An experimental study of compressible jet flows has been undertaken in a small transonic wind tunnel. The aim of this investigation was to realize a jet simulator in the framework of wing/nacelle integration research and to characterize the jet flow behavior. First, free jet configuration, and subsequently jet flow in co-flowing air stream configuration were analyzed. Flow conditions were those encountered in a typical flight condition of a generic transport aircraft, i.e. fully expanded sonic jet flows interacting with a compressible external flowfield. Conventional experimental techniques were used to investigate the jet flows-Schlieren visualization and two-component Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV). The mean and fluctuating properties were measured along the jet centerline and in the symmetric plane at various downstream locations. The results of two configurations show remarkable differences in the mean and fluctuating components and agree well with the trend observed by other investigators. Moreover, these experiments enrich the database for such flow conditions and verify the feasibility of its application in future aerodynamic research of wing/nacelle interactions.
The characteristics of laminar and turbulent slot impinging jet flows are examined using segregated FEM with SUPG. Turbulent flows are modeled using $Wilcox^{(1)}$$k-\;{\omega}$ turbulence model. The results are validated by comparing with velocity field of the existing experimental data. The distance of the target plate from the nozzle varies between 2, 4 and 5 times the slot jet width. Present study shows that the $k-\;{\omega}$ model gives results which agree well with the existing experimental data. In turbulence flows, the velocity profile of present calculation is more accurate than the existing numerical calculations. In laminar flows, We found tertiary vortex which was not found in the previous numerical study by M. $chen^{(6)}$ et al due to the numerical difference.
Supersonic coaxial, axisymmetric, jets issuing from various kinds of dual coaxial nozzles were experimentally investigated. Four different kinds of coaxial, dual nozzles were employed to characterize the major features of the supersonic, coaxial, dual jets. Two convergent-divergent supersonic nozzles with an impinging angle in the jet axis of the annular jets were designed to have the Mach number 2.0 and used to compare the coaxial jet flows with those discharging from two sonic nozzles. The primary pressure ratio was changed in the range from 4.0 to 10.0 and the assistant jet ratio from 1.0 to 4.0. The results obtained show that the assistant jets from the annular nozzle affect the coaxial jet flows and an increase of both the primary jet pressure ratio and assistant jet pressure ratio produces longer supersonic length of the dual, coaxial jet.
Supersonic jet flow has been applied to many various industrial applications of manufacturing fields. Such a supersonic jet is generally classified by three flow patterns, depending on the flow state at nozzle exit, that is, under-, correctly- and over-expanded flows. Of these three flows, the correctly-expanded supersonic jet is most frequently used since it provides a maximum performance of a flow device. However detailed information on what conditions are the Jet correctly expanded at the exit of nozzle is not well known. In the current study, computations are applied to the axisymmetric, compressible, Navier-Stokes equations. The design Mach number used are 2.0,1.2 and 2.6. The computational results obtained are compared with the previous experimental ones. A theoretical analysis is conducted to predict the major features of the correctly-expanded jet. The results show that the jet core length is increased as Mach number is increased.

The present experiment is conducted to investigate heat transfer characteristics on the impinging surface with secondary flows around circular nozzle jets. The changed vortex pattern around jet affects significantly the flow characteristics and heat transfer coefficients on the impinging surface. The effects of the jet vortex control are also considered with jet nozzle-to-plate distances and main jet velocities. The vortex pattern around a jet is changed from a convective instability to an absolute instability with a velocity suction ratio of the main jet and the secondary counterflow. With the absolute instability condition, the jet potential core length increases and the heat transfer on the impinging surface is increased by small scale eddies. The region of high heat transfer coefficients is enlarged with the high Reynolds number due to increasing secondary peak values. The effect of suction flows is influenced largely with collars attached the exit of the jet nozzle because the attached collar guides well the counterflow around the main jet.
Recently a considerable interest is being concentrated on industrial applications of supersonic Coanda wall jets, but the flow physics are not still understood well. It is of practical importance to evaluate the effectiveness of supersonic Coanda wall jet devices fer such industrial purposes. In the present work, experiments and computations were performed to Set a better understanding of the supersonic Coanda jet physics. The experiments were made using a small blow-down wind tunnel. The operating pressure ratio and the Coanda surface configuration were changed to investigate their influences on the wall jet flows. Two-dimensional Navier-Stokes computations were performed using a TVD finite volume scheme to effectively capture the important wave structures of supersonic Coanda jet flows. Both experimental and computational results showed several important hysterical features of the supersonic Coanda wall jets; the attachment and detachment of supersonic Coanda jet were strongly dependent on the change processes of the operating pressure ratio and the detailed flow configuration.

