  • Japanese encephalitis has been prevalent for long time in the Far East and many patients have been reported in both South East and Mid-West Asia recently. Recently, vaccine was used in prevention of this viral disease of man which was derived from formalin inactivated virus inoculated into mouse brain, but live attenuated active vaccine for human is not developed yet. Author inoculated Japanese encephalitis virus into several cell culture strains for development of live attenuated encephalitis virus strain and the results were as follows: 1. Japanese encephalitis virus was inactivated rapidly in cell free medium at $36^{\circ}C$ and totally inactivated by 72 hours. 2. In growth curve of Japanese encephalitis virus in HeLa cell cultures, maximal multiplication of the virus was occured at 4th day and virus multiplication was continued for at least 12 days. 3. After succeeding passage of the virus in HeLa cell cultures and human esophagus epithelial cell cultures, infectivity of virus for mice was disappeared from 2nd passage in HeLa cell cultures and 3rd passage in esophagus epithelial cell cultures. 4. In inoculation to monkey kidney epithelial cells and chick embryo cell cultures, infectivity of the virus for mice was continued after 10th passages.

  • The aim of this study was to report on the improvement of shoulder pain resulting from disorders of the rotator cuff such as impingement syndrome and adhesive capsulitis, by manual acupuncture (MA) and pharmacopuncture (PA) following origin/insertion technique (OIT) of applied kinesiology (AK). Two patients were treated with MA and PA after OIT on shoulder muscles. The Numerical Rating Scale and the assessment of the Japanese Orthopedic Association scores were used to assess the pain, and ultrasound images were taken to compare treatment outcome. This study showed that MA and PA following OIT may be an effective treatment for impingement syndrome and adhesive capsulitis.

  • A comparative study between 17 Japanese and 19 Indian patients with oral squamous cell carcinomas (OSCCs) revealed that the tumour prognostic indicator mean vessel density (MVD) count for angiogenesis was relatively high at 57.1 in Indian as compared to 39.3 in Japanese (P=0.001) cases, whereas the lymph-vessel density (LVD) count for lymphangiogenesis was lower (12.8 vs 48.0, P=0.002). Both male and female Indians had higher MVD counts, but LVD counts were only slightly lower in females. MVD count was relatively high among the cases below 65 years old in both the countries (P=0.4). Japanese cases with Tongue cancer had higher MVD count, but the Indian cases had lower LVD counts. Size-wise, T2 and T3 had higher counts of MVD both in Indian and Japanese cases. MVD and LVD count was higher in grades II and III both in Japanese and Indian cases. There was insignificant difference of the MVD counts among smokers, but the tobacco chewers in Indian cases had higher counts of MVD and LVD (P value by Bartlett test 0.35, 0.57 respectively). The hot-spots of tumour sites had variable rates of lymphocyte infiltration showed higher MVD counts in all the cases. Although the clinical characteristics and demographic variables usually relate to MVD and LVD counts, the tendency of higher values, especially among tobacco chewers, identified as the highest risk group for occurrence of oral cancer needs to be investigated further.

  • "Kenjurok" is a set of medical records of Todo Yoshimasu, a Japanese docotr in the eighteenth century, who suggested that all diseases have originated from a poison, which is his own pathological term describing abnormal states of the body, The 54 records in "Kenjurok" were analyzed in statistical respects, including gender ratio, demographic distribution of patients, types of diseases, and herbal prescriptions used. Among 54 cases, male patients outnumbered female, as much as four times. The patients were quite evenly distributed according to ages. In 23 cases out of 54, abdomen palpation data were mentioned, Majority of the prescriptions used were originated from Sanghanron(傷寒論:Treaties on Febrile Diseases)/Geumgeyoryak(金匱要略: Synopsis of Golden Chamber). In frequency of use of prescriptions, however, showed somewhat different result, that is although Sanghan/Geumge prescriptions were used most often, esoteric prescriptions handed down in his family also composed significant part. The speculations derived from these statistical results are: Although Todo favored abdommen palpation to locate the poison and to decide a prescription, the proportion of abdomen palpation was not as high as expectation, He did use prescriptions not only in Sanghan/Geumge, but also other diverse prescriptions, rather often than not, which are regarded unique Japanese traditional prescriptions including poisonous minerals such as mercury and arsenic.

