  • This study investigates the effects of isothermal holding temperature and time on the microstructure, hardness and Charpy impact properties of medium-carbon bainitic steel specimens. Medium-carbon steel specimens with different bainitic microstructures are fabricated by varying the isothermal conditions and their microstructures are characterized using OM, SEM and EBSD analysis. Hardness and Charpy impact tests are also performed to examine the correlation of microstructure and mechanical properties. The microstructural analysis results reveal that granular bainite, bainitic ferrite, lath martensite and retained austenite form differently in the specimens. The volume fraction of granular bainite and bainitic ferrite increases as the isothermal holding temperature increases, which decreases the hardness of specimens isothermally heat-treated at $300^{\circ}C$ or higher. The specimens isothermally heat-treated at $250^{\circ}C$ exhibit the highest hardness due to the formation of lath martensite, irrespective of isothermal holding time. The Charpy impact test results indicate that increasing isothermal holding time improves the impact toughness because of the increase in volume fraction of granular bainite and bainitic ferrite, which have a relatively soft microstructure compared to lath martensite for specimens isothermally heat-treated at $250^{\circ}C$ and $300^{\circ}C$.

  • The structural changes occurring in the isothermal crystallization processes of polyethylene (PE), poly-oxymethylene (POM), and vinylidene fluoridetrifluoroethylene (VDFTrFE) copolymer have been reviewed on the basis of our recent experimental data collected by the time-resolved measurements of synchrotron-sourced wide-angle (WAXS) and small-angle X-ray scatterings (SAXS) and infrared spectra. The temperature jump from the melt to a crystallization temperature could be measured at a cooling rate of 600-1,000 $^{\circ}C$/min, during which we collected the WAXS, SAXS, and infrared spectral data successfully at time intervals of ca. 10 sec. In the case of PE, the infrared spectral data clarified the generation of chain segments of partially disordered trans conformations immediately after the jump. These segments then became transformed into more-regular all-trans-zigzag forms, followed by the formation of an orthorhombic crystal lattice. At this stage, the generation of a stacked lamella structure having an 800-${\AA}$-long period was detected in the SAXS data. This structure was found to transfer successively to a more densely packed lamella structure having a 400-${\AA}$-long period as a result of the secondary crystallization of the amorphous region in-between the original lamellae. As for POM, the formation process of a stacked lamella structure was essentially the same as that mentioned above for PE, as evidenced from the analysis of SAXS and WAXS data. The observation of morphology-sensitive infrared bands revealed the evolution of fully extended helical chains after the generation of lamella having folded chain structures. We speculate that these extended chains exist as taut tie chains passing continuously through the neighboring lamellae. In the isothermal crystallization of VDFTrFE copolymer from the melt, a paraelectric high-temperature phase was detected at first and then it transferred into the ferroelectric low-temperature phase at a later stage. By analyzing the reflection profile of the WAXS data, the structural ordering in the high-temperature phase and the ferroelectric phase transition to the low-temperature phase of the multi-domain structure were traced successfully.

  • The present paper is concerned with non-isothermal spherical Couette flow of Oldroyd-B fluid in the annular region between two concentric spheres. The inner sphere rotates with a uniform angular velocity while the outer sphere is kept at rest. Moreover, the two spherical boundaries are maintained at fixed temperature values. Hence, the fluid is effect by two heat sources; namely, the viscous heating and the temperature gradient between the two spheres. The viscoelasticity of the fluid is assumed to dominate the inertia such that the latter can be neglected. An approximate analytical solution of the energy and momentum equations is obtained through the expansion of the dynamical fields in power series of Nahme number. The analysis show that, the temperature variation due to the external source appears in the zero order solution and its effect extends to the fluid velocity distribution up to present second order. Viscous heating contributes in the first and second order solutions. In contrast to isothermal case, a first order axial velocity and a second order stream function fields has been appeared. Moreover, at higher orders the temperature distribution depends on the gap width between the two spheres. Finally, there exist a thermal distribution of positive and negative values depend on their positions in the domain region between the two spheres.

