Background: Bronchial anthracofibrosis, which is defined as bronchial narrowing with black pigmentation of the overlying bronchial mucosa, is frequently associated with tuberculosis. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between bronchial anthrocofibrosis and to identify the clinical and radiological characteristics of non-tuberculous bronchial anthracofibrosis. Methods: All patients who showed bronchial anthracofibrosis in more than one segment on a bronchoscopic examination from January 2003 to July 2006 at Kangnam St. Mary's hospital were enrolled in this study. The underlying diseases, baseline clinical characteristics, characteristic findings on a computed tomogram (CT) of the chest, pathologic findings of the bronchial mucosa, and the clinical response to steroid therapy were analyzed retrospectively. Results: A total 54 patients (19 males, 35 females) were enrolled with a mean age of 75 years. The most common presenting symptoms were cough, sputum and dyspnea. The predominant X-ray findings were peribronchial soft tissue attenuation with or without calcification, mediastinal lymphadenopathy with or without calcification and atelectasis. Fourteen non-tuberculous anthracofibrosis patients were treated with steroid. Nine patients were improved clinically, and 6 patients were improved radiologically. Conclusion: Bronchial anthracofibrosis is frequently associated with various pulmonary diseases not only tuberculosis but also COPD pneumonia etc.

This study was carried out to investigate the effect of modified-atmosphere packaging (MAP) on the quality change of "Tabor" tomatoes during long-term exportation periods. Hydroponics tomatoes were harvested at the turning stage, sorted, and box packed and then packaged in nylon film with a pallet. The packaged pallet was filled with a gas composition (5% $O_2$, 1% $CO_2$, and 94% $N_2$) and stored at $10^{\circ}C$ for three weeks. The quality changes in weight loss, firmness, color, acidity, soluble solids, and microorganism growth were measured every 7 day interval. During the initial storage, the pallet-scale MAP showed slightly higher weight loss and firmness changes when compared to the conventional pallet. The total color change (${\Delta}E$) during ripening was delayed 10% under MAP storage. Acidity, soluble solids and phenolic compound contents decreased with increases in storage time regardless of the storage method; however, the quality changes of tomatoes were delayed in the MAP pallet. Furthermore, the decay rate of the pallet-scale MAP stored for 14 days was less than that of the conventional pallet, and the number of microorganisms was approximately 30% lower in the pallet-scale MAP, showing a positive effect on marketability. These results suggested that the pallet-scale MAP of tomatoes could ensure higher quality and longer storage periods than conventional pallet storage.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to reconsider the necessity of stroke-related educational programs by investigating early symptoms of stroke that emergency medical technicians (EMTs) may experience. Methods: An interview survey was carried out, targeting all EMTs 298 people who were working at 119 fire safety centers and local units in Jeollabuk-do province, from April 1 to 30, 2011. An interviewer administered questionnaire was used to obtain data on ETMs' demographic characteristics, educational level on stroke, and awareness level about early symptoms of stroke and treatment-related characteristics of stroke patients. Results: The results showed that 63.2% of those surveyed had completed the required educational programs on stroke during the past year. The level of awareness about early symptoms of stroke and assessment of stroke patients' condition was relatively high for women, those who were 30 years under, low position people, emergency service practitioners, emergency medical technicians, and people who have completed education, respectively. It was also turned out that 82.8% of those surveyed took stroke patients to the nearest hospitals first so that they could receive appropriate treatment. The level of awareness about early symptoms of stroke and assessment of stroke patients' condition in people who have completed education were higher than non-complete. The level of awareness about early symptoms of stroke was positively correlated with confidence, satisfaction and appropriateness in treatment of stroke patients. Conclusions: These results strongly suggest that it is necessary to operate specialized educational programs to enhance EMTs' appropriate awareness of the early symptoms of stroke and assessment of stroke patient's condition.

