  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the changing housing construction in Jeju-do which is composed of two cities(Jeju-si, Seogwipo-si). The number of indigenous population and migrating population of Jeju-do has been increasing every year because it has more beautiful scenery, interesting culture and a higher ratio of natural green area to urban area than other provinces(inland). More than 70% of population in Jeju-si is concentrated in dong-area. As a result, urban area and commercial area are expanding in entire Jeju-do. On the other hand, green area and non-urban area of Jeju-do are decreasing steadily. And there was a lot of changing during a short of time after 2010 because of internationalization and urban development etc.. This study is an analysis about the changing of housing in Jeju-do by statistical data. As a results of the analysis. I discovered that 1) The supply ratio of available housing in Jeju-do is higher than other inland cities in other parts of the country. 2) Housing constructing is influenced by moving-in and moving-out population. 3) There are more detached houses in Jeju-do than apartments. The opposite phenomenon occurs in other provinces (inland cities). However, the number of detached houses is gradually declining in Jeju-do since 2000. 4) Most detached homes in Jeju-do have an area of $60m^2{\sim}90m^2$. Most apartments have smaller areas than $60m^2{\sim}90m^2$. Seogwipo has homes with a larger area than Jeju-si. 5) The ratio of concrete structure houses is increasing at high speed because of constructing of apartment buildings, on the other hand, the ratio of brick structure house is decreasing gradually. Finally, Even though Jeju-do has different from housing culture of inland, it is changing slowly like inland housing types.

  • This study was survey a flora and life form spectrum of 11 uninhabited islets, in jeju-do. The vascular plants of each uninhabited islets were summarized as Beomseom 159 taxa, Chagwi-do 136 taxa, Daryeo-do 81 taxa, Hyeongje-do 61 taxa, Jigwi-do 39 taxa, Munseom 147 taxa, Ran-do 58 taxa, Saeseom 65 taxa, Seogeondo 60 taxa, Seopseom 183 taxa and Wa-do 46 taxa. Floristic richness was in order analyzed to be Seogeon-do 28.62, Ran-do 19.24, Daryeo-do 18.53, Wa-do 16.42, Munseom 16.14, Hyeongje-do 14.76, Seopseom 13.32, Beomseom 13.24, Chagwi-do 6.15, Saeseom 5.86 and Jigwi-do 2.51. Life form spectrum was surveyed to H-$D_5$-$R_4$-e; hemieryptophyte(H) 26.8%, not production seeds($D_5$) 54.4%, clonal growth by stolons and struck roots($R_4$) 46.9% and erect form(e) 30.3%. According to the life form spectrum hemieryptophyte dominated high portions, which suggests islet in jeju-do has hemieryptophytic climate and similar to middle parts in Korean Peninsular. However, were noticed by that it has more therophytes. As a result, Partially shows the characteristics change from the temperate climate to the warm temperate climate or a semitropical climate by a climatic change.

  • In grower pigs, enteric diseases are major economic problem in swine industries. Enteric diseases are attributed to numerous bacterial agents, such as Lawsonia (L.) intracellularis, Brachyspira (B.) hyodysenteriae, B. pilosicoli and Salmonella spp. Therefore we investigated the prevalence of enteric pathogens and found out the correlation of infectious agents in enteric diseases of grower pigs in Jeju-do using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method. A total of 509 fecal samples of grower pigs from 49 pig farms of Jeju-do were collected from May 2006 to June 2007. Diagnostic confirmation was performed based on the detection of bacterial DNA from fecal samples. Based on the PCR methods, B. pilosicoli, B. hyodysenteriae, L. intracellularis and Salmonella spp. were detected in 82 (16.1%), 38 (7.5%), 15 (2.9%), and 12 (2.4%) fecal samples from grower pigs in Jeju-do, respectively. Single infection of enteric pathogen and mixed infection with more than 2 pathogens were detected in 110 (86.6%) and 17 (13.4%) grower pigs, respectively. These results suggest that B. pilosicoli and B. hyodysenteriae are main pathogens of diarrheal disease among grower pigs in Jeju-do. Therefore, accurate control strategy for enteric pathogens should be warranted in Jeju-do.

  • A paleoparasitological survey to detect helminth eggs was performed in archaeological sites of Jeolla-do and Jeju-do, the Republic of Korea. Total 593 soil samples were collected in 12 sites of Jeolla-do and 5 sites of Jeju-do from April to November 2011, and examined by the methods of Pike and coworkers. A total of 4 helminth eggs, 2 eggs each for Trichuris trichiura and Ascaris sp., were found in soil samples from 1 site, in Hyangyang-ri, Jangheung-eup, Jangheung-gun, Jeollanam-do. The egg-recovery layer was presumed to represent a 19th century farm, which fact suggested the use of human manures. This is the third archaeological discovery of parasite eggs in Jeolla-do. Additionally, no helminth eggs in archaeological sites of Jeju-do is an interesting problem to be solved in the further investigations.
