  • The compounds associated with corrosion, in metallic archaeological samples of carbon steel of insular origin were evaluated to establish their degree of deterioration and structural damage against air pollution. The iron phases present in samples of archaeological artifacts were detected by Raman spectroscopy and confocal Raman microcopy. These samples mainly exhibited ing mainly ${\beta}$-FeO(OH) type goethite oxyhydroxides and small amounts of akaganeite ${\alpha}$-FeO(OH) lepidocrocite ${\gamma}$-FeO(OH) due to dominant chloride in a marine environment and non-stoichiometric oxyhydroxides Fe (II + / III +) as indicators of early corrosion. Some parts showed the presence of magnetic maghemite indicating high corrosion. ${\gamma}$-FeO(OH) is a precursor of phases associated with advanced marine corrosion. By studying its decomposition by Raman spectroscopy, it was synthesized with the following sequence: ${\gamma}-FeO(OH){\rightarrow}{\alpha}-FeO(OH)+{\gamma}-FeO(OH)$, ${\rightarrow}{\gamma}-Fe_2O_3+Fe_3O_4$. Ferric compounds provided evidence for the effect of intensity of laser on them, constituting a very useful input for the characterization of oxidation of iron in this type of artifacts. Thus, destructive analysis techniques should be avoided in addition to the use of small amounts of specimen.

  • In this study, iron nanoparticles impregnated hydrochar (FeNPs@HC) was synthesized using lignocellulosic waste and simple one-pot synthetic method. During hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) process, the mixture of lignocellulosic waste and ferric nitrate (0.1~0.5 M) as a precursor of iron nanoparticles was added and heated to 220℃ for 3 h in a teflon sealed autoclave, followed by calcination at 600℃ in N2 atmosphere for 1 h. For the characterization of the as-prepared materials, X-ray diffraction (XRD), cation exchange capacity (CEC), fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), transmission electron microscope (TEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS) were used. The change of Fe(III) concentration in the feedstock influenced characteristics of produced FeNPs@HC and removal efficiency towards As(V) and Pb(II). According to the Langmuir isotherm test, maximum As(V) and Pb(II) adsorption capacity of Fe0.25NPs@HC were found to be 11.81 and 116.28 mg/g respectively. The results of this study suggest that FeNPs@HC can be potentially used as an adsorbent or soil amendment for remediation of groundwater or soil contaminated with arsenic and cation heavy metals.

  • In order to elucidate the effect of heme compounds on lipid oxidation in roasted and/or reheated mackerel and pacific saury, changes in myoglobin, metmyoglobin, total iron, nonheme iron and heme iron content were measured. Throughout the steps of roasting, heating and reheating, myoglobin content was decteased more rapidly roasted at $180^{\circ}C$ for 20 min in fillet samples than those roasted at $200^{\circ}C$ for 15 min or $220^{\circ}C$ for 10 min. When the skinless samples were roasted at $180^{\circ}C$ for 20 min, about $38\%$ of myoglobin in raw meat were remained. The skinless fillet roasted at the lower temperature resulted the higher level of metmyoglobin due to the reduced myoglobin. Regardless of roasted temperature and time, total iron content was retained the level of raw meat throughout processing. 2 times of nonheme iron content was noted in the skinless fillet samples roasted at $180^{\circ}C$ for 20 min. All samples, heme iron content was decreased much lower by roasted temperature and in absence of skin on fillet. It was decreased about $33\%$ when roasted at $180^{\circ}C$ for 20 min in the skinless fillet in case of pacific saury.

  • Polypyrrole (PPy) was made by an emulsion polymerization using iron (III) chloride ($FeCl_3$) as an initiator and dodecyl benzene sulfuric acid (DBSA) as an emulsifier and dopant. Poly (2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (PPO) was sulfonated by chlorosulfonic acid (CSA). The cathode was composed of $PPy^+DBS^-$ complex, conductor powder, and PPO or sulfonated poly (2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (SPPO) as a binder or dopant. The charge-discharge performance of $PPy^+DBS^-/SPPO$ cathode was increased as the extent of about 50%, than $PPy^+DBS^-/PPO$. This is because SPPO played a role as a binder as well as a dopant. In addition, sulfonation brings out the increase of miscibility between PPy and SPPO, and the increase of contact area between cathode and electrolyte.

  • Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a targeted-tumor treatment system using a photosensitizer, light and oxygen to treat malignant tumor. We have investigated the cytotoxicity of 4 types of phthalocyanine derivative (silver phthalocyanine, iron (III) phthalocyanine, copper (II) phthalocyanine, nickel (II) phthalocyanine) against lung and breast cancers based on photodynamic therapy. As a result, phthalocyanine derivatives indicated a higher anticancer activity on a breast cancer cell line. Among the tested phthalocyanines, silver phthalocyanine (AgPc) showed a lower cytotoxicity against a normal cell line. In addition AgPc gave a good color characteristic when it is solubilized in water. Finally AgPc was selected as a potential antitumor agent for breast cancer.

