The aim of this study was to develop a physical treatment method for obtaining iron concentrate with a grade higher than 60% from slag generated in the Waelz Kiln (WK) process. The size of the WK slag used in this work was several millimeters, with T-Fe and ZnO contents of 40.24% and 1.03%, respectively. The slag samples were pulverized in a laboratory rod mill for various grinding times, followed by a magnetic separation test under a low magnetic intensity of 0.05 T initially. The results showed that the highest iron grade was obtained from samples with a grinding time of 10 min. Additionally, for a grinding time of 20 min, the highest grade and recovery ratios were achieved at a magnetic intensity of 0.8 T. Based on these findings, the optimal physical treatment process proposed in this study resulted in iron concentrates with a grade of 61.34% and an enrichment ratio of 1.52.
Iron ore waste discarded around Choong-ju iron district, Choongchong-Bukdo is as low as 25 per cent of iron, mainly consisting of hematite and magnetite. In this mineral dressing test procedure 93 per cent of magnetite was separated and concentrated into the magnetite concentrate as high as 62 per cent. The remaining sample, mostly, hematite averages about 19.8 per cent of iron which can be concentrated with very good results with the optimum flotation conditioning-pH 3.0 and 3 cc per litre of aero-promoter #845 (0.5% sol.) and 1.5cc per litre of hydro-fluoric acid (40% sol.) and four times of cleaning flotation. Hematite concentrate averages 64.2 per cent of iron. The overall iron concentrate averages 63 per cent of iron with recovery 86 per cent of iron contained.
The purpose of this study was to examine the correlation between nutrient intakes and bone mineral density in female university students. A total 27 female university students were measured the anthropometric characteristics, dietary intake and the bone mineral density of carpus using DEXA. The average age, height, weight, % body fat, WHR, and BMI of the subjects were 22.7 years, 161.5 cm, 57.0 kg, 29.9%, 0.8, 21.8 kg/$m^2$, respectively. Bone mineral density of ultradis and distal carpus as T-value were -1.5 and -0.4, respectively. The daily energy intake of the subjects was 1589.0kcal. And the intakes of energy, calcium, iron, zinc, vitamin $B_2$, and folic acid did not meet the Korean RDAs. The daily total food intake of the subjects was 1011.0g and food intake from cereals and vegetables was high. The major food groups of mineral intake were vegetables/cereals/milks/fishes for calcium, cereals/meat/vegetables/fishes for phosphorus, cereals/vegetables/meats for iron, seasonings/vegetables/cereals for sodium, vegetables/cereals/seasonings for potassium, and cereals/meats for zinc. The body weight and body mass index were significantly positive correlated to the bone mineral density of average carpus, respectively. The intakes of animal calcium and vitamin $B_2$ were significantly negative correlated to the bone mineral density of average carpus, respectively. In conclusion, bone mineral density in carpus and nutrient intakes of some female university students were low. Therefore, health management and the study on relation between bone mineral density in various site and long-term intakes of nutrients in many subjects are required.
A number of epidemiological studies has indicated lifestyles including dietary habits are closely related to the development of certain forms of cancer. These findings have led several investigators to identify the ways in which these factors mdulate the risk of cancer. Seaweeds are rich sources of non-digestible polysaccharides which possibly posses physiological functions. In vitro studies showed several components in seaweeds inhibit tumor cell growth and mutagenicity of known food mutagens. On the other hand non-digestible polysaccharides of different food sources negatively affect mineral nutrition by decreasing mineral absorption. The objectives of this study was to investigate the effect of major seaweed intake on azoxymethane(AOM) - induced DNA damage a known cancer initiation step and on apparent absorption of calcium and iron. To accomplish these objectives twenty five ICR mice were divided into five groups and fed one of the following diets for 10 days : control diet d, diet containing 10% water-soluble fraction of seamustard or seatangle diet containing 10% water-insoluble fraction of seamustard or seatangle. AOM was injected 6 hours before sacrifice and N7-methylated guanines from the colonic DNA were quantified using a gas chromatography -mass spectroscopy. Fecal samples were collected on days 4 and 8. Caclium and iron contents of the diets and feces were analyzed using an atomic absorption spectrophotometry to determine the apparent absorption of these minerals. Results are as follows. AOM-induced guanine methylation of colon was decreased in animals fed diets containing water-soluble fractions of seamustard or seatangle compared to those in animals fed control diet although only the seatnagle fed group showed statistically significant effect. Apparent calcium absorption was significantly reduced in animals fed diets containing water-insoluble fractions of seaweeds. Iron absorption was significantly decreased and negatively balanced in animals fed diets containing water-insoluble fractions of both seaweeds, and water-soluble fraction of seatangle. In conclusion, seamustard and seatangle intakes may effectively prevent colon tumorigenesis by reducing a carcinogen-induced DNA damages, and more mechanistic studies on possible role of seaweeds on carcinogenesis are required. Also, adverse effects of seaweed diets cintaming a large amount of polysaccharides on mineral nutrition should be carefully monitored.
