  • Germination rate and early growth in crop such as rice, soybean, and perilla were observed after irradiation of $^{\gamma}$-ray (Co-60) in order to determine the effects of low does radiation. The low dose radiation was able to improve the early growth in crops and their agricultural charaters. Germination rate of 2Gy-irradiatied rice seeds was high and also were seeding height and fresh weight of the 0.5 Gy-irradiated. Germination rate and early growth of soybean were high in 4Gy-irradiated group. Perilla gew ot so promisingly after after low dose irradiation, however there slightly increasing effects on germination rate, seeding height and fresh weightat 2Gt-, 1Gy-, and 1Gy irradiated group, respectively.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the influence of artificial acid rain on the growth of soybean irradiated with the low dose gamma radiation. The growth patterns of Hwangkumkong and Bangsakong were not dependent on the acid rain treatment and the period of seed storage but the radiation dose. In Hwangkumkong, the optimal irradiation dose for the growth promotion was lower in the acid rain treatment group than the control group. The symptom of acid rain damage appeared broadly around pH 2.20, were higher in Hwangkumkong than in Bangsakong, and were more effective in the seeds of 1997 than 1995. But the damage symptom of Bangsakong was not dependent on the acid rain treatment and the irradiation of gamma radiaiton.

  • Scatter-air ratios are used for the purpose of calculating scattered dose in the medium. The computation of the primary and the scattered dose separately is particularly useful in the dosimetry of irregular fields with shielding block in radiation field, dose distribution of scattered radiation using 18MeV Linear accelerator and Co-50 teletherapy measured. The effect of scattered radiation dose by protecting block was been ignored in radiation therapy, 2-3% of scattered radiation may be 90-200 cGy which could be influence vitial complications such as cataract, oligospermia or sterility. So that exect calculation of such scattered radiation especially for large field $\bar{c}$ small protection of vitial organ is very important. The purpose of this article is to calculate scattered radiation by protecting block exactly for irregular field $\bar{c}$ Linac or Co-60 irradiation and to applicate these data in clinical radiation field. Authors could obtain following results. 1. The lesser angle between shielding block showed more scattered radiation. 2. With decreasing distance between shielding blocks, the dependent of scattered radiation were increased. 3. Output of 18MeV Linear accelerator and Co-60 was related linear proportion on field size, but independent according to the size of shielding block in 18MeV Linear accelerator.

  • For determination of mutation frequency induced by chronic irradiation of low dose gamma rays, Tradescarrfia clone 4430 was exposed to Co-60 ${\gamma}$ rays with different exposure rates from 3.6mR/day to 182R/day in or out of the Gamma Field at Kumkok Experiment Farm of KAERI. Somatic mutations based on pink mutant events of the stamen hair cells were clearly observed by the treatment. The pink mutant events were increased proportionally with increasing exposure rates of gamma ray except for relatively high dose rates of 105 R/day and 182 R/day, indicating saturation effect of mutation. The somatic pink mutations could be fairly detectable even in the low dose rate of 3.6mR/day. Therefore, this stamen hair system of Tradescantia clone 4430 seemed to be an reasonable test system for detecting mutability of low level irradiation. These results imply that artificial mutation induction in the fruit and ornamental trees could be expected in the ${\gamma}$-field.

  • Dose response relationships for one of biological end-points (gene mutation) in somatic cells of Tradescantia 4430 clones were studied using neutrons coming out of a californium-252 isotopic source. And the relative biological effectiveness (RBE) of neutrons in relation to X-rays in the induction of TSH pink mutations was assessed. Inflorescences were irradiated with X-ray from X-ray generator and neutrons from $^{252}Cf$ source. Irradiated cuttings were incubated with aeration in neutrient solution under the controlled condition. For more than 4 weeks after irradiation cell mutations were scored. Pink mutation frequencies were calculated from the pooled data for the peak interval (days 6 to 13 post-irradiation). Somatic cell mutations in TSH showed linear dose response relationships in the range of neutron doses available for the experiment. The RBE values estimated for neutrons in relation to X-rays were in the range 3.1 to 6.8, which were much lower than normally recognized value.

  • Related institutions that use radiation are diverse in Korea, such as research, medical care, and education. Recently, the number of examinations and visits to medical institutions is increasing. As a result, the number of radiological examinations in medical institutions is increasing. Radiation safety management is necessary as well as exposure of radiation workers. For safety management, first of all, it is necessary to wear the personal exposure dosimeter correctly and measure it accurately after wearing it. This study tries to evaluate and verify the measurement straightness of PLD devices by radiation of a diagnostic generator. Radiation division irradiation time interval was measured after irradiating 10 times at 10, 30, and 60 sec and irradiating the irradiation distance from 30 to 100 cm at 10 cm intervals to measure the change in absorbed dose depending on the distance. As a result, there was no difference in absorbed dose by time interval. This is considered to be helpful in various studies by using a diagnostic generator for the study of high absorbed dose.