  • The 3-dimensional finite element program is developed to analyze the non-isothermal forming processes of aluminum-alloy sheet metals. Bishop's method is introduced to solve the heat balance and force equilibrium equations. Also, Barlat's non-quadratic anisotropic yield function depicts the planar anisotropy of the aluminum-alloy sheet. To find an appropriate constitutive equation, four different forms are reviewed. For the verification of the reliability of the developed program, the computational try-outs of the non-isothermal cylindrical cupping processes of AL5052-H32 and Al1050-H16 are carried out. As results, the constitutive equation relating to strain and strain-rate, in which the constants are represented by the 5th-degree polynomials of temperature, is in good agreement with measurement. The computational try-outs can predict optimal forming conditions in non-isothermal forming processes.

  • Drawing process of the high carbon steel wire with high speed is usually performed at room temperature using multi pass. Tn the multi pass drawing, temperature rise affects the mechanical properties of the final product. The excessive temperature rise during the deformation promotes the occurrence of delamination, and deteriorates the torsion property and durability of wire. This paper investigates the occurrence of delamination in the wire through the torsion test and the evaluation of wire temperature. The excessive wire temperature ieads to the occurrence of delamination. Based on the calculation of the wire temperature, a new pass schedule, that can prevent the delamination due to the excessive wire temperature rise, is designed through the isothermal pass schedule.

  • The characteristics and good corrosion resistance at room and elevated temperatures led to increasing application of Ti-alloys such as aircraft, jet engine, turbine wheels. In forging of Ti-alloy at high temperature, die chilling and die speed should be carefully controlled because the flow stress of Ti-alloy is sensitive to temperature, strain and strain-rate. In this study, the forging of turbine disk was numerically simulated by the finite element method for hot-die forging process and isothermal forging process, respectively. The effects of the temperature changes, the die speed and the friction factor were examined. Also, local variation of process parameters, such as temperature, strain and strain-rate were traced during the simulation. It was shown that the isothermal forging with low friction condition produced defect-free disk under low forging load. Consequently, the simulational information will help industrial workers develope the forging of Ti-alloys including 'preform design' and 'processing condition design'. It is also expected that the simulation method can be used in CAE of near net-shape forging.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the influence of variations in the temperature and time of isothermal heat treatment, applied stresses and prestrain on the isothermal transformation behavior of ${\gamma}$ and ${\sigma}$ phases and mechanical properties of 25Cr-7Ni-3Mo duplex stainless steel. The precipitation of ${\gamma}$ and ${\sigma}$ phases through isothermal heat treatment showed the type curves with a certain incubation period, the curve migrated to in a short period of time and the amount of precipitation increased with decreasing isothermal heat treatment temperature. Under the state of isothermal transformation, the precipitation of ${\gamma}$ and ${\sigma}$ phases was stimulated by applied stress, with increasing applied stress, the curves migrated to in a short period of time and also observed that the application of stress has a greater influence on the amount of ${\sigma}$ precipitation than that of ${\gamma}$ precipitation. The precipitation of ${\gamma}$ and ${\sigma}$ phases was stimulated by cold and warm rolling before isothermal heat treatment and precipitation of ${\gamma}$ and ${\sigma}$ phases has a greater influence on the warm rolling than cold rolling. The tensile strength and hardness increased with increasing cold and warm rooling reduction ratio.

  • This study has been carried out to investigate the non-isothermal behaviors and kinetic parameter of calcium carbonate by different thermal analysis methods. At the heating rate of $10^{\circ}C$/min, the onset calcination temperature, the peak and final temperatures of calcium carbonate were $612^{\circ}C$, $748^{\circ}C$, and $890^{\circ}C$ respectively. As the heating rate of the calcium carbonate increased from $5^{\circ}C$/min to $20^{\circ}C$/min, the peak temperature increased from $719^{\circ}C$ to $782^{\circ}C$. The activation energies of the calcium carbonate calculated by the methods of Kissinger and Freeman-Carroll were 40.15 kcal/mol and 43.47 kcal/mol, respectively.
