An experimental study that included detailed observation of four 305-mm-diameter drilled shafts, one reference shaft of standard design and three test shafts with isolation tubes to mitigate skin friction in the vadose zone of a clay soil profile, is described. The shafts were loaded only by naturally expanding and contraction soil over a period of 17 months. The soil at the test site was instrumented to track suction and elevation changes. Maximum ground surface movements exceeding 40 mm were observed. Heave movements of less than 1.5 mm were observed in the test shafts with isolation tubes, while movements of 5 mm were observed in the reference shaft. Unit side shear loads in the shafts protected by the isolation tubes were minimal compared to those measured in the reference shaft. This indicates that the isolation tubes were very effective.

Purpose: The purposes of the study were to examine the knowledge and practice about Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) isolation precaution, and to explore influencing factors of the isolation practice among hospital nurses. Methods: A total of 182 nurses were recruited from four general hospitals where MERS patients had been treated. The knowledge and practice of MERS isolation precaution were measured by the scales developed based on the CDC guidelines. The collected data were analyzed by SPSS/WIN 22 with descriptive statistics, T-test, One-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients, and hierachical multiple regression analysis. Results: The nurses were 30 years old in average, and half of them had less than 5 years of clinical experience. and knowledge on droplet precautions (${\beta}=.171$, p=.019) were the significant predictors, explaining 19.6% of variance in the MERS isolation guideline practice. Clinical experience (${\beta}=.225$, p=.002), working at infection unit (${\beta}=-.203$, p=.011). Conclusion: The knowledge on droplet precaution and general knowledge on MERS were the important modifiable factor to improve the MERS isolation guideline practice among hospital nurses, even after adjusting clinical experience and demographic variables. It is necessary to develop an efficient education program on specific guidelines for prevention and management of infection by improving the knowledge on infectious disease such as MERS as well as droplet precaution which are modifiable factors.
In 2011, an earthquake and subsequent tsunami hit the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, causing simultaneous accidents in several reactors. This accident shows us that if there are several reactors on site, the seismic risk to multiple units is important to consider, in addition to that to single units in isolation. When a seismic event occurs, a seismic-failure correlation exists between the nuclear power plant's structures, systems, and components (SSCs) due to their seismic-response and seismic-capacity correlations. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate the multi-unit seismic risk by considering the SSCs' seismic-failure-correlation effect. In this study, a methodology is proposed to obtain the seismic-response-correlation coefficient between SSCs to calculate the risk to multi-unit facilities. This coefficient is calculated from a probabilistic multi-unit seismic-response analysis. The seismic-response and seismic-failure-correlation coefficients of the emergency diesel generators installed within the units are successfully derived via the proposed method. In addition, the distribution of the seismic-response-correlation coefficient was observed as a function of the distance between SSCs of various dynamic characteristics. It is demonstrated that the proposed methodology can reasonably derive the seismic-response-correlation coefficient between SSCs, which is the input data for multi-unit seismic probabilistic safety assessment.

Purpose: To investigate the levels of uncertainty and anxiety at admission and discharge to the isolation unit for patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). Method: The data were collected from 60 patients who were admitted to the department of HSCT. Uncertainty and anxiety were assessed using the Mishel Uncertainty in Illness Scale (MUIS) and Anxiety Inventory (STAI). Collected data were analyzed using the SAS program. Results: The mean score for anxiety at admission was 2.20, and at discharge 2.10. The mean score for uncertainty at admission was 2.19, and at discharge 2.07. The anxiety at admission the group with physical discomfort was higher than that of group without physical discomfort. A positive relationship was found between anxiety and uncertainty at admission and at discharge. The major variables were expectation for cure and physical discomfort, explaining 25.87% of the anxiety at admission. The major variable was expectation for cure, explaining 20.94% of the uncertainty at admission. Conclusion: Front the above results, it can be concluded that support and consideration are required to reduce anxiety of the inpatient in single room.

The Emergency Diesel Generator (EDG) is a very important equipment for the safety of a Nuclear Power Plant (NPP). In this study, the operating vibration of three kinds of EDG systems was measured. The target EDG systems are Yonggwang 5 unit and Ulchin 2 and 3 units. The Yonggwang 5 and Ulchin 3 unit EDG systems are the same type but the foundation systems are different. One is an anchor bolt type and the other is a spring and viscous-damper type. The purpose of these measurements is for a verification of the vibration isolation effect depending on the foundation system. As a result, It can be said that the spring and viscous damper system of the EDG performed better for the vibration isolation than that of anchor bolt type.