  • It is known that ethanolamines play a critical role for deacidification of paper sized by alum-rosin. However, amines also are effective as a chelating agent of metal. The present work was focused on whether amines could scavenge metals and prevent from the aging of paper. Metals such as alum, copper(II) and iron(III) was added to paper, and the paper treated with amines was aged in a thermo-hygrostat for 3-6 days. In the case of paper added to alum, the amines efficiency against paper aging was good in the oder of triethanolamine, diethanolamine and monoethanolamine attributable to the intensity of basicity and steric effect. Even in the case of paper treated with copper(II) chloride, iron(III) chloride, and copper(II) chloride, the significant preservation efficiency was shown by ethanolamine during accelerated aging. This outcome pinpoints the fact that ethanolamine can prevent paper aging not only from acid by neutralizing acid contained in paper but also from metals by producing of complexes with metals. These consequences above convince that ethanolamine makes it possible for mass deacidification for paper which contains acid and metals. Future studies should be conducted concerning whether, in reality, the treatment of its gas mode, in a single or multiple applications, has significant effect on lessening paper aging.

  • Silver nanoparticles were attached by chemical reduction after synthesizing a porous PVK-CTA complex. The PVK-CTA complex was synthesized by polymerizing N-vinylcarbazole in a CTA-chloroform solution using iron(III) chloride as an oxidizing agent and a honeycomb-pattern with uniformly formed macropores was formed by applying steam to the complex surface soaked with a volatile solvent under humid conditions. Using TTF as a reducing agent and PVP as a dispersant, silver nanoparticles were attached on the Honeycomb-pattern complex surface through chemical reduction. The formation of the complex was confirmed by FT-IR and UV-Vis spectrometry, and the degree of thermal decomposition of the complexes was analyzed after N-vinylcarbazole was polymerized by varying its concentration. The uniformity of the pores on the composite surface and the dispersibility of the attached silver nanoparticles were investigated by SEM. The dispersibility of the silver nanoparticles was also analyzed by varying the concentrations of reducing agent and dispersant and precursor.

  • Optimal analytical conditions have been established for mixing and reaction coil length, concentrations of ECR, CTAB, and acetate, reaction temperature and pH in the determination of aluminum by using flow injection analysis(FIA). Detection limit and repeatability for this system were $3{\mu}g/L$ and better than 1% of relative standard deviation, respectively. The interference from iron(III) was suppressed up to 6mg/L of iron(III) by $0.1{\mu}M$ ascorbic acid, and the interference from fluoride could be tolerated in absorption of Al/ECR/CTAB derivative by 10mM boric acid at pH 3.5 adjusted with nitric acid. This FIA system was applied to the determination of aluminum leached from cooking utensils by distilled and tap water containing fluoride ranged from 0.5 to 2mg/L by measurement of absorbance for Al/ECR/CTAB at 585nm. The leached aluminum content was increased with increasing concentration of fluoride. The aluminum contents leached from aluminum utensils by tap water were about 9 fold higher than those leached by distilled water, whereas aluminum contents leached by distilled water containing fluoride were about 2 fold higher compared to those leached by distilled water. That represented that other dissolved substances as well as fluoride in tap water contributed to liberation of aluminum from aluminum utensils. A comparison between FIA data and ICP-AES data by correlation and paired t test showed that the FIA system could be accepted as a good alternative method for the determination of aluminum in tap water.

  • Statistical design of experiments was performed to optimize MOF-235 synthesis process. Concentrations of terephthalic acid (TPA), iron (III) chloride hexahydrate, N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) and ethanol were important factors to develop the crystal structure of MOF-235. MOF-235 was synthesized with various concentrations of the listed chemicals above and the crystallinity was measured by XRD. The effect of the composition on the synthesis of MOF-235 was evaluated using a statistical analysis. For the variance analysis using F-test, the concentration of ethanol showed the greatest effect on the crystallinity and TPA the least influential. A regression model for predicting the crystallinity of MOF-235 was derived and the prediction results for two synthetic variables were presented using contour plots. Finally, the crystallinity was predicted by a mixture method with $FeCl_3$, ethanol and DMF.

  • FeS, as a natural reduced iron mineral, has been recognized to be a viable reactive material for As(III) sequestration in natural and engineered systems. In this study, FeS-coated sand packed columns were tested to evaluate the As(III) removal capacities under anaerobic conditions at pH 5, 7 and 9. The column obtained As(III) removal capacity was then compared with the capacity result obtained from batch reactors. In the comparison, two different approaches were used. The first approach was used the total As(III) removal capacity which method was proved to be useful for interpreting pH 5 system. The second approach was used to consider sorption non-linearity and proved to be useful for interpreting the pH 9. The results demonstrated that a mechanistic understanding of the different removal processes at different pH conditions is important to interpret the column experimental results. At pH 5, where the precipitation of arsenic sulfide plays the major role in the removal of arsenic, the column shows a greater removal efficiency than the batch system due to the continuous dissolution of sulfide and precipitation of arsenic sulfide. At pH 9, where adsorption mainly governs the arsenic removal, the sorption nonlinearity should be considered in the estimation of the column capacity. This study highlighted the importance of understanding reaction mechanism to predict column performance using batch-obtained experimental results.
