  • In recent decades, Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) have become the focus of considerable attention in many disciplines, including robot control, where they can be used to solve nonlinear control problems. One of these ANNs applications is that of the inverse kinematic problem, which is important in robot path planning. In this paper, a neural network is employed to analyse of inverse kinematics of PUMA 560 type robot. The neural network is designed to find exact kinematics of the robot. The neural network is a feedforward neural network (FNN). The FNN is trained with different types of learning algorithm for designing exact inverse model of the robot. The Unimation PUMA 560 is a robot with six degrees of freedom and rotational joints. Inverse neural network model of the robot is trained with different learning algorithms for finding exact model of the robot. From the simulation results, the proposed neural network has superior performance for modelling complex robot's kinematics.

  • The inverse kinematics problem of a reclaimer which excavates and transports raw materials in a raw yard is investigated. Because of the geometric feature of the equipment in which scooping buckets are attached around the rotating disk, kinematic redundancy occurs in determining joint variable. Link coordinates are introduced following the Denavit-Hartenbery representation. For a given excavation point the forward kinematics yields 3 equations, however the number of involved joint variables in the equations is four. It is shown that the rotating disk at the end of the boom provides an extra passive degree of freedom. Two approaches are investigated in obtaining inverse kinematics solutions. The first method pre-assigns the height of excavation point which can be determined through path planning. A closed form solution is obtained for the first approach. The second method exploits the orthogonality between the normal vector at the excavation point and the z axis of the end-effector coordinate system. The geometry near the reclaiming point has been approximated as a plane, and the plane equation has been obtained by the least square method considering 8 adjacent points near the point. A closed form solution is not found for the second approach, however a linear approximate solution is provided.

  • A method for solving the inverse kinematic problem of reclaimer is presented in this paper. The reclaimers in the raw yard are being used to dig raws and transfer them to the blast furnaces. The kinematic configuration of the reclaimer is different from that of commercially available robots, because it has a rotating disk with several buckets at the end of the boom to dig raws. The reclaimer has a redundancy due to the rotating disk : the degrees of freedom are greater than the number of forward kinematic equations. A plane equation in the 3-dimensional space is determined by using several points adjacent to the reclaiming point of the raw ores pile. A constraint is obtained from the relation ship of the plane equation and trajectories of the bucket of the reclaimer. Finally, a solution of the inverse kinematics of the reclaimer is determined by a numerical method.

  • An algorithm is developed for solving the inverse kinematic problem of a 6-degree-of-freedom robot with a wrist offset for which the closed form inverse solutions are not obtainable, but knowledge of one joint variable allows closed form solutions of the remaining joint variables. The algorithm does not require Forward Kinematics nor Jacobian but uses the implicit kinematic relationships between joint variables and the given hand position. An iterative back substitution method is used to solve the inversion and the optimal conditions of the convergence are incoporated. An example is given to illustrate the concepts, the solution procedure and its convergency.

  • A novel inverse kinematics solution based on the back propagation neural network (NN) for redundant manipulators is developed for online obstacles avoidance. A laser transducer at the end-effctor is used for online planning the trajectory. Since the inverse kinematics in the present problem has infinite number of joint angle vectors, a fuzzy reasoning system is designed to generate an approximate value for that vector. This vector is fed into the NN as a hint input vector rather than as a training vector to guide the output of the NN. Simulations are implemented on both three- and four-link redundant planar manipulators to show the effectiveness of the proposed position control system.

  • This study aims for determination of cutting work envelope of an articular robot for H-beam cutting. The robot has its own work envelope. The cutting of piece with groove requires the specific position of the torch which contracts the work envelope. This study suggested the new method to determine the cutting work envelope for this case. The method simplified the problem by use of the combination of inverse kinematics and forward kinematics. The method was used for cutting the H-beam with groove. The cutting work envelope was determined easily. The result was verified by 3D simulation system which implements the articular robot with 6 axes and the H-beam in the virtual shop.

  • Interactions of a humanoid with a human are important, when the humanoid is requested to provide people with human-friendly services in unknown or uncertain environment. Such interactions may require more complicated and human-like behaviors from the humanoid. In this work the arm motions of a human are discussed as the early stage of human motion imitation by a humanoid. A motion capture system is used to obtain human-friendly arm motions as references. However the captured motions may not be applied directly to the humanoid, since the differences in geometric or dynamics aspects as length, mass, degrees of freedom, and kinematics and dynamics capabilities exist between the humanoid and the human. To overcome this difficulty a method to adapt captured motions to a humanoid is developed. The geometric difference in the arm length is resolved by scaling the arm length of the humanoid with a constant. Using the scaled geometry of the humanoid the imitation of actor's arm motions is achieved by solving an inverse kinematics problem formulated using optimization. The errors between the captured trajectories of actor arms and the approximated trajectories of humanoid arms are minimized. Such dynamics capabilities of the joint motors as limits of joint position, velocity and acceleration are also imposed on the optimization problem. Two motions of one hand waiving and performing a statement in sign language are imitated by a humanoid through dynamics simulation.

  • In addtion to a basic motion task, redundant manipulators can achieve some additional tasks by optimizing proper performance criteria. Some of performance criteria can be transformed to inequality constraints. So the redundancy resolving problem can be reformulated as a local optimization problem with equality constraints for the end effector and inequality constraints for some performance criteria. In this article, we propose a method for solving the inverse kinematics of a manipulator with redundancy using the Kuhn-Tucker theorem to incorporate inequality constraints. With proper choice of inequality constraints, the proposed method gives a way of optimizing multiple criteria in redundant manipulators.
