  • Real-time hybrid simulation (RTHS) has emerged as an important tool for testing large and complex structures with a focus on rate-dependent specimen behavior. Due to the real-time constraints, accurate dynamic control of servo-hydraulic actuators is required. These actuators are necessary to realize the desired displacements of the specimen, however they introduce unwanted dynamics into the RTHS loop. Model-based actuator control strategies are based on linearized models of the servo-hydraulic system, where the controller is taken as the model inverse to effectively cancel out the servo-hydraulic dynamics (i.e., model-based feedforward control). An accurate model of a servo-hydraulic system generally contains more poles than zeros, leading to an improper inverse (i.e., more zeros than poles). Rather than introduce additional poles to create a proper inverse controller, the higher order derivatives necessary for implementing the improper inverse can be calculated from available information. The backward-difference method is proposed as an alternative to discretize an improper continuous time model for use as a feedforward controller in RTHS. This method is flexible in that derivatives of any order can be explicitly calculated such that controllers can be developed for models of any order. Using model-based feedforward control with the backward-difference method, accurate actuator control and stable RTHS are demonstrated using a nine-story steel building model implemented with an MR damper.

  • This paper addresses the development of inverse compensation techniques for a class of ferromagnetic transducers including magnetostrictive actuators. In this work, hysteresis is modeled through the domain wall theory originally proposed by Jiles and Atherton[1]. This model is based on the quantification of the energy required to translate domain walls pinned at inclusions in the material with the magnetization at a given field level specified through the solution of an ordinary differential equation. A complementary differential equation is then employed to compute the inverse which can be used to compensate for hysteresis and nonlinear dynamics in control design.

  • In this paper, we present and analyze a LQ (Linear Quadratic) inverse optimal state-consensus protocol for continuous-time multi-agent systems with undirected graph topology. By Lyapunov analysis of the state-consensus error dynamics, we show the sufficient conditions on the algebraic connectivity of the graph to guarantee LQ inverse optimality and closed-loop stability. A more relaxed stability condition is also provided in terms of the algebraic connectivity. Finally, a formation control protocol for multiple mobile robots is proposed based on the target LQ inverse optimal consensus protocol, and the simulation results are provided to verify the performance of the proposed LQ inverse formation control method.

  • Interactions of a humanoid with a human are important, when the humanoid is requested to provide people with human-friendly services in unknown or uncertain environment. Such interactions may require more complicated and human-like behaviors from the humanoid. In this work the arm motions of a human are discussed as the early stage of human motion imitation by a humanoid. A motion capture system is used to obtain human-friendly arm motions as references. However the captured motions may not be applied directly to the humanoid, since the differences in geometric or dynamics aspects as length, mass, degrees of freedom, and kinematics and dynamics capabilities exist between the humanoid and the human. To overcome this difficulty a method to adapt captured motions to a humanoid is developed. The geometric difference in the arm length is resolved by scaling the arm length of the humanoid with a constant. Using the scaled geometry of the humanoid the imitation of actor's arm motions is achieved by solving an inverse kinematics problem formulated using optimization. The errors between the captured trajectories of actor arms and the approximated trajectories of humanoid arms are minimized. Such dynamics capabilities of the joint motors as limits of joint position, velocity and acceleration are also imposed on the optimization problem. Two motions of one hand waiving and performing a statement in sign language are imitated by a humanoid through dynamics simulation.

  • An inverse dynamic procedure for spatial multibody systems containing flexible bodies is developed in the relative joint coordinate space. Constraint acceleration equations are derived in terms of relative coordinates using the velocity transformation technique. An inverse velocity transformation operator, which transforms the Cartesian velocities to the relative velocities, is derived systematically corresponding to the types of kinematic joints connecting the bodies and the system reference matrix. Using the resulting matrix, the joint reaction forces and moments are analyzed in the Cartesian coordinate space. The formulation is illustrated by means of two numerical examples.

  • The analysis of actuating forces (or torques) and joint reaction forces (or moments) are essential to determine the capacity of actuators, to control the system and to design the components. This paper presents an inverse dynamic analysis algorithm for flexible multibody systems with closed-loops in the relative joint coordinate space. The joint reaction forces are analyzed in Cartesian coordinate space using the inverse velocity transformation technique. The joint coordinates and the deformation modal coordinates are used as the generalized coordinates of a flexible multibody system. The algorithm is verified through the analysis of a slider-crank mechanism.

  • This paper presents a method for the inverse dynamic anlaysis of mechanical systems. Actuating forces(or torques) depending on the driving constraints are analyzed in the relative coordinate space using the velocity transformation technique. A systematic method to compose the inverse velocity transformation matrix, which is used to determine the joint reaction forces, is proposed. Two examples are taken to verify the method developed here.

  • There have been many studies to control holonomic and/or nonholonomic systems, and nonlinear control problems. However, their approaches require complicated intermediate procedures. Using the Generalized Inverse Method derived by Udwadia and Kalaba in 1992, this study provides two applications to the control of holonomically and/or nonholonomically constrained systems. These applications illustrate the ease with which the equation by the Generalized Inverse Method can be utilized for the purpose of (a) control of highly nonlinear systems without depending on any linearization, (b) maintaining precision tracking motions with the presence of known disturbances, and (c) explicit determination of control forces under the circumstances (a) and (b).
