In this paper, the I-resistance curve of low-carbon steel with 3 mm thickness was investigated for various crack ratios. The experiments were carried out for the center cracked tension (CCT) specimen with about 50 mm width on an instron machine. The plane stress fracture toughness obtained by the Simpson's formula was Ii. = 24.96 kgffmm. Simpson's formula which considers crack growth in obtaining J integral showed more conservative lin than Rice's and Sumpter's. For materials that may be approximated by the Ramberg and Osgood stress strain law, the relevant crack parameters like the J integral, load line displacement are approximately normalized. Crack driving forces in terms of the I integral are computed for low-carbon steel CCT specimen using the above estimation scheme. Comparison of the prediction with actual experimental measurements by Simpson's formula showed good agreement for several different sized specimen.

The effect of specimen thickness and notch's depth and the validity of J-integral analysis were studied on the fracture behavior of concrete. Through the 3-point bending test, the stress-deformation curves were experimentally measured. Concrete fracture toughness is calculated from stress-displacement curves. Concrete fracture toughness decreases when notch's depth is longer. So, Gf is less sensitive than JIc and Gf is more useful factor as concrete fracture toughness parameter. The values of J-integral and fracture energy increase when the breadth of concrete specimen get longer from 75mm to 150mm. Therefore, the breadth effect of specimen has to be considered in determining the concrete fracture toughness.

In this paper, an investigation was performed on the dynamic interlaminar fracture toughness of CFRP(carbon fiber reinforcement plastics). Specimens used in this experiment are CF/EPOXY laminated plates. In this experiments, Split Hopkinson s Bar test was applied to dynamic and notched flexure test. The mode II fracture toughness of each unidirectional CFRP was estimated by the analyzed deflection of the specimen and J-integral with the measured impulsive load and reactions at the supported points. As an experimental result, the vibration amplitude of 〔$0_{10}F_4/0_{10}$〕laminates appear more than that of 〔0_{10}/F_2/0_{10}$〕laminates for the J-integral and displacement velocity at a measuring point. Also, it is thought that the dynamic fracture toughness of two kind specimen with the increase of displacement velocity becomes great at a measuring point with in range of measurement.
This study investigates the change of the temperature and mechanical properties of the braking disk for the railway vehicle. The average temperature is measured about $100^{\circ}C$ and the maximum temperature is measured over $200^{\circ}C$ by non-contact sensor from Seoul to Chun-an. As a result of measuring, we determine the temperature of test(tensile and J-integral) at $20^{\circ}C,\;100^{\circ}C,\;200^{\circ}C$ and $300^{\circ}C$. In the test, the material values are decreased by the increasing of the temperature. But ratio of decreasing is the largest at $200^{\circ}C$, the tensile test value is decreased about $10\%$ and the J-integral test value is decreased $30\%$. The mechanical properties of this material are mostly changed at $200^{\circ}C$.

Rubber is used extensively in many industries because of its large reversible elastic deformation, excellent damping and energy absorption characteristics, and wide availability. Therefore it becomes very important to evaluate fracture characteristics of rubber. Tearing energy and J-integral have been used as fracture parameters of rubber. The J-integral values for pure shear and single edge specimen are calculated by finite element analysis and compare with theoretical values. Finite element analysis is performed by ABAQUS.

The boundary element method was used for studying singularities of an interface crack with contact zones. The iterative procedure is applied to estimate the contact zone size. Because the contact zone size was extremely small in a tension field, a large number of Gaussian points were used for numerical integration of the Kernels. Stress extrapolation method and J-integral were used ofr determining stress intensity factors. When the interface crack was assumed to have opened tips, oscillatory singularities appear near the tips of the interface crack. But the interface crack with contact zone which Comninou suggested had no oscillatory behavior. The contact zone size under shear loading was much larger than that under tensile. The stress intensity factors computed by stress extrapolation method were close to those of Comninou's solution. And the stress intensity factor evaluated by J-integral was similar to that by stress extrapolation method.
The present paper deals with a theoretical study of delamination fracture in the Crack Lap Shear (CLS) functionally graded beam configuration. The basic purpose is to analyze the fracture with taking into account the material non-linearity. The mechanical behavior of CLS was described by using a non-linear stress-strain relation. It was assumed that the material is functionally graded along the beam height. The fracture was analyzed by applying the J-integral approach. The curvature and neutral axis coordinate of CLS beam were derived in order to solve analytically the J-integral. The non-linear solution of J-integral obtained was verified by analyzing the strain energy release rate with considering material non-linearity. The effects of material gradient, crack location along the beam height and material non-linearity on fracture behavior were evaluated. The J-integral non-linear solution derived is very suitable for parametric studies of longitudinal fracture in the CLS beam. The results obtained can be used to optimize the functionally graded beam structure with respect to the fracture performance. The analytical approach developed in the present paper contributes for the understanding of delamination fracture in functionally graded beams exhibiting material non-linearity.

As the speed of the paper machine and printing press increases, the dependency of the production efficiency upon the frequency of web break increases. It is believed that flaw or crack that presents in paper is one of the most important for web break. Runnability of papers on the paper machine could be evaluated by measuring fracture toughness. In this paper the effect kof beating and pressing on the runnability was investigated using handsheets made from softwood bleached kraft pulp beaten to different freeness. Pressing pressure was also varied to obtain different levels of sheet consolidation. Density, tensile strength, and J-integral of the handsheets were evaluated. For measuring J-integral either a single specimen method or RPM method was employed. Results showed that the density and tensile strength were improved as beating and pressing increased because of increased interfiber bonding. J-integral increased with beating until the CSF reached 400mL. No significant difference in J-integral, however, was observed afterward with the increase of beating. And it appeared to be due to acceleration of the stress concentration around the crack that exists on the fiber wall of the sheet when cracks exists.

An energy based crack growth model is developed in this study to simulate the propagation of top-down cracking in asphalt pavements. A viscoelastic fracture mechanics approach, generalized J integral, is employed to model the crack growth of asphalt concrete. Laboratory fatigue crack propagation tests for three different asphalt mixtures are performed at various load levels, frequencies and temperatures. Disk-shaped specimens with a proper loading fixture and crack growth monitoring system are selected for the tests. It is observed from the tests that the crack propagation model based on the generalized J integral is independent of load levels and frequencies, while the traditional Paris' law model based on stress intensity factor is dependent of loading frequencies. However, both models are unable to take care of the temperature dependence of the mixtures. The fatigue crack propagation model proposed in this study has a good agreement between experimental and predicted crack growth lives, which implies that the energy based J integral could be a better parameter to describe fatigue crack propagation of viscoelastic materials such as asphalt mixtures.
Adhesive bonding has seen rapid development in recent years, with emphasis to composite patch repairing processes of geometric defects in aeronautical structures. However, its use is still limited given its low resistance to climatic conditions and requirement of specialized labor to avoid fabrication induced defects, such as air bubbles, cracks, and cavities. This work aims to numerically analyze, by the finite element method, the failure behavior of a damaged plate, in the form of a bonding defect, and repaired by an adhesively bonded composite patch. The position and size of the defect were studied. The results of the numerical analysis clearly showed that the position of the defect in the adhesive layer has a large effect on the value of J-Integral. The reduction in the value of J-Integral is also related to the composite stacking sequence which, according to the mechanical properties of the ply, provides better load transfer from the plate to the repair piece through the adhesive. In addition, the increase in the applied load significantly affects the value of the J-Integral at the crack tip in the presence of a bonding defect, even for small dimensions, by reducing the load transfer.