Background : Drowning represents the third most common cause of all accidental deaths worldwide. Although few studies of submersion injury were done in Korea, the subjects were mainly pediatric patients. The purpose of this study is to describe the clinical feature of submersion injury in adults. Methods : The medical records of 31 patients with submersion injury who were >15 years of age and admitted to Kyungpook National University Hospital from July 1990 to March 2003 were retrospectively examined. Results : The most common age-group, cause, and site of submersion accidents in adults were 15-24 years of age, inability to swim, and river followed by more than 65 years of age, drinking, and public bath respectively. The initial chest radiographics showed bilaterally and centrally predominant distribution of pulmonary edema at lung base in about 90% of patients with pulmonary edema represented by submersion injury but at only upper lung zone in 10%. Eventually, 25 patients (80.6%) survived without any neurologic deficit and 2 patients (6.5%) with significant neurologic deficit, and 4 patients (12.9%) died. Age, arterial gas oxygenation, and mental status among baseline variables showed significant difference for prognosis. Conclusions : More than 65 year of age, drinking, and occurrence in public bath were relatively important in submersion injury of adults, and the successful survival of 80.6% of patients suggests that cardiopulmonary resuscitation should be intensively done in even adults.

Subinhibitory concentrations (sub-MICs) refer to concentrations below minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs). The antimicrobial agents may be present at relatively high concentration, at least higher than bacterial MIC and thereafter be deserted off a surface and function at sub-MICs, perhaps by interfering with bacterial metabolism. Consequently, the aim of this study was to determine the effects of growth, in the presence of sub-MICs of antimicrobial agents, on the cell surface properties and virulence factors of mutans streptococci and to investigate the efficacy of a chemical approach in vitro. Streptococcus mutans Ingbritt and Streptococcus sobrinus 6715-7 were used. Eight antimicrobial agents (Sanguinaria extract;SG, Chlorhexidine digluconate;CHX, Fluoride;F, Propolis;PP, Hydrogen peroxide;HP, Triclosan;TC, Sodium dodecyl sulfate;SDS Cetylpyridinium chloride; CC) were diluted serially in broth to determine MICs and to compare the growth rate, acid production, hydrophobicity, adhesion activity to saliva coated hydroxyapatite, glucan synthesis and cellular aggregation of experiment groups (in the presence of sub-MICs) with those of control (in the absence of antimicrobial agents). Sub-MICs of antimicrobial agents affected the growth of cells, hydrophobicity, and adhesion of bacteria to saliva coated hydroxyapatite and glucan synthesis. They also resulted in a significant reduction in pH after 12 hours (p<0.05). By cells pretreated with proteinase K, either the aggregation induced by antimicrobial agents was completely inhibited or the aggregation titers were markedly increased. According to the results of the present study, each antimicrobial agent at sub-MICs could affect similar as its known action mechanism and could continually inhibit cariogenic bacteria at such concentrations. Thus, the use of these antimicrobial agents would be one of the effective methods to prevent dental caries.

Many studies have shown that there is a strong relationship between the congenitally missing primary teeth and their succedaneous permanent teeth. However, especially in case of lower anterior region, we can observe the existence of permanent teeth even though their precedent primary teeth were missed at times. The purpose of this study was to reveal the relationship between the congenitally missing primary lower anterior teeth and their succedaneous permanent teeth in Korean children. Total of 14,307 children, under 6 years of age, who attended the department of pediatric dentistry, Seoul National University Dental Hospital, Seoul, Korea from January 1st 2005 to September 5th 2008 were radiologically examined using the panoramic x-ray in order to analyze the relationship between the congenitally missing primary lower anterior teeth and their succedaneous permanent teeth. The results were as follows : 1. The prevalence of congenitally missing lower anterior teeth in primary dentition was 0.24%. The odds ratio of both the primary and permanent anterior teeth being present was 7163.5 and only the permanent anterior teeth being present was 0.79. 2. The percentage of all succedaneous permanent teeth being present was 44.12% in cases of missing lower primary anteriors. The odds ratio of at least one succedaneous permanent teeth being present in cases of bilateral primary anterior teeth missing was 1.57 times more common than in cases of unilateral primary teeth missing. 3. The odds ratio of primary missing teeth being unilateral was 2.2 times higher in females. Moreover, the odds ratio of succedaneous permanent teeth being present in cases of primary teeth missing was 2.22 times higher in males.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the color stability of new silorane-based composite resin compared with methacrylate-based composite resins after immersion in 3 staining solutions. One silorane-based composite(Filtek P90) and 3 methacrylate -based composites(Filtek Z250, Filtek Z350, Tetric Ceram) were evaluated. Twenty disk-shaped specimens($10{\times}2mm$) of each of 4 composite resins were prepared. The specimens were then divided into 4 groups of 5 specimens each and immersed in 3 staining solutions( coffee, red wine, curry solution) or distilled water(control) for 28-day test period. Color of the specimens was measured with a spectrophotometer(Color Eye 7000A) using CIE $L^*a^*b^*$ color space relative to CIE standard illuminant D65 at baseline, 1day, 3days, 7days, 14days, 21days and 28days after staining. The color differences( ${\Delta}{E^*}_{ab}$) were calculated. The results were obtained as follows ; 1. The mean color changes(${\Delta}{E^*}_{ab}$) of the composites were greatest in curry solution, then red wine, coffee and distilled water, in decreasing order. 2. The mean color changes(${\Delta}{E^*}_{ab}$) of the composites were greatest in Z350, Z250, Tetric Ceram and P90, in decreasing order.

