We show how the rotation emission from isolated interstellar Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) can explain the so-called anomalous microwave emission (AME). AME has been discovered in the last decade as microwave interstellar emission (10 to 70 GHz) that is in excess compared to the classical emission processes: thermal dust, free-free and synchrotron. The PAHs are the interstellar planar nano-carbons responsible for the near infrared emission bands in the 3 to 15 micron range. Theoretical studies show that under the physical conditions of the interstellar medium (radiation and density) the PAHs adopt supra-thermal rotation velocities, and consequently they are responsible for emission in the microwave range. The first results from the PLANCK mission unexpectedly showed that the AME is not only emitted by specific galactic interstellar clouds, but it is present throughout the galactic plane, and is particularly strong in the cold molecular gas. The comparison of theory and observations shows that the measured emission is fully consistent with rotation emission from interstellar PAHs. We draw the main lines of our PLANCK-AKARI collaborative program which intends to progress on this question by direct comparison of the near infrared (AKARI) and microwave (PLANCK) emissions of the galactic plane.
The interstellar dust grains are formed and supplied to interstellar space from asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars or supernova remnants, and become constituents of the star- and planet-formation processes that lead to the next generation of stars. Both a qualitative, and a compositional study of this cycle are essential to understanding the origin of the pre-solar grains, the missing sources of the interstellar material, and the chemical evolution of our Galaxy. The AKARI/MIR all-sky survey was performed with two mid-infrared photometric bands centered at 9 and $18{\mu}m$. These data have advantages in detecting carbonaceous and silicate circumstellar dust of AGB stars, and the interstellar polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons separately from large grains of amorphous silicate. By using the AKARI/MIR All-Sky point source catalogue, we surveyed C-rich and O-rich AGB stars in our Galaxy, which are the dominant suppliers of carbonaceous and silicate grains, respectively. The C-rich stars are uniformly distributed across the Galactic disk, whereas O-rich stars are concentrated toward the Galactic center, following the metallicity gradient of the interstellar medium, and are presumably affected by the environment of their birth place. We will compare the distributions of the dust suppliers with the distributions of the interstellar grains themselves by using the AKARI/MIR All-Sky diffuse maps. To enable discussions on the faint diffuse interstellar radiation, we are developing an accurate AKARI/MIR All-Sky diffuse map by correcting artifacts such as the ionising radiation effects, scattered light from the moon, and stray light from bright sources.
I will report recent progress in understanding properties of stellar and interstellar components of the Milky Way Galaxy on the two extremes - ongoing star formation activities in the Galactic center and stellar relics in the halo. Properties of the interstellar medium in the Galactic center and their relationship with star formation activities will be discussed based on by far the largest mid-IR spectroscopic data set in this region. Correlations between stellar kinematics and metallicities in the halo will be presented, along with a discussion on the estimation of fundamental stellar parameters from a set of empirically calibrated isochrones.

We have studied the properties of interstellar turbulence as observed by Boston University-Five College Radio Astronomy Observatory (BU-FCRAO) Galactic Ring Survey (GRS). This observation uses 13CO J=$1{\rightarrow}0$ emission with high spectral resolution of 0.21 kms-1 and covers wide galactic plane regions ($18^{\circ}$ < 1 < $55.7^{\circ}$ and -1 < b < $1^{\circ}$). Firstly, we measured the one dimensional power spectrum of 13CO intensity along the galactic longitude and along the galactic latitude. We found the slope of the power spectrum changes around the molecular ring structure and the center of the galactic plane. Secondly, we explored how the power spectral slope is related with the velocity dispersion of supersonic giant molecular clouds in the GRS. Finally, we suggest the turbulent nature of the interstellar medium is connected with star formation activities in spiral arms.
