Brake friction materials in railway applications are one of critical elements for acceleration and/or deceleration of vehicle, stop at designated position, and stability of vehicle operation. In this investigation, a comprehensive overview on international standards on brake friction materials, including UIC, JI, and AAR, was conducted to understand the current standards creation trend and collect the related information on brake friction materials with different applications. Moreover, the detailed conditions such as testing conditions and environment, testing items, and materials, were carefully reviewed and compared by each standard. The preliminary results will be used for the creation of Korean railway standards (KRS) on brake shoe materials.

This paper deals with the experimental investigation of the steel cord straightening during the stranding process. The over-twisting and roller straightening process are essential to improve the product quality during the stranding process. To investigate the effectiveness of two processes, four experimental cases are constructed according to the use of an over-twister and two roller straighteners. Three assessment items, such as the residual torsion, the arc-height and the preforming ratio, are measured in each experimental case for the quantitative evaluation of a steel cord. The steel cord shape is also measured to investigate the variation of the straightness efficiently after passing through each process. Finally, the effectiveness of the over-twisting and the roller straightening process is explained based on the experimental results.

A new instrument for early detection of Alzheimer's disease is constructed from the investigative items with both the investigation of living environment, and the functional tests of the sense, the physiology, and the left and right brains. This paper describes the indexes obtained from the results of test using a new instrument for early detection of Alzheimer's disease. The indexes for early detection of Alzheimer's disease were obtained from the investigations of the living environment and the social adaptability, the functional tests of the sight and the hearing in the five senses, and the functional tests of left hemispheres in brain.

The consumptions of oriental drugs are increasing year by year in Korea. However, there is no official standards or even proposal of the professional organizations. One hundred and twenty usual profitable items of oriental drugs are selected and attempted to standardize their origins, appearances, properties, purities and identification reactions in order to evaluate those qualities.

A versatile dimensionality assessment index DETECT has been developed for binary item response data by Kim (1994). The present paper extends the use of DETECT to the polytomously scored item data. A simulation study shows DETECT performs well in differentiating multidimensional data from unidimensional one by yielding a greater value of DETECT in the case of multidimensionality. An additional investigation is necessary for the dimensionally meaningful clustering methods, such as HAC for binary data, particularly sensitive to the polytomous data.

This study investigated human error characteristics of the 42 fatal industrial accidents reported by staff members of Korea Industrial Safety Corporation. Various types of human error were judged to be primary contributing factors in about 74 percent of the cases. Most of human error made by involved industrial operators resulted from two types of mistakes: (1) mistake in judgement of work situation, and (2) omission in daily check. It was concluded that preparation/observance for work procedure manuals, danger predication training and enforcement/Education of daily check routine would be effective preventive tools for these types of human error attributable to fatal industrial accidents.

It is well known that lactobacillus products are a living bacterial preparation, which acts as the antibacterial and antidiarrhea agents. Beause of the specificity as the living bacterial preparation, this preparation should be remarkably considered to the stabilities in its manufacturing process and storage more than any others. In this report, it has been considered about its stabilities as the following items. 1) Selection of strains. 2) Control of seed strains. 3) Cultivation and its conditions. 4) Dry of microorganisms. 5) Manufacture of products. 6) Products storage. 7) Concerning to administration.

In order to guarantee the safety of railway, the Railway Safety Law (RSL) and ordinances have been enforced. In RSL, the quality certification is required to guarantee the safety and performance of railway components. Therefore, in this investigation, the detailed guidelines and main contents for the enforcement of quality certification for railway components will be suggested, and the detailed items including the procedures, subjects, management, etc., will be addressed.

This paper reports in the investigation results about residual life cycle evaluation of the bogie frames. The investigations consist of following two items. The residual life cycle evaluation and wholesome state developed in the bogie frames. The statistical data of analysis about crack occurrences checked at each part of the bogie frames in preliminary and precision inspections. These results support the possibility of extending the life cycle by 5 years.

Our purpose is to make up criteria for children's motivation of achievement and develop them into reliable that effectively fit the domestic situations, through testing its reliability and validity. With a view to developing those criteria, questionnaire items were drawn out from our basic investigation and preliminary study, and reliability and validity were tested. For this, we carried out a survey from October 25, 2003 to November 7, 2003 on 586 children who were attending two primary schools in Seoul, in 5th and 6th grade, and analyzed the results. Out of 81 questionnaire items constructed through the preliminary study, we extracted 68 items which show satisfactory level of discrimination with $x^2$ confidence level p<.0l and V coefficient greater than .25. The factor analysis was performed on the 68 items and 49 items were extracted which have eigen value greater than 1 and factor load greater than .30. Then regression analysis was applied so that 13 items were taken out of consideration for the criteria, whose incremental contribution to the explained proportion due to regression turned out to be less than 3%. As a result, a total of 36 items were selected as the final measurement criteria was assessed by Cronbach' $\alpha$ coefficient for the items, and we obtained its value of .85 which is at a satisfactory level. The developed criteria has proven to be a useful tool for measuring domestic children's motivation of achievement.
