PURPOSE: This study examined the changes in the blood fatigue variables caused by isokinetic and isotonic exercise training. METHODS: Ten healthy adult males with at least one year of athletic experience participated. The participants performed the isokinetic circuit exercise program first, followed by an isotonic circuit exercise program. A two-hour break was allowed between the isokinetic circuit exercise program and the isotonic circuit exercise program. The circuit exercise program consisted of four items (Squat, Deadlift, Shoulder press, and Bench press). The blood samples were analyzed for the LDH, CPK, and Cortisol levels. RESULTS: The LDH level in the isokinetic group was significantly different from the isotonic group. In particular, the change in LDH level in the isokinetic group was 33.30% lower than that of the isotonic group. The serum CPK level of the isokinetic group showed a 10.03% lower decrease than the isotonic group, but the difference was not significant. The Cortisol level was relatively unchanged in the isotonic group, but it decreased in the isokinetic group. On the other hand, the Cortisol level did not show a significant difference between the two groups. CONCLUSION: The isokinetic group showed alleviation of the three indices, unlike the isotonic group. Further studies associated with the changes in blood fatigue variables through various exercise programs and exercise intensity will be needed.
The purpose of this study was to find out the effect of muscular strength of quadriceps, hamstring of knee joint to isokintic, isotonic exercise treatment in stroke. Data was collected from 80 stroke from January 10. 1994 to april 10, 1994 in a Chungnam university hospital. The results were as follows; 1. Peak torque was higher isokinetic than isotonic excercise group both in quadriceps and hamstring of knee joint, 6 weeks, 8 weeks 10 weeks showed statistically significant in isokinetic exercise training group. 2. Total work was high isokinetic than isotonic exercise group both in quadricaps and hamstring of knee joint, 10 weeks 12 weeks showed statistically significant in isokinetic exercise training group. 3. Average peak torque and total work was higher isokinetic than isotonic excercise group both in quadriceps and hamstring of knee joint, showed statistically significant in isokinetic exercise training group (p<0.05).(p<0.01). Isokinetic and isotonic exercise treatment were needed for sutable walk training in stroke. But I think that better method was isokinetic exercise treatment in muscular strength and endurance.
Purpose: Unilateral strength training effects on contralateral sides have been demonstrated in previous studies for lower extremity exercise, upper extremity exercise, and unilateral surface electrical stimulation. This study was performed to investigate the effects of unilateral ankle training on muscle strength and the balance of contralateral lower extremity in healthy adults. Methods: Thirty healthy subjects were randomized equally to a training or a control group. Those in the training group received unilateral ankle isokinetic strengthening training of the dominant leg (right side) for 4 weeks. Contralateral single-limb balance, including Anterio-Posterior Stability Index (APSI), Medio-Lateral Stability Index (MLSI) and Overall Stability Index (OSI), was assessed before and after intervention. Results: Comparison of pre- and post-test data revealed significant improvements in ipsi- and contralateral ankle strengths, and significant improvement in contralateral single limb balance. Conclusion: These results have practical implications because they demonstrate that unilateral ankle isokinetic exercise improves ankle muscle strength and balance ability of contralateral lower extremity.

Purpose: The present study investigated the effects of 12-week aquatic exercise training on isokinetic muscle function of the shoulder in adolescents with cerebral palsy. Methods: The study included four male and four female adolescents with cerebral palsy. Isokinetic muscle function was measured at an angular velocity of $60^{\circ}/s$, using Biodex System VI Pro. The peak torques of internal rotation and external rotation were measured before and after training. Aquatic exercise training was performed once a day for 120 min, 4 times a week for 12 weeks. Results: The peak torque of external rotation according to body weight and mean power of internal rotation were significantly higher after training (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Our findings suggest that 12-week aquatic training for adolescents with cerebral palsy can improve isokinetic muscle function of the shoulder. Future studies should analyze the changes in isokinetic muscle function of the shoulder in more detail using various aquatic exercise programs to investigate their effects on individuals with cerebral palsy.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of treadmill aerobic exercise training on isokinetic muscle strength in students with cerebral palsy. The subjects consisted of 9 female students with cerebral palsy between the ages of 10 to 22. The subjects performed treadmill aerobic exercise training with $0\%$ grade by free speed with three times a week for 20 minutes a session and 12 weeks. Concentric peak torque of knee flexors and knee extensors was measured before training and after training at $30^{\circ}/sec$ and $60^{\circ}/sec$ by isokinetic dynamometer. Paired t-test was used to assess changes in variables of isokinetic muscle strength. The results of analysis are as followings. 1) After training, concentric peak torque of the least affected knee flexors(p<.01) and the most affected knee flexors (p<.01) and concentric peak torque of the least affected knee extensors(p<.01) and the most affected knee extensors(p<.01) at $30^{\circ}/sec$ significantly increased. 2) After training, concentric peak torque of the least affected knee flexors(p<.05) and the most affected knee flexors(p<.01) and concentric peak torque of the least affected knee extensors(p<.05) and the most affected knee extensors(p<.01) at $60^{\circ}/sec$ significantly increased. These findings provide evidence that treadmill aerobic exercise training improves isokinetic muscle strength in students with cerebral palsy.
