In earthquake situations, broadcasting and communication services are directly linked to rapid on-site rescue and effective restoration works. Recently, a variety of base isolation devices are widely introduced on building floors to avoid critical seismic damages of telecommunication facilities. However, in buildings with long fundamental periods, those devices may have undesirable amplification of seismic responses due to resonance effect between the building floors and base isolation devices. This study performs the seismic safety evaluation of two types of base isolation devices deployed for telecommunication facilities in mid- and high-rise buildings through numerical and experimental approaches. It is found that mid- and high-rise buildings can have low-frequency dynamic responses at the top floor when being subjected to design basis earthquake loading. Furthermore, bi-directional shake table testing demonstrated that the selected base isolation devices can exhibit unstable dynamic behaviors under such low-frequency excitations of the floor.
In this paper, mechanical properties of periodic foundation made of concrete and rubber are investigated by a parametric study using the finite element method (FEM). Periodic foundation is a special type of seismic isolation foundation used in civil engineering, which is inspired by the meso-scale structure of phononic crystals in solid-state physics. This type of foundation is capable of reducing the seismic wave propagating though the foundation, therefore providing additional protection for the structures. In the FEM analysis, layered periodic foundation is frequently modelled due to its simplicity in numerical modeling. However, the isolation effect of periodic foundation on nuclear power plant has not been fully discussed to the best knowledge of authors. In this work, we construct four numerical models of nuclear power plant with different foundations to investigate the seismic isolation effects of periodic foundations. The results show that the layered periodic foundation can increase the natural period of the nuclear power plant like traditional base isolation systems, which is beneficial to the structures. In addition, the seismic response of the nuclear power plant can also be effectively reduced in both vertical and horizontal directions when the frequencies of the incident waves fall into some specific frequency bandgaps of the periodic foundation. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the layered periodic foundation can reduce the amplitude of the floor response spectrum, which plays an important role in the protection of the equipment.
The factors affecting the isolation and culture of the protoplast of embryogenic callus, derived from immature ovule in Citrus junos, were examined. An incubation time in enzyme solution of 16 hrs was preferable for protoplast isolation. Efficient protoplast yields were obtained from the treatment of equal concentration of 0.7 M $\textrm{BH}_{3}$ to the enzyme solution containing 1.0% cellulase, 1.0% macerozyme and 0.2% pectolyase. Protoplast cultured in MT medium with 0.1 mg/L 2,4-D showed vigorous division and some of them formed callus. Induced callus was subcultured on solid MT medium but the callus showed very slow growth. The above results show the possibility to culture from protoplast fusion in Citrus genera.
Recent severe earthquakes in and around the vital public places worldwide indicate the severe vulnerability of ground excitation to be assailed. Reducing the effect of seismic lateral load in structural design is an important conception. Essentially, seismic isolation is required to shield the superstructure in such a way that the building superstructure would not move when the ground is shaking. This study explores the effectiveness, design, and practical feasibility of base isolation systems to reduce seismic demands on buildings of varying elevations. Thus, static and dynamic analyses were conducted based on site-specific bi-directional earthquakes for base-isolated as well as fixed-based buildings. Remarkably, it was discovered that isolators used in low-rise to high-rise structures tend to significantly decrease the structural responses of seismic prone buildings. The higher allowable horizontal displacement induces structural flexibility and ensure good structural health of the building stories. Reinforcement from vertical and horizontal members can be reduced in significant amounts for BI buildings. Thus, although incorporating base isolators increases the initial outlay, it considerably diminishes the total structural cost.
The base-isolation of building, as appeared in many studies, has shown remarkable performance in seismic response attenuation of the internal system as well as the building structure itself. But for the case that the internal system is submerged and hence subject to a considerable hydrodynamic effect, the seismic response of the system due to the base-isolation of building can be greater than the case that they are in air. This paper presents the dynamic analysis of a submerged internal system on base-isolated building to show such an example. The results show that an additional treatment is required to reduce the adverse effects on the seismic response of such a system when the building is base-isolated, and that the system response can be reduced to some extent by an appropriate control of fluid gap between the system and the building structure.

