A study on new measures of open innovation and comparison of openness between Korea and Japan firms (개방형 혁신 지표 개발 및 한국과 일본 기업의 개방형 혁신 비교연구)

  • While there are increasing requests for open innovation, prior studies have focused mainly on the utilizing the external sources. This study suggests to broaden the way of measuring openness to include the innovation management factors and output besides of utilizing the external sources. Additionally, the new measures will compare the status of openness in small and medium enterprises between Korea and Japan. There is greater differences in openness between SMEs and big firms in Japan than ones in Korea. Although SMEs in Japan utilize the external knowledge sources more actively than ones in Korea, they show less openness from the perspective of managerial factors such as metric for open innovation, collaboration system, investment for collaboration, and performance.

Solar Photovoltaics Technology: No longer an Outlier

  • The prospects of current and coming solar-photovoltaic (PV) technologies are envisioned, arguing this solar-electricity source is beyond a tipping point in the complex worldwide energy outlook. Truly, a revolution in both the technological advancements of solar PV and the deployment of this energy technology is underway; PV is no longer an outlier. The birth of modern photovoltaics (PV) traces only to the mid-1950s, with the Bell Telephone Laboratories' development of an efficient, single-crystal Si solar cell. Since then, Si has dominated the technology and the markets, from space through terrestrial applications. Recently, some significant shift toward technology diversity have taken place. Some focus of this presentation will be directed toward PV R&D and technology advances, with indications of the limitations and relative strengths of crystalline (Si and GaAs) and thin-film (a-Si:H, Si, Cu(In,Ga)(Se,S)2, CdTe). Recent advances, contributions, industry growth, and technological pathways for transformational now and near-term technologies (Si and primarily thin films) and status and forecasts for next-generation PV (nanotechnologies and non-conventional and "new-physics" approaches) are evaluated. The need for R&D accelerating the now and imminent (evolutionary) technologies balanced with work in mid-term (disruptive) approaches is highlighted. Moreover, technology progress and ownership for next generation solar PV mandates a balanced investment in research on longer-term (the revolution needs revolutionary approaches to sustain itself) technologies (quantum dots, multi-multijunctions, intermediate-band concepts, nanotubes, bio-inspired, thermophotonics, ${\ldots}$ and solar hydrogen) having high-risk, but extremely high performance and cost returns for our next generations of energy consumers. This presentation provides insights to the reasons for PV technology emergence, how these technologies have to be developed (an appreciation of the history of solar PV)-and where we can expect to be by this mid-21st century.

An Analysis of Land Cover Classification Methods Using IKONOS Satellite Image (IKONOS 영상을 이용한 토지피복분류 기법 분석)

  • Recently the high-resolution satellite images are helpfully using the land cover, status data for the natural resources or environment management. The effective satellite analysis process for these satellite images that require high investment can be increase the effectiveness has become increasingly important. In this Study, the statistical value of the training data is calculated and analyzed during the preprocessing. Also, that is explained about the maximum likelihood classification of traditional classification method, artificial neural network (ANN) classification method and Support Vector Machines(SVM) classification method and then the IKONOS high-resolution satellite imagery was produced the land cover map using each classification method. Each result data had to analyze the accuracy through the error matrix. The results of this study prove that SVM classification method can be good alternative of the total accuracy of about 86% than other classification method.

An Overview of Kenyan Aquaculture: Current Status, Challenges, and Opportunities for Future Development

  • The Kenyan aquaculture sector is broadly categorized into freshwater aquaculture and mariculture. Whereas freshwater aquaculture has recorded significant progress over the last decade, the mariculture sector has yet to be fully exploited. The Kenyan aquaculture industry has seen slow growth for decades until recently, when the government-funded Economic Stimulus Program increased fish farming nationwide. Thus far, the program has facilitated the alleviation of poverty, spurred regional development, and led to increased commercial thinking among Kenyan fish farmers. Indeed, national aquaculture production grew from 1,000 MT/y in 2000 (equivalent to 1% of national fish production) to 12,000 MT/y, representing 7% of the national harvest, in 2010. The production is projected to hit 20,000 MT/y, representing 10% of total production and valued at USD 22.5 million over the next 5 years. The dominant aquaculture systems in Kenya include earthen and lined ponds, dams, and tanks distributed across the country. The most commonly farmed fish species are Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus, which accounts for about 75% of production, followed by African catfish Clarias gariepinus, which contributes about 21% of aquaculture production. Other species include common carp Cyprinus carpio, rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss, koi carp Cyprinus carpio carpio, and goldfish Carassius auratus. Recently, Kenyan researchers have begun culturing native fish species such as Labeo victorianus and Labeo cylindricus at the National Aquaculture Research Development and Training Centre in Sagana. Apart from limited knowledge of modern aquaculture technology, the Kenyan aquaculture sector still suffers from an inadequate supply of certified quality seed fish and feed, incomprehensive aquaculture policy, and low funding for research. Glaring opportunities in the Kenyan aquaculture industry include the production of live fish food, e.g., Artemia, daphnia and rotifers, marine fish and shellfish larviculture; seaweed farming; cage culture; integrated fish farming; culture of indigenous fish species; and investment in the fish feed industry.

