An inversion method regulated by the error in the measurement of the first arrival time was developed, and we conducted a feasibility study by applying the method to a real cross-well seismic data. The inversion is a two-step regulation process; 1) derive the measurement error bound based on the resolution of the velocity image want to derive, and exclude the records whose picking error is larger than the error bound, 2) set the travel time residual to zero if the residual is less than the measurement error. This process prevents the trivial residuals are accumulated and contribute to the velocity-model update. Comparison of two velocity images, one by using all records and another by using the regulate inversion method, shows that the later velocity image exhibits less numerical artefacts, and it also indicates that, according to the Fermat's principle, the latter image is a more feasible velocity model.
The conventional graphical representation of the instantaneous compensation power flow for single-phase active power filters(APFs) simply represents the active power flow and the reactive power flow which flowing between the power source and the active filter / the load. But, this method does not provide the information about the rectification mode and the compensation mode of APFs, especially, the loss for each mode was not considered at all. This is very important to understand the compensation operation characteristics of APFs. Therefore, this paper proposes the graphical representation of the instantaneous compensation power flow for single-phase APFs considering the instantaneous rectification mode and the instantaneous inversion mode. Three cases are verified in this paper - without compensation, with compensation of the active power 'p' and the fundamental reactive power 'q', and with compensation of only the distorted power 'h'. To ensure the validity of the proposed approach, PSIM simulation is achieved. As a result, we could confirm that the proposed approach was easy to explain the instantaneous compensation power flow considering the instantaneous rectification mode and the instantaneous inversion mode of APFs, also, Total Harmonic Distortion(THD)/Power Factor (P.F) and Fast Fourier Transform(FFT) analysis were compared for each case.
A method was developed for the controlled expression of an antimicrobial peptide magainin in Escherichia coli. A series of concatemeric magainin genes was constructed with a gene amplification vector, and fused to the 3'end of malE gene encoding the affinity ligand, E. coli maltose-binding protein (MBP). The construct directed the synthesis of the fusion protein with the magainin polypeptide fused to the C-terminus of MBP. The fusion protein was expressed in a tightly regulatable expression system which was under the control of an invertible promoter. The MBP-fused magainin monomer was expressed efficiently. However, the expression level of the MBP-fused magainin in E. coli decreased with the increasing size of multimers possibly because of the transcription and translation inhibition by the multimeric peptides. After purification using an amylose affinity column, the fusion protein was digested by factor Xa at a specific cleavage site between the monomers. The recombinant magainin had an antimicrobial activity identical to that of synthetic magainin. This experiment shows that a biologically active, antimicrobial peptide magainin can be produced by fusing to MBP, along with a promoter inversion vector system.
In this paper, we newly introduce the three-level byte-inversion transmission method for preventing LED flicker in visible light communication (VLC). The VLC transmitter sequentially sends the original signal and the inverted signal in byte units using a three-level LED modulator. The average optical power of the LED is kept constant during data transmission, thus flicker-free. In the VLC receiver, the original data is easily recovered using a simple comparator. This structure is very simple because additional clock or carrier is not required for flicker prevention. The developed flicker prevention scheme could be very useful for constructing the flicker-free indoor VLC system in low cost.
Borehole tests are commonly used as a tool to obtain the physical properties of soils and rocks. The results of borehole tests are, however, discontinuous. Interpolation methods are applied to interpret the data gap between the borehole test points. The interpolation is valid only if the horizontal variations of the ground between the test points are small enough to ignore. A surface wave inversion method was used to study the S wave velocity of the very soft soil to provide the continuous 2 dimensional S wave velocity structure. The resolution of the S wave velocity structure was used to interpret the inversion results.
New porous separators based on non-polyolefin materials including the blend of poly (vinyl chloride) (PVC)/poly (vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (P(VdF-co-HFP)/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), and the porous separator based on poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVdF) were prepared by phase inversion method. The porosity and morphology were controlled with phase inversion rate, which is governed by the relative content of non-solvent and solvent in coagulation bath. To enhance tensile strength, the solvent pre-evaporation and uni-axial stretching processes were applied. The ionic conductivity was increased with increasing stretching ratio, and tensile strength was increased with increasing solvent pre-evaporation time and stretching ratio. The 200% stretched PVdF separator showed 56 MPa of tensile strength, and the ionic conductivity of the stretched PVdF separator was $8.6{\times}10^{-4}\;S\;cm^{-1}\;at\;25^{\circ}C$.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the periodicity of shank-foot segment coupling and free torque before and after fatigue induced by prolonged running. Method: Fifteen young healthy male participants with a rear-foot strike ran on instrumented dual-belt treadmills at 70% of their maximum oxygen uptake for 65 min. Kinematic and ground reaction force data were collected for 20 continuous strides at 5 and 65 min (considered the fatigued condition). The approximate entropy tool was applied to assess the periodicity of the shank internal-external rotation, foot inversion-eversion, shank-foot segment coupling, and free torque for the two running conditions. Results: The periodicity of all studied parameters, except foot inversion-eversion, decreased after 65 min of running (fatigued condition) for 80% of the participants in this study. Furthermore, 60% of the participants showed similarities in the change of periodicity pattern in shank internal-external rotation, coupling, and free torque. Conclusion: The findings indicated that the foot inversion-eversion motion may pose a higher risk of injury than the shank internal-external rotation, coupling, and free torque in the fatigued condition during prolonged running.
For scaling of the gradient of misfit function, we develop a new pseudo-Hessian matrix constructed by combining amplitude field and pseudo-Hessian matrix. Since pseudo- Hessian matrix neglects the calculation of the zero-lag auto-correlation of impulse responses in the approximate Hessian matrix, the pseudo-Hessian matrix has a limitation to scale the gradient of misfit function compared to the approximate Hessian matrix. To validate the new pseudo- Hessian matrix, we perform frequency-domain elastic full waveform inversion using this Hessian matrix. By synthetic experiments, we show that the new pseudo-Hessian matrix can give better convergence to the true model than the old one does. Furthermore, since the amplitude fields are intrinsically obtained in forward modeling procedure, we do not have to pay any extra cost to compute the new pseudo-Hessian. We think that the new pseudo-Hessian matrix can be used as an alternative of the approximate Hessian matrix of the Gauss-Newton method.

In this work, the effect of nonwoven support during fabrication of flat sheet membranes via nonsolvent-induced phase separation, was investigated in detail. It was found that dope solutions with low viscosity tend to penetrate through the nonwoven support during phase inversion, resulting in nonhomogeneous membranes. A simple soaking treatment of nonwoven support prevented such unwanted dope penetration, and resulted in membranes with higher water and solvent permeance performance. The dope penetration through nonwoven was more prominent in solutions with low viscosity, and the nonwoven soaking treatment not effective in solutions with high viscosity.
Based on the transfer-matrix method (TMM), we report the characteristics of the interface states in one-dimensional (1D) composite structures consisting of two photonic crystals (PCs) composed of binary dielectrics A and B, with unit-cell configurations ABA (PC I) and BAB (PC II). The dependence of the interface states on the number of unit cells N and the boundary factor x are displayed. It is verified that the interface states are independent of N when the PC has inversion symmetry (x = 0.5). Besides, the composite structures support the formation of interface states independent of the PC symmetry, except that the positions of the interface states will be varied within the photonic band gaps. Moreover, the robustness of the interface states against nonuniformities is investigated by adding Gaussian noise to the layer thickness. In the case of inversion symmetry (x = 0.5) the most robust interface states are achieved, while for the other cases (x ≠ 0.5) interface states decay linearly with position inside the band gap. This work could shed light on the development of robust photonic devices.