  • Background: This study investigated the characteristics of optically stimulated luminescence dosimeters (OSLDs) with fully filled deep electron/hole traps in the kV energy ranges. Materials and Methods: The experimental group consisted of InLight nanoDots, whose deep electron/hole traps were fully filled with 5 kGy pre-irradiation (OSLDexp), whereas the non-pre-irradiated OSLDs were arranged as a control group (OSLDcont). Absorbed doses for 75, 80, 85, 90, 95, 100, and 105 kVp with 200 mA and 40 ms were measured and defined as the unit doses for each energy value. A bleaching device equipped with a 520-nm long-pass filter was used, and the strong beam mode was used to read out signal counts. The characteristics were investigated in terms of fading, dose sensitivities according to the accumulated doses, and dose linearity. Results and Discussion: In OSLDexp, the average normalized counts (sensitivities) were 12.7%, 14.0%, 15.0%, 10.2%, 18.0%, 17.9%, and 17.3% higher compared with those in OSLDcont for 75, 80, 90, 95, 100, and 105 kVp, respectively. The dose accumulation and bleaching time did not significantly alter the sensitivity, regardless of the filling of deep traps for all radiation qualities. Both OSLDexp and OSLDcont exhibited good linearity, by showing coefficients determination (R2) > 0.99. The OSL sensitivities can be increased by filling of deep electron/hole traps in the energy ranges between 75 and 105 kVp, and they exhibited no significant variations according to the bleaching time.

  • The biological effects of radiation are dependent on the dose rate and dose of radiation. In this study, effects of dose and dose rate using whole body radiation on plasma cytokines and blood count from male BALB/c mice were evaluated. We examined the blood and cytokine changes in mice exposed to a low (3.49m Gy $h^{-1}$) and high (2.6 Gy $min^{-1}$) dose rate of radiation at a total dose of 0.5 and 2 Gy, respectively. Blood from mice exposed to radiation were evaluated using cytokine assays and complete blood count. Peripheral lymphocytes and neutrophils decreased in a dose dependent manner following high dose rate radiation. The peripheral lymphocytes population remained unchanged following low dose rate radiation; however, the neutrophils population increased after radiation. The sera from these mice exhibited elevated levels of flt3 ligand and granulocyte-colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF), after high/low dose rate radiation. These results suggest that low-dose-rate radiation does not induce blood damage, which was unlike high-dose-rate radiation treatment; low-dose-rate radiation exposure activated the hematopoiesis through the increase of flt3 ligand and G-CSF.

  • Two chrysanthemum varieties, 'ARTI-purple' and 'ARTI-queen', were chronically irradiated with doses of 30, 50, 70, and 100 Gy for four weeks in gamma-phytotron, a long term irradiation facility. We investigated the growth, responses of antioxidant enzymes (ascorbate peroxidase, APX; catalase, CAT; peroxidase, POD; superoxidase dismutase, SOD) and malondialdehyde (MDA) contents under different doses of chronic-irradiation. The five plant growth measurements including plant height, number of leaves, internode length, stalk diameter and leaf thickness were investigated immediately after four week irradiation. The plant height (p<0.001), internode length (p<0.01), the number of leaves (p<0.001) and stalk diameter (p<0.05) were significantly decreased an increasing doses of gamma-ray. Among them, especially, the internode length was remarkably decreased showing the RD50 (Reduction Dose 50) at approximately 65 Gy. The antioxidant response after four weeks of recovery period, ascorbate peroxidase (APX) (p<0.01), superoxide dismutase (SOD) (p<0.01) and peroxidase (POD) (p<0.001) were significantly increased with an increasing dose of gamma-ray. And malondialdehyde (MDA) (p<0.01) contents showed the significant increase at the 70 and 100 Gy which means the oxidative stress was lasting for a considerable period. In this study, the 50 Gy irradiation as optimal dose showed higher growth than the $RD_{50}$, it also showed insignificant differences on the antioxidant responses and MDA contents. However, the 100 Gy dose showed lower growth than $RD_{50}$.

  • The aim of this work was to determine the method and predict the optimum conditions for egg quality stored for 7 days when combination treatments of irradiation and chitosan coating were applied using response surface methodology (RSM). A central composite design was chosen for the RSM in this study and the factors were irradiation dose (0~2 kGy) and concentration of chitosan coating material (0~2%). Performance of the irradiation and chitosan coating were evaluated by analyzing the egg quality and functional property factors. The predicted maximum level of Haugh units and foaming ability calculated by a developed model were 74.19 at 0 kGy of irradiation with coating by 0.96% chitosan solution and 50.83 mm at 2.0 kGy with 1.01%, respectively. The predicted minimum value of foam stability and 2-thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) value were 2.97 mm at 0.39 kGy with 0.21% and 0.54 mg malonaldehyde/kg egg yolk at 0 kGy with 0.90% of chitosan solution, respectively. Results clearly showed that gamma irradiation negatively affected the Haugh unit and TBARS but positively affected the foaming capacity. The estimated value from the developed model by RSM was verified by no statistical difference with observed value. Therefore, RSM can be a good tool for optimization and prediction of egg quality when 2 or more treatments are combined. However, one should decide the target quality first to achieve a successful implementation of this technology.
