  • There were two books on astronomy published in 1908. One is "Astronomy (天文學)" written by Jeong, Yeong-Taek (鄭永澤, 1874 ~ 1948), an educator. The other is "Introduction to Astronomy(텬문략 )" written by William Martyn Baird (裵偉良, 1862 ~ 1931), an American missionary. It was known that these two books were translated into Korean as astronomical textbooks of the Korean Empire. We investigated the life of translators, the motivation of writing textbook, and the translators' specialty in astronomy. We also compared the two books in terms of content, orthography of terminology, scale of units, and so forth. We suggest that these books were really utilized as textbooks of astronomy in the modern school in the early $20^{th}$ century in Korea. We also conclude that in astronomy education these two textbooks bridged the gap between the traditional Chinese astronomy of the middle age and modern astronomy from the West.

  • We introduce sample light curves of optical transients discovered by the KMTNet Supernoa Program, focusing on their early discoveries and rapid evolutions decoded in the high-cadence observations of the program. For some sources, we also show their spectra obtained either from rapid Target-of-Opportunity follow-up observations immediately after their discoveries or from regularly-scheduled observations. We expect the program to bring unprecedented insights into what is happening during early phases of various types of optical transients, centered on supernovae.

  • In this article I review the past and current status of solar astronomy in Korea and present some future prospects. Along with a brief historical account on the introduction of modern astronomy to Korea, I describe in detail how solar astronomy in Korea has developed since its birth about 20 years ago. With education of solar astronomers at domestic universities and collaboration with foreign scientists in China, Japan and the U. S., there has been a rapid growth of solar physics in Korea in the past decade. For further advance of solar astronomy in Korea, Korean solar astronomers have to build their own observing facilities and develop instrumentation programs. Also it is very important to bring up manpower competent for these projects.

  • As an enhancement to increase mapping speed of the current ALMA TP array, development of a focal plane array system working at ultra wide frequency range of 275-500 GHz with GPU-based software spectrometers has been carried out since 2015. Major progresses on such component development as wideband DSB mixers, a profiled corrugated horn, receiver optics, LO system and GPU-based spectrometer are reviewed with brief introduction to implication of ALMA 2030 for technical implementation.

  • It is well known that solar and space weather activities can influence the performance and reliability of modern technological system and can endanger human life. Since 2007, the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) has initiated a research project for the construction of Korean Space Weather Prediction Center (K-SWPC) to make preparations for the next solar cycle maximum (~2012). In this talk, we briefly introduce the current progress of KASI activities for K-SWPC; extension of ground observation system, construction of space weather database and network, development of prediction models, and space weather effects. In addition, future plans for KSWPC will be discussed.

  • Since the successful observation by Uhuru, the first astronomical satellite, X-ray astronomy has become one of the rapidly developing fields in astronomy. The scientific results provide us the unique opportunity to understand the high energy nature of X-ray sources. We now know that our galaxy contains many different types of X-ray sources such as the compact X-ray sources, galactic bulge sources in addition to the Sun, the brightest X-ray sources in the sky. In this study we review the general properties of galactic X-ray sources, the characteristics of periodic compact X-ray sources, and bursters as well as the models.

  • One of the main limitations to the ground- based gravitational-wave (GW) detector sensitivity is quantum noise, which is induced by vacuum fluctuations entering the detector output port. The replacement of this ordinary vacuum field with a squeezed vacuum field has proven to be effective approach to mitigate the quantum noise in the interferometer detector and it is currently used in advanced detectors. However, the current frequency-independent squeezed vacuum cannot reduce quantum radiation pressure noise at low frequencies. A possible solution to reduce quantum noise in the broadband spectrum is the injection of frequency-dependent squeezed (FDS) vacuum. We will report the current status of squeezing experiment at KASI and introduce to the EPR (Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen) entangled state of light, which can realize FDS light without the need for an additional, external cavity.

  • KaVA(KVN and VERA Array)는 KVN 3기, 일본 VERA 4기로 구성되어 있다.
