We report a new record of Jasminum albicalyx Kobuski in Vietnam. The plant differs from J. pedunculatum Gagnep., a closely related taxon, by foliar and floral characters such as less number of lateral veins, presence of domatia at vein axils on the abaxial surface of leaf, smaller bracts, white calyx having more number of lobes and less number of lobes in corolla. Morphological description, line drawing and color photographs are provided in addition to the species key of allied species of Jasminum albicalyx in Vietnam.
Jasminum attenuatum Roxb. ex G. Don, a species of Oleaceae, was recently found in Kon Ka Kinh National Park of Vietnam that represents a new record to the flora of the country. The plant can be differentiated from its allied species J. latipetalum C.B. Clarke and J. simplicifolium subsp. funale (Decne) Kiew by the shape of its leaf blade, in having 5-20 flowered inflorescence, linear bracts, and obconic and glabrous calyx with shorter lobes. The present study provides the species description, illustrations, micrographs by scanning electron microscope of the pollen grains, and important taxonomic notes. Furthermore, a comparison of the diagnostic characters between this species and the above mentioned related species is made.
The ethanolic extract of Jasminum sambac leaves were tested for its cytotoxicity and possible antinociceptive activity in experimental animals. The extract showed potent cytotoxic activity in brine shrimp lethality assay and the LC50 was found only 25 mg/ml. The extract significantly and dose dependently inhibited the acetic acid induced writhing in mice (56.83%, P < 0.001 and 43.17%, P < 0.001 for 500 and 250 mg/kg body weight, respectively). The results supported its traditional uses.

Objectives : Jasminum officinale L. var. grandiflorum is used as a traditional or folk remedy in China to treat arthritis, hepatitis, duodenitis, conjunctivitis, gastritis, and diarrhea. In this study, we aimed to study the hepatocyte protective activity and molecular mechanism of Jasminum officinale L. var. grandiflorum aqueous extract (JGW) using HepG2 hepatocyte cell lines. Methods : HepG2 cells were pretreated with diverse concentrations of JGW, and then the cells were exposed to tert-butyl hydroperoxide (tBHP) for inducing oxidative stress. Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) production, glutathione (GSH) concentration, mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) and cell viability were measured to investigate hepato-protective effects of JGW. Phosphorylation of AMP-activated protein kinases (AMPK), acetyl coenzyme A carboxylase (ACC) and effects of compound C on cell viability were examined to observe the role of AMPK on JGW-mediated cytoprotection. Results : Pretreatment with JGW (10-300 ㎍/mL) significantly suppressed cytotoxicity induced by tBHP in a concentration dependent manner and reduced the expression of cleaved PARP and cleaved caspase-3 proteins related to apoptosis in HepG2 cells. In addition, pretreatment with JGW significantly prevented the increase in H2O2 production, GSH depletion, and lower MMP induced by tBHP. Treatment with JGW (30 minutes of incubation and concentrations of 100 and 300 ㎍/mL) increased the phosphorylation of AMPK and ACC and treatment with compound C, a chemical inhibitor of AMPK, inhibited the cytoprotective effect of JGW. Conclusions : Our results demonstrated that JGW may protect hepatocytes from oxidative stress via activation of AMPK.
Large inversions are well characterized in the chloroplast genomes of land plants. In contrast, reports of small inversions are rare and involve limited plant groups. In this study, we report the widespread occurrence of small inversions ranging from 5 to 50 bp in fully and partially sequenced chloroplast genomes of both monocots and dicots. We found that small inversions were much more common than large inversions. The small inversions were scattered over the chloroplast genome including the IR, SSC, and LSC regions. Several small inversions were uncovered in chloroplast genomes even though they shared the same overall gene order. The majority of these small inversions were located within 100 bp downstream of the 3' ends of genes. All had inverted repeat sequences, ranging from 11 to 24 bp, at their ends. Such small inversions form stem-loop hairpin structures that usually have the function of stabilizing the corresponding mRNA molecules. Intra-molecular recombination between the inverted sequences in the stem-forming regions are responsible for generating flip-flop orientations of the loops. The presence of two different orientations of the stem-loop in the trnL-F noncoding region of a single species of Jasminum elegans suggests that a short inversion can be generated within a short period of time. Small inversions of non-coding sequences may influence sequence alignment and character interpretation in phylogeny reconstructions, as shown in nine species of Jasminum. Many small inversions may have been generated by parallel or back mutation events during chloroplast genome evolution. Our data indicate that caution is needed when using chloroplast non-coding sequences for phylogenetic analysis.
In order to elucidate the intergeneric relationshiops within Korean Oleaceae including the endemic Abeliophyllum distichum, 19 species and 9 varieties of 9 genera were investigated. A cladistic analysis based on 18 characters revealed close relationships among (1) Osmanthus, Chiononthus, Fraxinus, (2) Abeliophyllum, fontanesia, Forsythia, and (3) Ligustrum, Syringa, and well accorded with the pollen morphological result. Jasminum was connected to the branch of Ligustrum possibly owing to a sampling error. A hypothesis on the origin of Abeliophyllum was drawn that it originated from Fontanesi or less probably from the common ancestor of Fontanesia and Forsythia.

