_2$ and $N_2$, were used for extinguishing agent in the oxidizer and methane was used for fuel. The main experimental parameters were the direction of injecting fuel, the kinds of agent and the velocity ratio between air and fuel streams, which controlled the mixing characteristic near bluff body and the strength of recirculation zone in the downstream. The result shows the flame structure and the mode were strongly dependent with fuel/air ratio and the fuel jet direction. For both flow configurations, the extinguishing concentration of $CO_2$ was smaller than the $N_2$ because of the large heat capacity of $CO_2$. However, the concentration of inert gasesat blowout was much smaller than those in the cup burner and coflow jet diffusion flames, which implies that the extinction mechanism of bluff body stabilized flames was mainly due to the aerodynamic aspect. Compared to co-flow fuel injection, the extinguishing concentration of inert gases under counter flow configuration was lower. The effect of direction might result from the mixing characteristic and strength of recirculation zonearound a bluff body. More details should be investigated for the characteristic of recirculation zone in the wake of bluff body using the LES(Large Eddy Simulation).
Many electronic devices are powered by various rechargeable batteries such as lithium-ion recently, and occasionally the batteries undergo thermal runaway and cause fire, explosion, and other hazards. If a battery fire should occur in an electronic device of vehicle and aircraft cabin, it is important to quickly extinguish the fire and cool the batteries to minimize safety risks. Attempts to minimize these risks have been carried out by many researchers but the results have been still unsatisfied. Because most rechargeable batteries are operated on the ion state during charge and discharge of electricity and the combustion of ion state has big difference with normal combustion. Here we focused on the effect of ions including an electron during combustion process. The effects of an ionized fuel on the flame stability and the combustion products were experimentally investigated in the propane jet diffusion flames. The burner used in this experiment consisted of 7.5 mm diameter tube for fuel and the propane was ionized with th ionizer (SUNJE, SPN-11). The results show that toe overall flame stability and shape such as flame length has no significant difference even in the higher ion concentration. However the fuel ionization affects to the pollutant emissions such as NOx and soot. NOx and CO emissions measured in post flame region decreased by fuel ionization, especially high fuel velocity, i.e. high ion density. TGA analysis and morphology of soot by TEM indicates that the fuel ionization makes soot to be matured.
Rechargeable battery such as lithium-ion battery has been noticed as a kinds of the energy storage system in the recent energy utilization and widely used actually in various small electronic equipment and electric vehicles. However, many thermal runaway caused battery accidents occurred recently, which still is obstacle for advanced application of lithium ion battery. One of the main differences to general fires is the existence of ionized electrolyte with electron during combustion. Therefore, we simply simulated the ion addition effects of battery fires by introducing an ionized fuel in jet diffusion flames. When the ionized methane through a corona discharge was used as fuel, the overall flame stability and shape such as flame length showed no significant difference from normal methane flame, but NOx and CO emissions measured at the post flame region decreased. The ion addition effect of methane oxidation was also numerically simulated with the modeling of hydrogen addition in the mixture. It was confirmed that the hydrogen addition at a fixed temperature had a similar effects on ionization of methane and hence could be modeled successfully.
This paper surveys the fabric weavability and machine efficiency in the various weaving looms such as Projectile, Rapiers, and Air-jet. Used projectile loom was Sulzer-PU, and FAST-R, THEMA-11E, and Picanol-GTX were used for Rapier looms, as the Air-Jet looms, Picanol PAT and OMNI types were used. Using these looms, 5 harness worsted satin fabrics were woven for surveying the fabric weavability and machine efficiency. Warp yam count of fabric is 1/40Nm, Sirofil, and filling is 1/30 Nm, worsted. End breaks of warp and filling directions for the various types of looms are measured and discussed with the mechanism of each loom. Warp and filling yam tensions are also measured and analysed with open width of shedding motion of each weaving machine. And various warp yam tensions with open width of shedding are measured and analysed according to the warp yam in various heald frame. These results fire also discussed with temples such as bar and ring. Warp yam tensions at the various positions on the fabric with various looms are measured and discussed with fabric mechanical properties such as tensile, bending, shear and surface.

An emergency evacuation support system is used to maintain evacuation routes by pressurizing a space inside screens. In cases of fire, it is important to understand the thermal distributions in the tunnel for preventing system failure. In this study, we numerically investigated the effect of fire on an emergency evacuation support system in a large fabric store with some fire scenarios with different combustibles. The critical temperature for system failures was assumed to be $200^{\circ}C$. As a result, the highest temperature was predicted in the ceiling part due to the effect of a ceiling jet, and the fire safety of the screen was secured at distances of 20 to 30 m according to the heat release rate. To prevent the inflow of smoke into the system, it is necessary to maintain more than 5 Pa if positive pressure inside the smoke screen. The results of this study could be useful for designing an emergency evacuation support system.
Korea Gas Safety Corporation is developing consequence analysis system for combustible materials release events to enhance risk assessment technology and its efficiency. Unlike general consequence analysis programs, the final consequence area was implemented through ETA analysis based on API-581 standard, and a convenient user interface was constructed based on HTML5-based responsive web technology. In addition, a phase equilibrium module using third-order state equations (such as Peng-Robinson, SRK, and RK) and fugecity was implemented to analyze the mixture quality. Also. using the consequence analysis algorithm introduced in CCPS books and TNO Yellow Book, we developed material leak analysis module, fireball, pool fire, jet fire, flash fire, and vapor cloud explosion consequence assessment module. In addition, the conditions for calculating the safety distance were prepared with using the control values in the EIGA standard, PAC, and Bevi Reference Book.
