  • In this study the experiments on the static adsorption of benzene were carried out using activated carbon made from sewage sludge. The experiment was performed at 303.15 K, 318.15 K and 333.15 K under the pressure up to 7.999kPa. Isothermal adsorption curves were obtained using Langmuir isotherm, Freundlich isotherm and Toth isotherm for comparison. Based on fitting the adsorption quantity of Benzene (q), the isothermal adsorption curves obtained from Langmuir isotherm and Toth isotherm showed the higher accuracy. Although there was little difference in accuracy between result from Langmuir isotherm and that from Toth isotherm, the adsorption quantity of Benzene (q) was expressed in terms of Langmuir isotherm because less parameters were required for Langmuir isotherm than for Toth isotherm. Moreover SEM images of the activated carbon from sewage sludge and the commercial activated carbon were taken to observe the pore size development. The results showed that the perforation development of the commercial activated carbon (DARCO A.C., SPG-100 A.C.) was better than that of activated carbon from sewage sludge. Adsorption quantity of benzene on commercial activated carbon was confirmed to be higher than that on activated carbon from sewage sludge. However the maximum adsorption quantity of benzene on activated carbon from sewage sludge was close to that on SGP-100 A.C. at 303.15K. Therefore, we may conclude that it is feasible to commercialize the process to manufacturing activated carbon from sewage sludge.

  • This study was carried out as a basic experiment for development of adsorption process in which benzene and toluene was adsorbed on activated carbon. In the static adsorption experiment, Adsorption character of benzene and toluene was studied by change of temperature and pressure. Activated carbon 12~20mesh and activated carbon 20~40mesh was used as adsorbents, Benzene, toluene and nitrogen as adsorbates. Experimental data were obtained to fitted to Langmuir isotherm and dependence was acquired. Parameters of adsorption heat and adsorption constant was obtained. Static adsorption experiment for binary mixtures confirmed that Langmuir isotherm parameters could be applicable to Extended Langmuir isotherm. Experimental technique used in this study only requires pressure measurement and this technique is different from the conventional method which measures gas mole compositions before adsorption and after adsorption. The dynamic adsorption experiment was carried out and the experimental results was compared with the computer simulation results. In this study, basic data was acquired to decide adsorption conditions in the process.

  • Biosorbents of nonliving, dried marine brown algae Undaria pinnatifida, Hizikia fusiformis, and Sargassum fulvellum were investigated for their lead biosorption performances. As the amount of biosorbent added was increased, the lead removal by biosorbent materials increased but the lead biosorption capacities decreased. However the lead biosorption capacity by the biosorbent materials increased with increasing initial lead concentration and pH in the range of $C_o\;10\~500\;mg/L$. Among the biosorbent materials used in this study, the lead biosorption capacity in the solutions with no pH adjustment decreased in the following sequence: U. pinnatifida > H. fusiformis > S. fulvellum. Equilibrium parameters based on Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm were determined. It was found that the lead biosorption by biosorbent materials were expressed by the Langmuir isotherm better than the Freundlich isotherm.

  • Over the past few decades, a considerable number of studies on the durability of concrete have been carried out extensively. A lot of improvements have been achieved especially in modeling of ionic flows. However, the majority of these researches have not dealt with the chloride binding isotherm based on the mechanism, although chloride binding capacity can significantly impact on the total service life of concrete under marine environment. The purpose of this study is to develop the model of chloride binding isotherm based on the individual mechanism. It is well known that chlorides ions in concrete can be present; free chlorides dissolved in the pore solution, chemical bound chlorides reacted with the hydration compounds of cement, and physical bound attracted to the surface of C-S-H grains. First, sub-model for water soluble chloride content is suggested as a function of pore solution and degree of saturation. Second, chemical model is suggested separately to estimate the response of binding capacity due to C-S-H and Friedel's salt. Finally, physical bound chloride content is estimated to consider a surface area of C-S-H nano-grains and the distance limited by the Van der Waals force. The new model of chloride binding isotherm suggested in this study is based on their intrinsic binding mechanisms and hydration reaction of concrete. Accordingly, it is possible to characterize chloride binding isotherm at the arbitrary stage of hydration time and arbitrary location from the surface of concrete. Comparative study with experimental data of published literature is accomplished to validity this model.