This study was conducted of Korean native plants to screen herbicidal activity which could be used for the development of new natural herbicides. Ninety-eight plants were collected from Wan Island, Chollanamdo in Korea and their methanol extracts were obtained. Herbicidal activities of the methanol extracts were determined by seed bioassay using canola (Brassica napus L.) seedlings. Among ninety-eight species, twenty plants were highly herbicidal ($GR_{50}<1,000\;{\mu}g\;g^{-1}$): Abies holophylla MAXIM., Ailanthus altissima (MILL.) SWINGLE, Anthemis nobilis L., Aralia elata SEEM., Artemisia iwayomogi KITAMURA, Asarum sieboldii MIQ., Brassica campestris subsp. napus var. nippo-oleifera MAKINO, Clematis terniflora DC., Crataegus scabrida SARG., Gnaphalium affine D. DON, Jasminum nudiflorum LINDL., Kalopanax pictus (THUNE.) NAKAI, Machilus japonica S. et Z., Myrica rubra S. et Z., Osmunda japonica THUNB., Phytolacca esculenta V. Houtte, Platanus occidentalis L., Quisqualis indica L., Rubus hirsutus THUNB., Yucca smalliana FERN. Fifty plants were shown moderate herbicidal activity $(1,000\;{\mu}g\;g^{-1}, however, twenty-eight plants were not shown any herbicidal activity.

Aroma has been used for healing for a long time. The healing effects depend on aroma used. We made gas sensor array system to classify aromas systematically. We used outputs of sensors as the input to IAFC neural network. Results show that the neural network successfully classified jasmine, orange, roman chamomile, and lavender into 4 classes, and classified without any error.
RAPD analysis was performed to discuss the taxonomic status and phylogenetic relationships among the tribe Forsythieae and related groups. Two hundred and eighteen scorable polymorphic bands were detected from fourteen oligonucleotide primers. From the results of RAPD analysis by Nei and Li's genetic distance, each individuals of Abeliophyllum distichum showed high genetic relationships with ranging from 0.085 to 0.301, also the genus Forsythia showed from 0.042 to 0.655 among the species and populations. But, Abeliophyllum and Forsythia showed distinct dissimilarity, ranging from 0.610 to 1.258. And genetic differences among the population of Forsythia were 0.042 in F. koreana, 0.275 in F. saxatilis, 0.275 in F. ovata, 0.279 in F. nakaii, and 0.249 in F. viridissima. The UPGMA phenogram of tribe Forsythieae based on the results of RAPD analysis were presented that Abeliophyllum is distinct genus different from Forsythia. NJ tree which applied as the outgroups Fontanesia and Jasminum was derived, and it showed that tribe Forsythieae might be a monophyletic group. The genus Fontanesia was showed as sister group of tribe Forsythieae. Among the populations of taxa in Forsythia, F. koreana and F. saxatilis were more closely related, and F. ovata and F. nakaii were very closely related to F.japonica. And Fontanesia was the sister group of tribe Forsythieae.