The present study addresses experimental results to investigate the effect of the jet supply chamber configuration on the sonic/supersonic swirling jets, as the case study. The experiment is carried out using the convergent nozzle with a various different chamber configurations upstream the nozzle throat, which is composed of four tangential inlet holes for the swirling flows. The jet pressure ratio is varied between 3.0 and 7.0. The sonic/supersonic swirling jet flows are specified by the pitot impact and static pressure measurements and visualized using the Shadowgraph method. The results show that the major structures of the sonic/supersonic swirling jet are strongly influenced by the jet supply chamber.

Our previous experimental and numerical investigations of decelerated swirling flows in conical diffusers have demonstrated that water jet injection along the symmetry axis mitigates the pressure fluctuations associated with the precessing vortex rope. However, for swirling flows similar to Francis turbines operated at partial discharge, the jet becomes effective when the jet discharge is larger than 10% from the turbine discharge, leading to large volumetric losses when the jet is supplied from upstream the runner. As a result, we introduce the flow-feedback approach for supplying the jet by using a fraction of the discharge collected downstream the conical diffuser. Experimental investigations on mitigating the pressure fluctuations generated by the precessing vortex rope and investigations of pressure recovery coefficient on the cone wall with and without flow-feedback method are presented.

Turbulent jet flow has been studied in many ways; a plane jet, a rectangular jet, an annular jet, a round jet, a wall jet, a parallel jet, a valve jet, a cross jet, a slit jet and etc. In this report, a 45.deg. cross jet flow was tried by using two same dimensioned nozzels(dia..phi.20)which were set up at the exit of the subsonic wind tunnel. Each jet flows to the direction of 22.5.deg. to the axis of downstream of the mixed flow. The centerline of each jet meets at the distance of 217.3mm and their mixing flow could be imagined to develop beyond that distance, so the measurement was effectuated at X/X$_{0}$=1.2-1.5. The section of the mixed flow a elliptic circle which is formed by the 22.5.deg. inclined flows to the X direction. This experimental study aimed at the investigation of the turbulent mixing process of two jets; the mean velocities, the turbulent shear stresses, the correlation coefficients, and the momentum were respectively measured. The mean velocity distribution profiles of the down-stream component measured in the Y direction coincide well with the empirical equation of Gortler and those measured in the Z direction agree with the equation of H. Schlichting. Other mean velocities V over bar and W over bar components were randomly distributed. The higher values with same order of the intensity of turbulence were largely distributed at the central part of the flow. The momentum was decreased up to 70% by the shock losses and the development of intense turbulences, but it kept its value constantly beyond X/d=14. Two-channel hot-wire anemometer systems (model 1050 series), X-type hot-wire made of tungsten (dia. .phi.e.mu.m, long 3mm, model 0252 T5), a computer(model HP 9845B0, and a plotter (model HP 9872C) were used for the experiments and the analyses.s.
The paper focuses on the integration of a non-linear one-dimensional model of Synthetic Jet (SJ) actuator in a well-assessed numerical simulation method for turbulent compressible flows. The computational approach is intended to the implementation of a numerical tool suited for flow control simulations with affordable CPU resources. A strong compromise is sought between the use of boundary conditions or zero-dimensional models and the full simulation of the actuator cavity, in view of long-term simulation with multiple synthetic jet actuators. The model is integrated in a multi-domain numerical procedure where the controlled flow field is simulated by a standard CFD method for compressible RANS equations, while flow inside the actuator is reduced to a one-dimensional duct flow with a moving piston. The non-linear matching between the two systems, which ensures conservation of the mass, momentum and energy is explained. The numerical method is successfully tested against three typical test cases: the jet in quiescent air, the SJ in cross flow and the flow control on the NACA0015 airfoil.