  • The study targeted Japanese employees who have visited hospital for spinal disorder. The study analyzed work environment and pain relief methods of work-related back pain patients, and the relationship between back pain and other body parts. The purpose of this study was to provide draw up measures for patients with back pain and to provide basic data for the sustainable prevention program. The study result of back pain, in other words, employees suffering from lumbago, had disparity between occupations; the highest number of patients were made up of 16-years or above long-serving employees, and below 5-years of short-serving employees. There were more patients complaining of chronic lumbago than acute lumbago, and patients recognized poor posture as the primary cause of lumbago. Furthermore, 99.5% of spinal disorder patients complain back pain, 23.2% use only alternative therapy, and 15.2% visit clinic and hospital with alternative therapy. Patients showed pain reduction and high satisfaction after using alternative therapy. The study targeted Japanese employees where complement therapy is more generalized than that of Korea, and thus there should be multilateral management programs provided in Korea as well.

  • We identified the characteristic impairmants of linguistic semantic memory in patients with prodromal Alzheimer's disease(AD) and mild AD. To elucidate the earliest changes of semantic language function in subjects with AD, performances on confrontation naming test and verbal fluency task were compared among patients with AD patients (n=20), mild AD patients (n=27) and healthy elderly controls (n=20). Tasks in this study included the confrontation naming test of Test of Lexical Processing in Aphasia(TLPA/Japanese) and one-minute verbal fluency task (semantic/ phonetic categories). The results were as follows: 1) Performances of the prodromal AD group showed the comparable to those of the control group on the confrontation naming test, 2) In the semantic/phonetic verbal fluency tasks, the performances of the control group were better than those of the prodromal AD and mild AD groups, but no significant differences were shown between the prodromal AD and the mild AD group.

  • Introduction: Mammography is the most basic modality in breast cancer imaging. However, the overlap of breast tissue depicted on conventional two-dimensional mammography (2DMMG) may create significant obstacles to detecting abnormalities, especially in dense or heterogeneously dense breasts. In three-dimensional digital breast tomosynthesis (3DBT), tomographic images of the breast are reconstructed from multiple projections acquired at different angles. It has reported that this technology allows the generation of 3D data, therefore overcoming the limitations of conventional 2DMMG for Western women. We assessed the detectability of lesions by conventional 2DMMG and 3DBT in diagnosis of breast cancer for Japanese women. Methods: The subjects were 195 breasts of 99 patients (median age of 48 years, range 34~82 years) that had been pathologically diagnosed with breast cancer from December 20, 2010 through March 31, 2011. Both conventional 2DMMG and 3DBT imaging were performed for all patients. Detectability of lesions was assessed based on differences in category class. Results: Of the affected breasts, 77 (75.5%) had lesions assigned to the same categories by 2DMMG and 3DBT. For 24 (23.5%) lesions, the category increased in 3DBT indicating improvement in diagnostic performance compared to 2DMMG. 3DBT improved diagnostic sensitivity for patients with mass, focal asymmetric density (FAD), and architectural distortion. However, 3DBT was not statistically superior in diagnosis of the presence or absence of calcification. Conclusions: In this study, 3DBT was superior in diagnosing lesions in form of mass, FAD, and/or architectural distortion. 3DBT is a novel technique that may provide a breakthrough in solving the difficulties of diagnosis caused by parenchyma overlap for Japanese women.

  • Objective : This study reviews the articles about 'Side effect' published in the Japanese Journal of Oriental Medicine to better understand about side effects of herbal medication and to encourage clinicians, the authorities and the public to establish side effects reporting system. Method : We searched articles published in the Japanese Journal of Oriental Medicine by using keyword '副作用(Side effect)' in the CiNii. Results : Among the 118 articles collected, 14 are clinical articles about side effect of prescriptions, 13 are reports about side effect of prescriptions presented from Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, 36 are clinical articles about relief of side effects derived from taking western medicine by taking a herbal prescription, 8 are studies about the effect of a herbal prescription combined with western medicine or comparative studies between a herbal prescription and western medicine, and so on. Conclusions : Lots of articles deal with side effects of Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata, Bupleuri Radix and so on. When side effects occurred, removing a certain herbal drug or quitting a herbal prescription is helpful to relieve or disappear the side effects. And Side effects reporting system should be established to guide safe medication use and treatment for patients. In order to establish side effects reporting system, the standardization of herbal drugs is needed.