  • The simple Langmuir isotherm is frequently employed to describe the equilibrium behavior of protein adsorption on a wide variety of adsorbents. The two adjustable parameters of the Langmuir isotherm - the saturation capacity, or $q_m$, and the dissociation constant, $K_d$ - are usually estimated by fitting the isotherm equation to the equilibrium data acquired from batch equilibration experiments. In this study, we have evaluated the possibility of estimating $q_m$ and $K_d$ for the adsorption of bovine serum albumin to a cation exchanger using batch kinetic data. A rate model predicated on the kinetic form of the Langmuir isotherm, with three adjustable parameters ($q_m,\;K_d$, and a rate constant), was fitted to a single kinetic profile. The value of $q_m$ determined as the result of this approach was quantitatively consistent with the $q_m$ value derived from the traditional batch equilibrium data. However, the $K_d$ value could not be retrieved from the kinetic profile, as the model fit proved insensitive to this parameter. Sensitivity analysis provided significant insight into the identifiability of the three model parameters.

  • In this study, experiments on the static adsorption of benzene were carried out using activated carbon made from Pinus koraiensis which is normally discarded waste timber in South Korea. The experiment were performed at 303.15 K, 318.15 K and 333.15 K under the pressure up to 7.999 kPa. • Lead sorption performances by biomass of nonliving, dried marine brown algae Undaria phnaunda, Hlzikia hsyormls. and Sugassum fulvellum used as biosorbent materials were investigated. As the amount of biosorbent materials added was increased, the lead removal by biosorbent materials Increased but the lead biosorption capacities decreased. However, with increasing Initial lead concentration the lead biosorption capacities by the biosorbent materials Increased but lead removal efficiencies decreased. In the range of Initial lead concentration(Co) 10-500 mg/L the lead biosorption capacities and removal efficiencies by the biosorbent materials Increased with increasing pH. Among the biosorbent materials used in this study, the lead biosorption capacities decreased in the following sequence: U. plilnaunda > H. fusiformis > S. fulvellum. The lead biosorption by biosorbent materials were expressed by the Langmuir Isotherm better than the Freundlich Isotherm. The biosorption rate could be expressed by the first order reaction rate equation for initial lead concentration like that rad : 0.288Co for U. phanda, rad = 0.255Co for H. fusiformis, and rad : 0.161Co for S. fulvellum. Key words : Lead, biosorption, biosorbent, Undaria pinnatinda, Hiztkia fusiformis, Sargassum fulvellum, Langmuir isotherm, Freundlich isotherm, biosorption rate.

  • A simple mathematical model for predicting fixed bed adsorption dynamics is described. The model is characterized by a linear adsorption isotherm and a linear driving force expression for mass transfer. Its analytic solution can be approximated with an algebraic equation in closed form which is easily evaluated by spreadsheet computation. To demonstrate one application of the fixed bed model, a previously published adsorption system is used as a case study in this work. The adsorption system examined here describes chromium breakthrough in a fixed bed adsorber packed with imidazole functionalized adsorbent particles and is characterized by a nonlinear adsorption isotherm. However, the equilibrium behavior of the fixed bed adsorber is in essence governed by a linear adsorption isotherm due to the use of a low influent chromium concentration. It is shown that chromium breakthrough is predicted reasonably well by the fixed bed model. The model's parameters can be easily extracted from independent batch experiments. The proposed modeling approach is very simple and rapid, and only Excel is used for computation.

  • To fit the desorption isotherm and adsorption isotherm for Pangola grass, the modified Henderson model, Chung-Pfost model, modified Halsey model, and modified Oswin model were used to fit the experimental EMC /ERH data. A step-by -step ERH measuring technique was used in this study. The ERH data were collected at three temperature levels of 5 $^{\circ}C$, $25^{\circ}C$ and 5$0^{\circ}C$ for Pangola grass whole plant, stem , and foliage. The modified Halsey model has the best fit for both desorption isotherm and adsorption isotherm of Pangola grass whole plant as compared with other models.

  • This study proposed adsorption of Pb(II) ions from aqueous solution using activated carbon prepared from areca catechu shell (ACS AC) using Timphan Method. The effects of independent variables on adsorption kinetic and isotherm have been investigated by conducting experiments in batch mode at neutral pH. The structural characterization of adsorbent was done by FT-IR and SEM analysis. The Pb(II) adsorption was correlated very well with the pseudo second-order kinetic (PSOKM) and Langmuir isotherm models (LIM). Increasing NaOH mass for activation and adsorption temperature increased weakly all the parameters of adsorption kinetic and isotherm. The Pb(II) ions adsorption capacity of the ACS AC at 27 and $45^{\circ}C$ was 50.51 and 55.25 mg/g, respectively. Thermodynamic parameters were determined, and the results confirmed the Pb(II) ions adsorption should be endothermic and spontaneous process, and both physical and chemical adsorption should be taken place.