RPC (Remote Procedure Call)-based Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) virtualization technology is one of the technologies for sharing GPUs with multiple user virtual machines. However, in a cloud environment, unlike CPU or memory, general GPUs do not provide a resource isolation technology that can limit the resource usage of virtual machines. In particular, in an RPC-based virtualization environment, since GPU tasks executed in each virtual machine are performed in the form of multi-process, the lack of resource isolation technology causes performance degradation due to resource competition. In addition, the GPU memory competition accelerates the performance degradation as the resource demand of the virtual machines increases, and the fairness decreases because it cannot guarantee equal performance between virtual machines. This paper, in the RPC-based GPU virtualization environment, analyzes the performance degradation problem caused by resource contention when the GPU memory requirement of virtual machines exceeds the available GPU memory capacity and proposes a GPU memory management technique to solve this problem. Also, experiments show that the GPU memory management technique proposed in this paper can improve the performance of GPGPU tasks.

This study was undertaken to screen a high xylanase and mannanase producing microbes. In the first experiment, screening was undertaken against 50 samples of microorganisms having xylanase and mannanase activities from soil and fallen leaves. The screening process has focused on picking out fungi having high xylanase and mannanase activities under the solid-state fermentation. The xylanase and mannanase activities of 6 screened microbes were 0.9~1.6 unit/mL and 0.2~0.4 unit/mL, respectively, under the submerged fermentation condition. However, under the solid-state fermentation, xylanase and mannanase activities were 103.7~220.0 unit/g and 20.1~40.3 unit/g, respectively. Finally one microbe (E-3) was selected and its xylanase and mannanase activities were 197.3 unit/g and 39.9 unit/g, respectively. The morphological and molecular biological classification of E-3 showed 99% homology with the Aspergillus niger.
The World Health Organization (WHO) announced the emergence of a novel influenza on April 24, 2009, and they declared pandemic on June 11. In Korea, the proportion of influenza-like illness and the consumption of antiviral agents peaked in early November. The government established the Central Headquarters for Influenza Control and operated the emergency response system. In the quarantine stations, we checked the body temperature and collected quarantine questionnaires from all the arrivals from infected countries. We also isolated the confirmed cases in the national isolation hospitals. However, as the community outbreaks were reported, we changed strategy from containment to mitigation. We changed the antiviral agent prescription guideline so that doctors could prescribe antiviral agents to all patients with acute febrile respiratory illness, without a laboratory diagnosis. Also the 470 designated hospitals were activated to enhance the efficacy of treatment. We vaccinated about 12 million people and manage the adverse event following the immunization management system. In 2010, we will establish additional national isolation wards and support hospitals to establish fever clinics and isolation intensive care unit (ICU) beds. We will also make a computer program for managing the national isolation hospitals and designated hospitals. We will establish isolation rooms and expand the laboratory in quarantine stations and we will construct a bio-safety level 3 laboratory in each province. In addition, we plan to construct a bio-safety level 4 laboratory at a new Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) facilities in Ossong.

Purpose: During the COVID-19 pandemic, there have been many cases of converting regular hospital wards into temporary negative pressure isolation wards. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the minimum airflow differences that satisfies the pressure difference criteria(-2.5 Pa) according to airtightness of switching type wards, in preparation for utilization of aging regular wards as negative pressure isolation wards. Methods: Visual inspection and field measurements were conducted using blower door to evaluate airtightness of 5 hospital wards. CONTAM simulation was used to assess the airflow differences when pressure difference between the corridor and wards met the criteria at various levels of airtightness. Results: The ACH50 of evaluated wards ranged from 19.3 to 50.1 h-1 with an average of 37.0 h-1, indicating more than four times leakier than other building types. The minimum airflow differences increased as the airtightness of the wards decreased and the size of the wards increased. Implications: When operating rapidly converted negative pressure isolation wards, understanding airtightness is crucial for determining the minimum airflow differences to maintain the pressure differences. The analysis of this study suggests that improving the airtightness of aging rooms is essential and the minimum airflow differences should be suggested considering both the airtightness and size of rooms.