A Study on the attitudes toward Research and Development of herbal products (제약업계의 한약제제 연구개발 현황 및 허가에 대한 인식도 조사 연구)

  • A survey was conducted to investigate the attitudes of pharmaceutical companies toward the status and permission of R & D of herbal products. The survey's results showed that some of them(42.9%) was conducting the R&D, and others(57.1%) were not conducting. As the results of analysis on the reason of R&D conducting, some of them(42.3%) answered that R&D of herbal products is more effective and powerful than these of synthetic products. And 23.1% answered that the cost of R&D is low and the time required is short. And another 23.1% answered that it has marketability and competitive power. As the results of analysis on the marketability of herbal products in Pharmaceutical Market, most of them(78.6%) answered that it seems enough. As the result of the comparison of synthetic drug and herbal products, the proportion of R&D investment on herbal products was lower than synthetic products in the preclinical study, the first clinical study and the second clinical study, and higher than in the third clinical study and the NDA. And the periods of R&D was long in most procedure except synthesis of new materials. As the results of analysis on the recognition of related regulation, most of them(73%) was yes. And 35.2% of the subjects thinks it enough.

Empirical Evaluation of BIM Coordinator Performance using Queuing Model in Construction Phase (대기행렬 모형을 활용한 시공단계 BIM 코디네이터 업무 성과 분석)

  • This study focuses on the BIM request for information(RFI) processing performance and quantitatively analyzes the performance of the BIM coordinator and the loss due to the waiting of the project participants. For these purposes, a method to quantitatively evaluate the performance of the BIM coordinator was proposed using a queueing model. For the verification, two projects in which BIM was applied in the construction phase were selected, and the BIM RFI data were collected through the analysis of the BIM monthly report and BIM coordinator work log of each project. In addition, the BIM input personnel, labor cost, and productivity data were collected through interviews with the experts of the case projects. The analysis of the BIM RFI processing performance of the BIM coordinator using the queueing model exhibited on a probabilistic basis that the waiting status of the project participants could vary depending on the preliminary BIM application to the design verification as well as the input number and level of the BIM coordinator personnel. In addition, the loss cost due to the waiting of the project participants was analyzed using the number of BIM RFIs waiting to be processed in the queueing system. Finally, the economic feasibility analysis for the optimal BIM coordinator input was performed considering the loss cost. The results of this study can be used to make decisions about the optimal BIM coordinator input and can provide grounds for the BIM return on investment (ROI) analysis considering the waiting cost of the project participants.

  • This study corresponds to an exploratory survey that identifies and organizes important decision factors for establishing R&D strategic portfolio in the application of digitalized Korean human-dataset. In the case of countries that have performed the above, the digitalized human-dataset and its visualization application development research are regarded as strategic R&D projects selected and supervised in national level. To achieve the goal of this study, we organize a professional group that reviews articles, suggests research topics, considers alternatives and answers questionnaires. With this study, we draw and refine the detailed factors; these are reflected during a strategic planning phase that includes R&D vision setting, SWOT analysis and strategy development, research area and project selection. In addition to this contribution for supporting the strategic planning, the study also shows the detailed research area's definition/scope and their priorities in terms of importance and urgency. This addition will act as a guideline for investigating further research and as a framework for assessing the current status of research investment.

  • Korean logistics industry have been focused on transportation business. However, with the expansion of the electronic commerce and on-line shopping, delivery service is now dramatically growing. Despite the expansion of logistics market, the domestic logistics industry have significant structural problems such as low productivity comparing with the advanced countries, relatively high cost and shortage of human resources and lack of professionalism of people in the industry. Logistics companies reallocate employees, use subcontractors, expand consignment and training the employees to overcome the labor shortages but it has some limits. In recognition of the importance of labor in the logistics industry, financial support and investment have increased. Logistics companies tend to hire consultants, set up logistics department or R&D center in order to establish highly productive logistics process and system so it is viewed that there will be considerable demands of human resources in the logistics industry. This study indicates implications and development direction of human resources in the logistics industry by looking into prospect and characteristic of the industry, employment status, training programs and qualification requirements.

The development of Masan Port through comparison of Free Trade Zones (자유무역지역 제도비교를 통한 마산항 발전방향)

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate CFZ(custom free zone) and FTZ(free trade zone) in Korean FTZ System and develop Masan Port in Korea Local Port. The main point of this discussion is to approach the efficient method ill developing Masan Port through comparison CFZ and FTZ. For this purpose, this paper is searched the present situation of logistics in Korea and Northeast Asia, also discussed the concept of FTZ in international status. Then CFZ accepted by Korean government started from the concept of FTZ and is the logistic-centered FTZ in the middle of three model, production-centerde model, production-logistic combination, and logistic-centered FTZ. But CFZ in centering logistic excepted the fundamental manufacture in Korean production. and is almost the same about other various sides, i. e. law and enforcement ordinance. etc This problem is decreasing the efficiency in Korean commercial system. Thus this paper indicate the view point and rightness of region economic through study of FTZ and CFZ in Masan Port. This paper says that FTZ is better then CFZ in Masan Port with comparing superior position about economic development direction, industrial structure, Foreign investment attraction, business fluctuation, national-local renovation. Therefore this paper concludes that the development of Masan Port needs the effort as follow : first, Masan Port must apply in enlarging FTA into Free Tree Area. Second, the government must develop the high-density and medium-small scale in Masan Port. Third, the local government must promote the amount of demand in Masan Port logistic. Forth, the government must actively propel great-sphere development in present Masan Port.

  • This paper focuses on the role of international standards related to industrial technology and to analyze determinants to affect ISMS and its performance. Particularly its financial and operational performance were measured by survey aiming at an influence of certification and its performances. The variables explaining the performance were drawn out from factor analysis and then critical variables to affect performance were discovered by ANOVA and regression analysis. As a result of the analysis considering heteroscedastic and factor analysis, type of business and firm size were not significantly related to the performance but the existence of information security unit, investment in information security and the status of security consciousness in executives and employees were positively related. As a result, this study shows that security certification should be implemented with suitable capabilities and the investments to protect from leaking industrial technology and proved the importance of the security certification as an infrastructures and system.
