  • This paper proposes a novel design for a compact, high-isolation WCDMA indoor repeater antenna. The proposed antenna consists of a patch antenna and metamaterial absorber. The required WCDMA bandwidth is obtained by utilizing the coupling between the main and the parasitic patches. In addition, high isolation is achieved using the metamaterial absorber, which has an absorption of about 98% at 2.1 GHz. Overall, the proposed antenna has a gain of over 7 dBi, a Voltage Standing Wave Ratio (VSWR) of less than 2, more than 85 dB of isolation between the service and donor antennas over the WCDMA band and a total volume of the proposed antenna only $70mm{\times}70mm{\times}43.8mm$.

  • To predict effects of seismic isolation, seismic isolation bearings were applied to the Wolsong reactor building and the analytical study was performed. For this study, the Wolsong reactor building was modeled using lumped masses and beam elements. Design Basis Earthquake with a ground acceleration of 0.2g was applied. And then, the behavior of the isolated structure was compared with that of the unisolated structure. The horizontal response acceleration at the top of the unisolated reactor building was 0.99g, while that of the isolated one was 0.14g(15% damping) and the acceleration response along the height of the structure was constant. The maximum displacement of the unisolated structure was 8.3mm, while that of the isolated structure was 66mm. The application of isolation bearings on the reactor building reduces seismic loads but increases the displacement of the structure on a large scale. Therefore, when using isolation bearings, the reactor building and BOP should be located on a common mat to cover the large displcement.

  • This study evaluates the performance of a coil spring-viscous damper system for the vibration and seismic isolation of an Emergency Diesel Generator (EDG) by measuring its operational vibration and seismic responses. The vibration performance of a coil spring-viscous damper system was evaluated by the vibration measurements for an identical EDG set with different base systems - one with an anchor bolt system and the other with a coil spring-viscous damper system. The seismic performance of the coil spring-viscous damper system was evaluated by seismic tests with a scaled model of a base-isolated EDG on a shaking table. The effects of EDG base isolation on the fragility curve and core damage frequency in a nuclear power plant were also investigated through a case study.

  • A non-linear vibration isolation system which is composed of a non-linear spring and a linear damper was proposed in past research. When the support of the isolation system is excited harmonically, the response component of the isolation system mass at the excitation frequency has been calculated approximately using the harmonic balance method. The response was approximated by a single mode, and the result was compared with a numerical result which is assumed as an accurate one. Next, the response was approximated by two modes, and the result was compared with the former one.

  • Isolation technology has been proven effective in reducing the seismic response of superstructures, where most of the deformation is concentrated in the isolation layer. However, in cases of earthquakes with intensities surpassing the fortification level of the area, or severe near-fault earthquakes, the isolation layer may experience excessive deformation, resulting in damage to the isolation bearings or collisions with the retaining wall or surrounding buildings. In this study, a finite element model using ABAQUS is established and compared with experimental test results to deeply investigate the influence of limit devices on the isolation layer and its response to the superstructure. The findings reveal that a larger limiter stiffness and a smaller reserved gap can achieve a more effective limiting effect. Nevertheless, a smaller reserved gap and a larger limiter stiffness may result in increased response of the superstructure. Therefore, rational selection of the reserved gap and limiter stiffness is crucial to reduce the acceleration response.

  • The base-collector capacitance of an npn bipolar transistor in bipolar or BiCMOS technology has significant influence on the switching performances, and comprises pnjunction component and MOS component. Both components have complicated dependences on the isolation oxide structure, epitaxial doping density, and bias voltage. Analytical/empirical formulas for both components are derived in this paper for a generic isolation structure as a function of epitaxial doping density and bias voltage based on some theoretical understanding and two-dimensional device simulations. These formulas are useful in estimating the effect of device isoation schemes on the switching speed of bipolar transistors.

  • We reported 94 GHz, low conversion loss, and high isolation single balanced active-gate mixer based on 70 nm gate length InGaAs/InAlAs metamorphic high electron mobility transistors (MHEMTs). This mixer showed that the conversion loss and isolation characteristics were 2.5 ${\sim}$ 2.8 dB and under -30 dB, respectively, in the range of 93.65 ${\sim}$ 94.25 GHz. The low conversion loss of the mixer is mainly attributed to the high-performance of the MHEMTs exhibiting a maximum drain current density of 607 mA/mm, a extrinsic transconductance of 1015 mS/mm, a current gain cutoff frequency ($f_t$) of 330 GHz, and a maximum oscillation frequency ($f_{max}$) of 425 GHz. High isolation characteristics are due to hybrid ring coupler which adopted dielectric-supported air-gapped microstrip line (DAML) structure using surface micromachined technology. To our knowledge, these results are the best performance demonstrated from 94 GHz single balanced mixer utilizing GaAs-based HEMTs in terms of conversion loss as well as isolation characteristics.

  • We report low conversion loss and high LO to RF isolation 94 GHz MMIC resistive mixers based on 0.1 ${\mu}m$ InGaAs/InAlAs/GaAs metamorphic HEMT technology. The fabricated resistive mixers applied a one-stage amplifier on RF port of the mixer. By using the one-stage amplifier, we obtained the decrement of conversion loss and the increment of LO to RF isolation. So, we can obtain higher performances than conventional resistive mixers. The modified mixer shows excellent conversion loss of 6.7 dB at a LO power of 10 dBm. We also observed an extremely high isolation characteristic from the MMICs exhibiting the LO-RF isolation of 21 ${\pm}$ 0.5dB in a frequency range of 93.7${\sim}$ 94.3 GHz. The low conversion loss and high LO-RF isolation characteristics of the MMIC modified resistive mixers are mainly attributed to the performance of the MHEMTs exhibiting a maximum transconductance of 654 mS/mm, a current gain cut-off frequency of 173 GHz and a maximum oscillation frequency of 271 GHz.

  • In this study, using a periodical ground structure(PGS) on GaAs monolithic microwave integrated circuit(MMIC), transmission line with a high isolation characteristic was developed for application to compact signal/bias lines of highly integrated MMIC. And the origin of the high isolation characteristic was theoretically investigated. The high isolation characteristic was originated from a resonance between adjacent microstrip lines employing PGS. With only a spacing of $20{\mu}m$, the coupled microstrip line employing PGS showed an isolation value of -47 dB at 60 GHz. The frequency range for high isolation was easily controlled by changing the PGS structure. Above results indicate that microstrip lines employing PGS are very useful for application to compact signal/bias lines of highly integrated MMIC requiring a high isolation characteristics between lines. In addition, equivalent circuit employing closed-form equation for the coupled line with PGS was also extracted.
