  • The author observed histochemically the nature of the calcified tissue in the rabbit dental pulp, induced by pulpal injection of potassium permanganate. The pulp of rabbit mandibular incisors were exposed and enlarged by a dental hand reamer. The exposed pulps were injected with 0.05ml of 20mM solution of potassium permanganate dissolved in Ringer's solution in experimental tooth. Also the control tooth received a pulpal injection of 0.05ml of Ringer's solution. After pulpal injection, the tooth was plugged with a gutta-percha root canal point. The staining techniques were hematoxylin-eosin stain, van Gieson stain, PAS reaction, toluidine blue stain, alcian blue-hematoxylin stain and colloidal iron-picric acid stain. The results were as follows: 1. The pulp on experimental tooth showed osteodentin-like calcified tissue. Also, in some areas, false denticle-like substance were observed. 2. The central portion of the calcified matrix showed metachromasia in toluidine blue stain had strong staining capacity in alcian blue stain. 3. The peripheral portion of the calcified tissue revealed marked van Gieson positive reaction for collagen. But their staining ability in alcian blue was slight and metachromasia was not appeared.

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of iron from an amino acid complex (Availa-$Fe^{\circledR}$) on the iron status of neonatal and suckling piglets. A total of 24 gestating sows (Landrace${\times}$Large White) were randomly allocated to three dietary treatments. The control diet contained 80 mg $kg^{-1}$ Fe from ferrous sulfate heptahydrate ($FeSO_4$.$7H_2O$), while the two experimental diets were supplemented with an additional 120 mg $kg^{-1}$ Fe from Availa-$Fe^{(R)}$ or $FeSO_4$.$7H_2O$, respectively. The lactating sows remained the same iron treatments as gestating sows, while neonatal piglets of 24 litters born from the above sows were allotted to another three treatments. Piglets from the sows of the control treatment were fed basal diet with no supplemental Fe as control treatment, but were injected with 100 mg Fe as Fe dextran at birth. Piglets from the sows of Availa-$Fe^{(R)}$ or $FeSO_4$.$7H_2O$ treatments were supplemented with 120 mg $kg^{-1}$ iron from Availa-$Fe^{(R)}$ or $FeSO_4$.$7H_2O$, respectively. The total born alive and weaned, and the average piglets weight at birth and at weaning were not significantly affected by the sow' dietary treatments (p>0.05). Iron from Availa-$Fe^{(R)}$ did not demonstrate a statistically significant improvement in hemoglobin concentration, hematocrit and plasma iron of sows on day 90 and 105 of pregnancy and the milk iron of sows during lactation (p>0.05). Neonatal piglets in the Availa-$Fe^{(R)}$ treatment had a significantly higher hemoglobin concentration (p<0.05) and higher hematocrit and plasma iron (p>0.05) than those in the other two treatments, respectively. The hemoglobin of suckling piglets in the Availa-$Fe^{(R)}$ treatment was higher than that of piglets in $FeSO_4$.$7H_2O$ treatment on day 28 (p<0.05). The total iron binding capacity of piglets in Availa-$Fe^{(R)}$ treatment was lower than that of piglets in the control and $FeSO_4$.$7H_2O$ treatment on day 14 (p<0.05), but there was not a statistically significant difference among three treatments on day 28 (p>0.05). However, the hemoglobin and hematocrit of suckling piglets injected with Fe were higher than those of piglets in the other two treatments (p<0.05). This study indicated that the addition of 120 mg $kg^{-1}$ iron from amino acid complex into the diets improved iron status of neonatal and nursing piglets more effectively than the addition of 120 mg $kg^{-1}$ iron from $FeSO_4$.$7H_2O$, however, this improvement of the organic Fe was not sufficient to replace the Fe injection for prevention of iron-deficiency anemia.

  • DIWS system was employed to treat hydrochloric acid gas from cold rolling mill process of iron and steel industry. Chlorine gas generated from the acid regeneration system was combined with hydrogen gas and hydrogen chloride gas was increased to 50%. After the injection of Na2S2O3 to remove chlorine gas, the removal of hydrogen chloride was stably kept 87.5~88.8%, where the inflow was 13.1~13.4ppm and the outflow was 1.5~1.7ppm. DIWS system can be recommended for the real iron and steel plant because it was stably maintained not only the air emission standards but also the reduction of chemical usage.

  • Silk sericin protein was hydrolyzed by seven proteolytic enzymes to examine the effectiveness of the hydrolysates to bind iron. The amino acid nitrogen contents of hydrolysates by Flavourzyme were higher than the others enzymes, and its iron binding capacity showed dose-dependent increase. The bioavailability of iron binding peptide from sericin hydolysates was investigated in iron-deficient rats. Three-week-old male rats were fed iron-deficient diet for three weeks. Rats were divided into four groups (DD: no treated group on iron deficient diet, DD+HI: heme-iron treated group, DD+OI: sericin-Fe, and DD+II: inorganic iron ($FeSO_4$) treated group, and then iron supplemented by injection for one week. After oral administration for one week, the iron contents of serum and liver were significantly higher in DD+OI ($4.2\;{\mu}g/mL$ and $80.1\;{\mu}g/mL$) and DD+HI ($3.2\;{\mu}g/mL$ and $70.6\;{\mu}g/mL$) than DD ($2.0\;{\mu}g/mL$ and $47.9\;{\mu}g/mL$). Hemoglobin content of treated groups was significantly higher than DD, but the significant difference among groups was not shown. Aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels did not show any significant difference among all groups. Binding iron to peptide from sericin hydolysates seems to improve its bioavailability and to hasten the cure of iron deficiency in experimental rat.