We have searched for the 2 mm transitions of $H_2COH^+(2_{02}-1_{01})$ and $H_2\;^{13}CO(2_{02} - 1_{01},\; 2_{12}-1_{11},\;and\;2_{11}-1_{10})$ toward the dense interstellar molecular clouds Orion A, TMC-1 and L134N using the FCRAO 14 m telescope. None of the transitions have been detected except the $H_2\;^{13}CO$ transitions toward Orion-KL. We set upper limits for the abundances of the protonated formaldehyde ion $(H_2COH^+)$, which are close to the abundances expected from ion-molecule chemistry.
The neutral component of the interstellar medium (ISM) is segregated into the cold neutral medium (CNM) and warm neutral medium (WNM) as a result of thermal instability. It was found that the CNM--WNM evaporation interface, across which the CNM undergoes thermal expansion, is linearly unstable to corrugational disturbances, in complete analogy with the Darrieus-Landau instability (DLI) in terrestrial flames. To explore dynamical consequences of the DLI in the ISM, we perform a linear stability analysis of the DLI including the effect of thermal conduction as well as nonlinear hydrodynamic simulations. We find that the DLI is suppressed at short length scales via heat transport. The linear growth time of the fastest growing mode is proportional to the square of the evaporation flow speed of the CNM relative to the interface and is typically >10 Myr. In the nonlinear stage, perturbations grow into cusp-like structure protruding toward the WNM, and soon reach a steady state where the evaporation rate is increased by a factor of 2 compared to the initial state. We demonstrate that the amplitude of the interface distortion and enhancement in evaporation rate are determined primarily by the density ratio between the CNM and WNM. Given quite a long growth time and highly subsonic velocities at saturation, the DLI is unlikely to play an important role in the ISM dynamics.
We perform numerical experiments on supernova-driven turbulent flows in order to see whether or not supernovae playa major role in driving turbulence in the interstellar medium. In a $(200pc)^3$ computational box, we set up, as initial conditions, uniformly magnetized gas distributions with different pairs of hydrogen number densities and magnetic field strengths, which cover the observed values in the Galactic midplane. We then explode supernovae at randomly chosen positions at a Galactic explosion rate and follow up the evolution of the supernova-driven turbulent flows by integrating numerically the ideal MHD equations with cooling and heating terms. From the numerical experiments we find that the density-weighted velocity dispersions of the flows are in the range of 5-10 km $s^{-l}$, which are consistent with the observed velocity dispersions of cold and warm neutral media. Additionally, we find that strong compressible flows driven by supernova explosions quickly change into solenoidal flows.

The reanalysis of the previously published abundance pattern of mild barium star HD202109 (${\zeta}$ Cyg) and the chemical compositions of 129 thin disk barium stars facilitated the search for possible correlations of different stellar parameters with second ionization potentials of chemical elements. Results show that three valuable correlations exist in the atmospheres of barium stars. The first is the relationship between relative abundances and second ionization potentials. The second is the age dependence of mean correlation coefficients of relative abundances vs. second ionization potentials, and the third one is the changes in correlation coefficients of relative abundances vs. second ionization potentials as a function of stellar spatial velocities and overabundances of s-process elements. These findings demonstrate the possibility of hydrogen and helium accretion from the interstellar medium on the atmospheres of barium stars.
Young Galactic supernova remnants (SNRs) are where we can observe closely supernova (SN) ejecta and their interaction with the circumstellar/interstellar medium. They also provide an opportunity to explore the explosion and the final stage of the evolution of massive stars. Near-infrared (NIR) emission lines in SNRs mostly originate from shocked dense material. In shocked SN ejecta, forbidden lines from heavy ions are prominent, while in shocked circumstellar/interstellar medium, [Fe II] and $H_2$ lines are prominent. [Fe II] lines are strong in both media, and therefore [Fe II] line images provide a good starting point for the NIR study of SNRs. There are about twenty SNRs detected in [Fe II] lines, some of which have been studied in NIR spectroscopy. We will review the NIR [Fe II] observations of SNRs and introduce our recent NIR spectroscopic study of the young core-collapse SNR Cas A where we detected strong [P II] lines.
