Chloroplast genomes of two morphologically similar species, Viola selkirkii and V. ulleungdoensis, were compared. For this comparison, three individuals of V. selkirkii from Ulleung-do Island (UE), Jeju-do Island (JJ), and Hwacheon-gun (HC) and one of V. ulleungdoensis from UE were collected. According to chloroplast genome sequencing of V. selkirkii and V. ulleungdoensis, their genomes were found to contain 156,774-157,454 and 157,575 bp, respectively, and a total of 111 genes. In the comparison of the three V. selkirkii individuals, V. selkirkii obtained in UE was distinguished from those of the other regions of HC and JJ, and in the comparison of the three V. selkirkii individuals and one V. ulleungdoensis individual, V. selkirkii obtained from UE and V. ulleungdoensis were distinguished from the species in the other regions. In addition, a phylogenetic analysis revealed that 32 taxa of Viola formed a monophyletic group (bootstrap support [BS] = 100). The four Viola individuals used in this study (three V. selkirkii and one V. ulleungdoensis) formed a monophyletic group (BS = 100), which was further divided into two subclades. One subclade comprised V. selkirkii found in UE and V. ulleungdoensis, whereas the other subclade comprised V. selkirkii found in HC and JJ. These results support the view of prior studies that V. selkirkii growing in UE and V. ulleungdoensis are the same species.
This study was conducted to determine the geographical distribution and habitat for Rana catesbeiana and Trachemys scripta elegans in order to obtain the current basic data on biota needed for establishing a database on non-indigenous species(NIS) in Jeju-do and to develop management plans applicable to Jeju, starting from March 2005 until May 2006. As a result of an inspection, it was found that the habitat for R. catesbeiana in Jeju includes Hankyeong-myeon, Daejeong-eup, and Ahndeok-myeon. These areas are all located on the western side of Jeju-do, and considered to have favorable conditions for R. catesbeiana to inhabit. Thus, it is unlikely that the population of R. catesbeiana will possibly decrease; what's worse, there exists even a risk that it could not only expand to other regions but also do damage to the population of native insecta, fishes, amphibians and reptiles, so this terrible species ought to be exterminated. More than 92 individuals of T. scripta elegans species were found to inhabit in 15 ponds around Jeju Island. T. scripta elegans. as the topmost predator, could destruct the pond ecosystem, and also cause a problem of water pollution due to its excrement. Counter-measures against T. scripta elegans could include publicity activities encouraging self-control of the release of captive T. scripta elegans, extermination plans using its ecological habits, and sign-posting publicizing its hazard to healthy ecosystem at the areas with high population density of T. scripta elegans or at its habitats with high foot traffic, together with the continuous management of NIS(none-indigenous species).
The lava-calcification which was found in Geunjisul located in Jeju-do (Korea) was investigated to analyse the cause of calcification through the internal factor of cave structure and surroundings in company with relevant ecological system. The volcanic cave is degenerated after formation from volcano lava extravasation, however, the cave became more stronger with solidification and petrification by the reinforced structure of calcification as the cement in concrete buildings unprecedentedly if the lava-calcification occurred in the cave. Such a Progressive Phenomena of lava-calcification was verified in progress first in Geonjigul located at Hyubjae-ri, but those would be found in other simiiar case of caves distributed and connected with seaside of shelly sand beach.
In the present study, we monitored the early development of Saccostrea kegakia subtropical oyster species distributing on rocky intertidal off the northern Jeju Island using scanning electron microscope (SEM). The female oyster collected in early August, 2012 were fully mature exhibiting relatively small eggs ($46.5{\pm}1.4{\mu}m$ in diameter) in the gonad, while testis of the mature male oysters were filled with fully developed sperms of 36.9 ${\mu}m$ in length. The fertilized eggs developed into 2-cell stage with polar body after 1 hr 20 min of fertilization, then followed by Morula stage (3 hr 20 min), Blastula stage (4 hr 50 min), Gastrula stage (7 hr), and trochophore larvae stage (9 hr 30 min). The observed early development of S. kegaki in this study was similar the early development of other oysters, although size of the fertilized eggs were somewhat smaller.

The spatio-temporal variations of nitrate concentrations in groundwater of Jeju Island were evaluated by an analysis of time series groundwater quality data (N = 21,568) that were collected from regional groundwater monitoring (number of wells = 4,835) for up to 20 years between 1993 and 2015. The median concentration of $NO_3-N$ is 2.5 mg/L, which is slightly higher than those reported from regional surveys in other countries. Nitrate concentrations of groundwater in wells tend to significantly vary according to different water usage (of the well), administrative districts, and topographic elevations: nitrate level is higher in low-lying agricultural and residential areas than those in high mountainous areas. The Mann-Kendall trend test and Sen's slope analysis show that nitrate concentration in mid-mountainous areas tends to increase, possibly due to the expansion of agricultural areas toward highland. On the other hand, nitrate concentrations in the Specially Designated Groundwater Quality Protection Zones show the temporally decreasing trend, which implies the efficiency of groundwater management actions in Jeju. Proper measures for sustainable groundwater quality management are suggested in this study.
In this study, we implemented landslide distribution of Jeju Island using ANN and GIS, respectively. To do this, we first get the counter line from 1:2,5000 digital map and use this counter line to make the DEM. for the evaluate the land slide susceptibility. Next, we abstracted slop map and aspect map from the DEM and get the land use map using ISODATA classification method from Landsat 7 images. In the computation processes of landslide analysis, we make the class to the soil map, tree diameter map, Isohyet map, geological map and so on. Finally, we applied the ANN method to the landslide one and calculated its weighted values. GIS results can be calculated by using Acrview program and produced Jeju landslide susceptibility map by usign Weighted Overlay method. Based on our results, we found the relatively weak points of landslide ware concentrated to the top of Halla mountains.
The occurrence of major pest infestation was compared between conventional tea plantation and organic tea plantation at Sulloc tea garden in Dosun-dong, Seogwipo-si, Jeju-do from 2002 to 2009. Tetranychus kanzawai was observed a lot in the second year, but it waned from late June. There was not much difference between conventional farming and organic farming in terms of pest density. Empoasca onukii was infested in the second year of organic farming compared with conventional farming, which highlighted the fact that second year of organic farming requires a special care. Scirotothrips dorsalis was highly dense in the second and third year of conventional farming, but its occurrence was lowered when the farming technique was shifted to organic farming. The number of Homona magnanima peaked 4 times each year. In 2008, the first year of organic farming, saw high occurrence of 771.2 per trap per year. In 2009, the second year, the population per trap dropped to 80, showing a great variance depending on year. The occurrence of Caloptilia theivora peaked 5 times annually. In 2008, the first year of organic farming, an average of 2,779 pests per trap was found, and in the following year, 4,143 pests were observed. It showed that density rose in organic growing period.