  • This experiment was carried out to find out the effect of piglet anemia prevention of the chelated iron with amino acids fed to the sows during the late gestation and early lactation as compared with oral iron administration, intramuscular iron-dextran injection and control (receiving no iron supplement) groups. Twenty crossbred sows (Landrace ${\times}$ Large White) bred purebred Large White boars were used to evaluate four treatments. The results obtained in this experiment were as follows: 1. There were no significant differences among the average body weights at birth in all the treatment groups. But the average body weight at 15 days of age was heaviest in the chelated iron group. At 35 days of age, the control group was lightest in the treatment groups. 2. The survival rates at weaning were not recognized significantly among all the treatment groups. 3. At birth and 15 days of age, the levels of hemoglobin, red blood cell and hematocrit of the chelated iron group were higher (P<.05) than those of the control group. But at 35 days of age, they were not recognized significantly.

  • Optimal analytical conditions have been established for mixing and reaction coil length, concentrations of ECR, CTAB, and acetate, reaction temperature and pH in the determination of aluminum by using flow injection analysis(FIA). Detection limit and repeatability for this system were $3{\mu}g/L$ and better than 1% of relative standard deviation, respectively. The interference from iron(III) was suppressed up to 6mg/L of iron(III) by $0.1{\mu}M$ ascorbic acid, and the interference from fluoride could be tolerated in absorption of Al/ECR/CTAB derivative by 10mM boric acid at pH 3.5 adjusted with nitric acid. This FIA system was applied to the determination of aluminum leached from cooking utensils by distilled and tap water containing fluoride ranged from 0.5 to 2mg/L by measurement of absorbance for Al/ECR/CTAB at 585nm. The leached aluminum content was increased with increasing concentration of fluoride. The aluminum contents leached from aluminum utensils by tap water were about 9 fold higher than those leached by distilled water, whereas aluminum contents leached by distilled water containing fluoride were about 2 fold higher compared to those leached by distilled water. That represented that other dissolved substances as well as fluoride in tap water contributed to liberation of aluminum from aluminum utensils. A comparison between FIA data and ICP-AES data by correlation and paired t test showed that the FIA system could be accepted as a good alternative method for the determination of aluminum in tap water.

  • Iron and manganese contents are usually over the limit of drinking water standard (0.3 mg/L) in unconsolidated aquifer of river bank filtration site in Nakdong river. Surge block and air surging techniques used in this study are useful tools to remove the slime within gravels and pebbles, to increase permeability of aquifer, to provide oxygen into aquifer, and to discharge iron and manganese oxides from a well. Surging activity brought about $5{\sim}8$ and $5{\sim}9$ times decreases in $Fe_{(total)}$ and $Fe^{2+}$ contents, and also 10 times decrease in $Mn^{2+}$ contents compared to non-surging condition, respectively. Additionally, iron oxide and manganese oxide increased up $1{\sim}1.2$ times after surging. This result shows that air injection into the aquifer can help iron and manganese content decreased and in-situ treatment technology needs to be introduced in river bank filtration project in South Korea.

  • To investigate kinetics of free $^{177}Lu$ and $^{177}Lu$-labeled thermally cross-linked superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (TCL-SPION), suspensions were intravenously injected into the tail vein of mice at a dose of $5{\mu}Ci$/mouse or 15 mg/kg body weight, respectively. Free $^{177}Lu$ radioactivity levels were highest in kidney followed by liver and lung 1 day post-injection. $^{177}Lu$-labeled TCL-SPION radioactivity in liver and spleen was significantly higher compared to that of other organs throughout the experimental period (p < 0.05). Radioactivity in blood, brain, and epididymis rapidly declined until 28 days. Based on these results, TCL-SPION could be a safe carrier of therapeutics.

  • The study is about the effect of tetracycline-HCl on the amelogenesis and the dentinogenesis of the albino rats by means of histochemistry and fluorescence microscopy. Females in oestrus were mated overnight and examined the next morning for evidence of copulation. The mothers were intraperitonealy injected with a single dose of tetracycline-HCl from the eighth to tenth day of gestation. The heads of new born rats were fixed in Carnoy's solution and 10% formalin solution. The staining methods were alizarin red S stain, PAS reaction, colloidal iron reaction, Morin's stain and hematoxylin-eosin stain, The results were as follows: 1. By the single injection of tetracycline, the matrix formation of enamel and dentin were disturbed, and the shape and arrangement of ameloblast and odontoblast were distorted. 2. It seemed that, with the higher dose of tetracycline, the positive materials of PAS reaction were increased in the disturbed enamel and dentin matrix, but those of alizarin red S stain and colloidal iron reaction were decreased. 3. The fluorescence intensity in the disturbed enamel and dentin matrix were higher than the other areas and appeared to increase gradually with the higher dose of tetracycline.

  • This study was performed using a laminar flow reactor that could replicate the combustion environment of pulverized coal in a blast furnace. Since a pulverized coal injection system was developed for iron making, the combustion characteristics of pulverized coal have been important in the iron and steel industry. The flame structure, particle temperature, and exhaust gas were investigated for different types of coal. The results of this study demonstrated that the combustion characteristics of coal are influenced by several properties of individual coals. In particular, the CO emission and volatile matter content of individual coals were found to have a strong influence on their combustion characteristics. Thus, this study found the properties of the coals to be significant and focused on the particle temperature and CO and $CO_2$ emissions.