In a previous paper, ambient vibration tests were conducted on a cable stayed bridge with resilient-friction base isolation systems (R-FBI) to extract the dynamic characteristics of the bridge and compare the results with a seismic analysis model. In this paper, a nonlinear seismic analysis model was established for analysis of the bridge to compare the difference in seismic responses between nonlinear time history analysis and multi-mode spectral analysis methods in the seismic design phase of cable supported bridges. Through these studies, it was confirmed that the seismic design procedures of the "Korean Highway Bridge Design Code (Limit State Design) for Cable Supported Bridges" is not suitable for cable supported bridges installed with R-FBI. Therefore, to reflect the actual dynamic characteristics of the R-FBI installed on cable-supported bridges, an improved seismic design procedure is proposed that applies the seismic analysis method differently depending on the seismic isolation effect of the R-FBI for each seismic performance level.
For the development of technique for isolation of naked barley starch from Youngsan variety, optimum conditions of the isolation process were investigated. The effect of blending was examined and the results showed that 29.7% starch yield was obtained by 6 times of blending. After the blending, the barley starch contained 3.2% protein, 0.7% fat, 0.4% fiber, 0.4% ash and 2.8% ${eta}$-glucan. The opitmum conditions of ${eta}$-glucanase treatment were studied and the results showed that the amount of ${eta}$-glucanase and barley flour-water ratio were 60,000 unit and 1/2, the optimum steeping temperature, pH were $45^{\circ}C$ and 6.5, respectively. The effect of alkali treatment which would be supposed to increase the yield and purity of the barley starch was also examined. 76.7% starch content was obtained by 2 hr of alkali treatment. After all the treatment of isolation process, the barley starch finally contained 0.2% protein and 0.1% ${eta}$-glucan.
An Isolation-with-Migration (IM) model is used to estimate extant population sizes, the splitting time of populations split away from their common ancestral populations, and migration rates between the extant populations. An evolutionary model such as IM models is estimated by analyzing DNA sequences sampled from the extant populations in the model. When a true model includes an unsampled 'ghost' population without data, the unsampled population is often ignored from the evolutionary model to infer. In this paper, we conduct a simulation study to investigate the effect of an unsampled population on the estimation of the size of the sampled population. When there exists an unsampled population that shares migrations with the sampled population, the size estimation of the sampled population was biased. However, the size estimation was improved if an evolutionary model, including the unsampled population, was estimated.

In this study, for the evaluation of seismic safety of the isolated Emergency Diesel Generator (EDG) System more quantitatively, the seismic fragility analysis method were proposed. Using the proposed method, seismic fragility analysis performed and a seismic risk of EDG system was present. The fragility analysis performed not for an existing EDG system but also for an isolated EDG system which increases the seismic capacity. At first, numerical models for existing and isolated EDG system were constructed and seismic response analysis performed according to input seismic waves and peak ground accelerations. An uncertainty factors and failure modes of both fixed and isolated EDG system were assumed for fragility analysis. The HCLPF values were evaluated for the compare the improvement effect using the isolation system. As a result, the isolation system can make better the seismic fragility of EDG system, but the failure of isolation system was govern the behavior of whole system.

Purpose: In this study, through the comparison of the pressure fluctuation and air exchange volume in negative isolation room according to the type of the door and door opening/closing speeds, which is one of the main factors causing the cross contamination of the negative pressure isolation room, establishes standard operating procedures to prevent cross contamination in high risk infectious diseases and isolation room design. Methods: In this study, the air flow each of the room is analyzed using ANASYS CFX CODE for flow analysis. In addition, the grid configuration of the door is constructed by applying Immersed Solid Methods. Results: The pressure fluctuation due to the opening and closing of the hinged door was very large when the moment of the hinged door opened and closed. Especially, at the moment when the door is closed, a pressure reversal phenomenon occurs in which the pressure in the isolation room is larger than the pressure in the anteroom. On the other hand, the pressure fluctuation due to the opening and closing of the sliding door appeared only when the door was closed, but the pressure reversal phenomenon not occurred at the moment when the sliding door was closed, unlike the hinged door. As the opening and closing speed of the hinged door increases, the air exchange volume is increased. However, as the opening and closing speed of the sliding door is decreased, the air exchange volume is increased. Implications: According to the results of this study, it can be concluded that the pressure fluctuation due to the opening and closing of the hinged door is greater than the pressure fluctuation due to the opening and closing of the sliding door. In addition, it can be confirmed that the pressure reversal phenomenon, which may cause to reduce the containment effect in negative pressure isolation room, is caused by the closing of the hinged door. Therefore, it is recommended to install a sliding door to maintain a stable differential pressure in the negative isolation room. Also, as the opening and closing speed of the hinged door is slower and the opening and closing speed of the sliding door is faster, the possibility of cross contamination of the room can be reduced. It is therefore necessary to establish standard operating procedures for negative isolation room for door opening and closing speeds.