This study was performed to figure out effects of stroke rehabilitation on education using isokinetic exercise on physical function recovery. It is considered isokinetic exercise will playa primary role in muscle strength, ROM of joint, and body balance recovery for stroke rehabilitation and so far can be used as a basic references to increase the health of all people. The study consisted of 42 stroke patient(21 training group, 21 control group) diagnosed as cerebral hemorrhage from Oriental Rehabilitation Department of Kyung Hee University. Upper extremity and lower extremity exercise was performed in the training group using isokinetic ergometer. The recovery of physical function(muscle strength, ROM of joint, body balance) data between the two groups were compared and ana lysed by paired t-test are as followed. 1. Muscle testing record showed increased in the strength of elbow flexion, knee flexion, knee extension, ankle extension of the training group com paired to control group(p < .05). In the measurement of ROM, however other parts of the body motion showed no significant changes, only shoulder extension of the training group was increased(p < .05). 2. Body balance increase was highly significant in all training group compaired to control group(p<001). Based on these findings, stroke rehabilitation education with isokinetic ergometer showed available effects on recovery of physical function rehabilitation program with isokinetic exercise will play a primary role in the recovery of physical function of stroke or brain injury patients as well as to promote the health of all people.
The twenty one individuals with total knee replacement who were admitted to Kang-Dong Hospital for comprehensive physical therapy were studied in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of an isokinetic test program using the Cybex 6000 machine. The subjects were divided into three groups with the isometric exercise group receiving isometric exercise, the isokinetic eccentric exercise group, and isokinetic concentric exercise group receivind isokinetic exercise(eccentric, concentric) to knee flexors and extensors muscles for a six weeks' period using the Cybex 6000. The results are follow: 1. The extensors were increased significantly at all groups after 6 weeks training(p<.05). The flexors were increased significantly at isokinetic eccentric and isokinetic concentric group but no significantly differences at isometric group(p>.05) 2. At the effect of extensors and flexors after 6 weeks training. higher to 30$^{\circ}$ /sec of isokinetic concentric exercise, lower to 120$^{\circ}$ /sec of isometric exercise. 3. The peak torque was more increased significantly in the flexors and extensors of the isokinetic conccentric exercise among three groups. 4. The total work was more increased significantly in the flexors and extensors of the isokinetic conccentric exercise among three groups. 5. The ratio of peak torque to body weight were more increased significantly in the flexors and extensors of the isikinetic conccentric exercise among three groups. 6. The average power was more increased significantly in the flexors and extensors of the isikinetic conccentric exercise among three groups. 7. The average R.O.M in the pre-exercise and post-exercise was not different significantly in all three groups. According to the above results, In the muscle strength recovery for total knee replacement patients, isokinetic concentric exercise group was significantly greater than the isokinetic eccentric and isometric exercise groups after a six weeks training.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a four week unilateral isokinetic exercise program applied to ankle on the one-leg stance balance performance of ipsilateral and contralateral lower-limbs. Methods: Subjects were randomly assigned to either a right ankle training program (n=12) or a control group (n=12). The training group received unilateral ankle isokinetic exercise of the dominant side for 4 weeks, whereas control group did not. Ipsilateral and contralateral one-leg balance were measured before and after intervention using the Biodex Balance System. Results: Improvements of stability scores, such as APSI, MLSI, and OSI, from pre-test to post-test were significantly different greater for the training group when the control. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest unilateral ankle strengthening exercise transfers benefit to the untrained limb by a cross-education effect, and that this type of exercise should be considered to improve one-leg standing balance of trained and untrained lower-limbs.
Eccentric muscle contraction is more effective than concentric and iosmetric muscle contraction in increasing muscle strength. Also, eccentric or concentric-eccentric training has greater effective in neural activation and muscle hypertrophy than concentric training. In some study, eccentric exercises have been shown to reduce pain and improve function on Achilles tendinopathy. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of eccentric isokinetic exercise in a patient with dislocation of the tarsometatarsal joint by traffic accident. After eccentric isokinetic training, peak torque, average work, and average power were increased. Also, the patient was fully weightbearing with a pain free normal gait thus making good recovery.

Objective: This study aims to explore the relationship between isokinetic strength training and the enhancement of physical function in older adults. It also evaluates the effectiveness of isokinetic strength training equipment. Method: This study randomly divided twenty healthy adults into two groups. The experimental group engaged in isokinetic strength training for 30 minutes, three times a week, over a four-week period. In contrast, the control group did not participate in any exercise regimen. We assessed several outcome measures including physical functions (sit-to-stand test, flexibility, Timed Up and Go test), grip strength, balance, thigh circumference, the Korean version of the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), and the Korean version of the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC). Additionally, the experimental group's self-perceived improvement in lower limb condition was evaluated using the Global Rating of Change (GROC) scale. Results: The experimental group showed significant improvements compared to the control group in various aspects: reduced sit-to-stand test duration (7.00±2.05 seconds), increased flexibility (4.69±3.90 cm), improved grip strength (1.54±1.74 kg), increased thigh circumference (left: 1.29±1.19 cm, right: 1.19±1.27 cm), enhanced Timed Up and Go test performance (-1.47±0.86 seconds), better balance (eyes open stance: -8.08±4.03 cm, eyes closed stance: -0.27±0.13 cm/s), and a decrease in depression severity (-0.15±1.51 points). Furthermore, significant increases were observed in the experimental group's maximal isokinetic strength at 90°/s for both flexion (19.62±7.03 Nm) and extension (19.60±14.65 Nm) over the study period. Conclusion: The findings suggest that isokinetic strength training equipment can significantly enhance physical functions in seniors when incorporated into an exercise regimen.