A balance study was conducted to determine the requirements of iron, copper, cobalt and manganese in crossbred calves. Six calves were fed milk average 10 percent of their body weight and were supplemented with 15 g mineral mixture daily. A balance trial was conducted at $2\frac{1}{2}$ months of age. The primary route of excretion was through digestive tract as 99.87, 80.99, 77.27 and 99.94 percent of Fe, Cu, Co and Mn were excreted through faeces. The requirements of Fe, Cu, Co and Mn were computed using the respective mineral balance data and were found to be 169.60, 7.20, 4.48 and 8.89 mg/kg respectively.
Using a galvanostatic charge/discharge cycler and cyclic voltammetry, we investigated for the first time the electrochemical properties of iron-containing minerals, such as chalcophanite, diadochite, schwertmannite, laihuite, and tinticite, as electrode materials for lithium secondary batteries. Lithium insertion into the mineral diadochite showed a first discharge capacity of about 126 mAh/g at an average voltage of 3.0 V vs. $Li/Li^+$, accompanied by a reversible capacity of 110 mAh/g at the 60th cycle. When the cutoff potential was down to 1.25 V, the iron was further reduced, giving rise to a new plateau at 1.3 V. Although the others showed discharge plateaus at low potentials of less than 1.6 V, these results give an important clue for the development of new electrode materials.
We try to use system dynamics to forecast the demand/supply and price, also transportation fare for iron ore. Iron ore is very important mineral resource for industrial production. The structure for this system dynamics shows non-linear pattern and we anticipated the system dynamic method will catch this non-linear reality better than the regression analysis. Our model is calibrated and tested for the past 6 year monthly data (2003-2008) and used for next 6 year monthly data(2008-2013) forecasting. The test results show that our system dynamics approach fits the real data with higher accuracy than the regression one. And we have run the simulations for scenarios made by possible future changes in demand or supply and fare related variables. This simulations imply some meaningful price and fare change patterns.
Previous studies have shown that plant-based vegetarian diets, which typically contain a variety of antioxidants and dietary fiber, help reduce the risk of heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and cancer. However, some studies have reported that vegetarian diets can lead to deficiencies in protein and trace minerals compared to non-vegetarian diets. This study was conducted to compare anthropometric measurements, blood parameters, dietary intake, and hair mineral status in long-term vegetarians (MV; moderate vegan, LV; lacto-ovo vegetarian) and non-vegetarians (NV). Thirty MV (12 males, 18 females; mean age, $50.58{\pm}5.05$ years), 15 LV (11 males, four females; mean age, $49.45{\pm}4.97$ years), and 30 NV (15 males, 15 females; mean age, $48.90{\pm}3.62$ years) participated. No significant differences were observed for age, height, weight, or body mass index, but body fat was significant lower in MV and LV males than that in NV males. White blood cell counts of MV, LV, and NV male subjects were significantly different. Dietary intake data showed that plant protein and plant iron intake were significantly higher in MV and LV than those in NV. Animal protein, animal fat, and animal iron intake were significantly higher in NV than those in MV and LV. A hair mineral analysis showed that calcium and iron were higher in the hair of MV and LV than those in NV. Zinc concentration in hair was not significantly different among the groups. The results suggest that vegetarian diets are adequate to sustain mineral status to at least the same degree as that of non-vegetarian diets.
The synthesis of kaolinite mineral from domestic diatomite for silica resource, commercial vailable gibbsite or alumina for alumina resource were made under various hydrothermal treatment, and the sythetic effect of acidic mineralizers, temperature treatment with time duration, particle size of alumina on formation of kaolinite mineral and the plastic properties of synthesized kaolinite were investigated. The various acidic mineralizers which are HCl, HNO3, H2SO4 and Oxalic acid were employed for hydrothermal reaction in the range of 0.01 mol/ι to 2 mol/ι concentration of each mineralizers. It was found that HCl in the level of 1 mol/ι solution produced highly yields of well-crystallized and platy form kaolinite mineral and gave the most effective extraction of iron oxide, compared to that of others, that HNO3 produced highly yield of kaolinite but lower extraction of iron oxide, that H2SO4 produced low yield of kaolinite and formed alunite mineral, and that oxialic acid formed spherical crystalline kaolinite and gave low extraction of iron oxide. Moreover, it showed that kaolinite minerals were well synthesized in a wide range of less than 2 mol/ι acids, but were poorly synthesized at more than 2 mol/ι acids. However, boehmite and kaolinite were coexistently formed in the temperature range of 18$0^{\circ}C$ and 20$0^{\circ}C$ when the calcined diatomite and gibbsite were involved. The well-ordered kaolinite mineral as a platy form was highly synthesized in the temperature range of 220 and 24$0^{\circ}C$, when the same marterials as above were used with treatment of 1 mol/ι HCl solution. The results also revealed that the size of crystalline platy form kaolinite, synthesized from alumina and calcined diatomite with treatment in 1 mol/ιHCl solution at 24$0^{\circ}C$, was much larger than that of gibbsite and calcined diatomite shown previously, and that kaolinite and corundum minerals were coexistently formed under any hydrothermal treatment conditions. The plasticity of synthesized kaolinite from under 2 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ alumina and calcined diatomite was very poor, and that of the synthesized kaolinite from raw diatomite and gibbsite gave higher than that of calcined diatomite and gibbsite.