The objective of this in vitro study was to detect and monitor demineralization and remineralization of primary teeth according to restorative materials using quantitative light-induced fluorescence (QLF). A single bur hole was drilled on the each sound forty eight primary anterior teeth, and the specimens were divided into three groups. The cavity was restored with $Filtek^{TM}$ Z250(Group 1), F2000(Group 2), $Ketac^{TM}$ N100(Group 3) following the manufacturer's instructions. The teeth were subjected to the demineralizing buffer for 3 days, and then subjected to a remineralizing buffer for 14 days. The change of mineral loss(${\Delta}Q$) according to the stages was evaluated by QLF and the following results were obtained: 1. When demineralization was done, ${\Delta}Q$ was increased as follows. : Group 1 ($-110.79\;{\pm}\;27.77$) < Group 2 ($-104.84\;{\pm}\;28.95$) < Group 3 ($-90.16\;{\pm}\;21.87$) : Resistance to demineralization was statistically significant in Group 3. 2. There was a statistically significant increase in ${\Delta}Q$ of all groups since 1st day of remineralization 3. The rate of remineralization, ${\Delta}$(${\Delta}Q$)/day, showed significant high value in each group on the 1st day then decreased rapidly. 4. There was no statistically significant difference in the degree of remineralization among restorative materials.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the preventive effect of commercially available anticariogenic products, specifically, the tooth cream containing Casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate(CPP-ACP), fluoride varnish and low-level fluoride mouthrinse on enamel erosion induced by carbonated beverage in a short period of time. Enamel specimens were treated as follows and were then kept in artificial saliva for 24 hours followed by further processing by alternately soaking them in Cola beverage and in distilled water for 1 minute each five times. Group 1: control group (no treatment) Group 2: tooth cream with CPP-ACP Group 3: fluoride varnish (1,000 ppm F) Group 4: low-level fluoride mouthrinse (227 ppm F) Group 5: fluoride varnish + tooth cream with CPP-ACP Group 6: low-level fluoride mouthrinse + tooth cream with CPP-ACP Microhardness and erosion depth were measured and the mineral loss of each specimen was evaluated by measuring the volumetric fluorescence change(${\Delta}Q$) against the stable fluorescent grid using quantitative light-induced fluorescence(QLF). The experiment lasted for 6 days repeated each day. The results were as follows: 1. The microhardness was increased as follows: Group $1{\leq}2{\leq}4$<6<$3{\fallingdotseq}5$. 2. The mean erosion depth was increased as follows: Group $5{\fallingdotseq}3$<6<$4{\fallingdotseq}2{\fallingdotseq}1$. 3. The ${\Delta}Q$ was increased as follows: Group $1{\fallingdotseq}2{\leq}4{\leq}6{\leq}3{\fallingdotseq}5$. The decrement of ${\Delta}Q$ was similar between group 1 and 2, group 4 and 6 and group 3 and 5. 4. The ${\Delta}Q$ showed positive correlation with microhardness (r=0.96, p<0.05), while it was negatively correlated to erosion depth (r=-0.96, p<0.05).