This study has been carried out to find the water Quality in coastal sea of fungmun area, southern Jeju Island. In-situ observations and water sampling had been made every month from July 1997 to June 2000. The distributions of water temperature and salinity over the study area have been 13.8~27.0℃ and 30.0~34.7‰, respectively. Salinity is showed low salinity from June to September (rainy season) because of rain. Tsushima Warm Waters (TWW) as ≥15℃ and ≥34‰ influence the adjacent sea around Jeju Island all year round. Yangtse Coastal Waters (YCW) influence the surface layer around Jeju from June to September and so strong stratification (termocline, halocline) resulted at the depth of between 20~30m at outer-sea. However the stratification does not happen even in summer at inner-sea, which seem to be caused due to vertical mixing by wind, waves and tides. A water mass of high value of water temperature and salinity (respectively 14.1~17.7℃, 33.9~34.1‰) stayed at the lower layer in outer-sea all the year round. It is probably formed by mixing between TWW and YSBCW(Yellow Sea Bottom Cold Water). The mean value of DO was the lowest in summer and the highest in winter. COD and TH were the highest in summer and the lowest in winter. However, TP showed the lowest value in summer season, because the mean value of N/P ratio was over 16. The mean of N/P ratio was under 16 in other seasons. The phosphate would be a limiting factor in the growth of phytoplanHon in summer. Nitrate would be a limiting factor in other seasons. Distribution of chlorophyll a did not show any seasonal change in the study period, but especially increased during April and May in the first year(1998) and the second year(1999) all over the study area, which suggested that phytoplankton inhabitation distributed widely in the study area. The space averaged values were the highest for TIN in rainy season and lower for TP in rainy season than in other seasons. It suggests that river runoff influences the inner-sea.

This study histologically describes the gonadal development and reproductive cycle of the abalone, Haliotis discus discus inhabiting Jeju Island of Korea. Gonads displayed histologically definitive seasonal changes. The gonad index (GI) of both females and males was the highest (3.2 and 3.3) in September and was the lowest (1.7 and 1.4) in January and February. Egg diameter increase from early stage in March and reach about $180{\mu}m$ to ripe stage in August. The condition index (CI) was highest in July and lowest in May. The pattern of changes in the GI, egg diameter and CI were similar to the pattern of seasonal changes in gonadal tissues. The female ratio (F/F + M) was 59% (n = 182:127). The reproductive cycle was divided into an inactive stage (January-February), early active stage (March-April), late active stage (May-July), ripe stage (August-October) and spent and degenerative stage (November-January). The main spawning period of H. discus discus was August to October at Jeju Island in 2014.
This study was conducted to eliminate Myocastor coypusMolina, 1782 (Nutria) from Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, South Korea. Habitat identification and eradication were carried out from September to November 2013, and a survey was carried out until June 2022 to check whether the eradication was successful. The habitat was identified with unmanned cameras, interviews, and literature surveys, and the capture was performed using the trapping method with food to attract nutria to the habitat area. The study area for the follow-up survey, which was set relatively wide considering nutria's home range, included wetlands and rivers within 4.0 km2 of the habitat area (eradication area). As a result, nutria's habitat was confirmed only at Songdang Ranch, Songdang-ri, of Jeju Island, with traces of habitat (footprints, excrement, and burrows) confirmed in waterways and ponds within the pasture. Eight individuals were captured, including four females, three males, and one individual in too advanced a state of decay to identify the sex. The follow-up survey thoroughly investigated the habitat and its surroundings, focusing on three areas with permanent water, Seongeup Reservoir, Cheonmi Creek, and Molsuni Pond, but no signs of habitat were identified. Therefore, it is determined that nutria inhabiting Jeju Island has been completely eradicated. It is believed that the successful eradication of nutria in the Jeju Special Autonomous Region was possible due to a synergy between 1) the eradication of nutria at the beginning of the settlement phase through rapid capture after confirming the nutria habitat and 2) the delayed expansion period because of rare presence of wetlands, where water is constantly stagnant, on Jeju Island. These results imply that quickly identifying the ecological characteristics of the species and preventing disturbances before they or at the beginning of the ecological disturbance through control and eradication at the initial stage of settlement before the expansion stage is an effective measure to cope with the influx of alien species.
