  • In this paper, we present a color interpolation technique based on artificial neural networks for a single-chip CCD (charge-coupled device) camera with a Bayer color filter array (CFA). Single-chip digital cameras use a color filter array and an interpolation method in order to regenerate high quality color images from sparsely sampled images. We applied 3-layer feedforward neural networks in order to interpolate missing pixel from surrounding pixels. And we compared the proposed method with conventional interpolation methods such as the proposed interpolation algorithm based on neural networks provides a better performance than the conventional interpolation algorithms.

  • The objective of this paper is to propose the image interpolation method with pseudomedian filter for Field warping and morphing, and to evaluate and analyze its subjective image quality. The Field warping relatively gives rise to more computing overhead, but it can use the control line to control the warping result with more elaboration. Due to the working characteristics of the image warping and morphing process, various complex geometrical transformations occur and a image interpolation technique is needed to effectively process them. Of the various interpolation techniques, bilinear interpolation which shows above average performance is the most widely used. However, this technology has its limits in the reconstructivity of diagonal edges. The proposed interpolation method is to efficiently combine the bilinear interpolation and the pseudomedian filter0based interpolation which shows good performance in the reconstructivity of diagonal edges. According to the proposed interpolation method, we could get more natural warping and morphing results than other interpolation methods.

  • We propose an adaptive linear interpolation locating sub-pixels. We utilize a pixel-based parameter in the conventional linear interpolation. To optimally obtain the parameter, we propose a generic interpolation structure including a low pass filter and minimum mean square error. We also propose a simple version of the generic interpolation method, which obtain a closed-form solution. Simulation results show that the proposed method is superior to the state-of-the-art methods such as warped distance linear interpolation and shifted linear interpolation, as well as the conventional method such as the linear interpolation and the cubic convolution interpolation in terms of the subjective and objective image quality.

  • Interpolation filters are widely used in many communication and multimedia applications. Polynomial interpolation computes the coefficients of the polynomial according to the input information to obtain the interpolated value. Recently, FIR interpolation method using supplementary filters was proposed to improve the performances of polynomial interpolation methods. In this paper, by combining a weighting factor approach with the supplementary filter method, we propose a weighted interpolation method which can be efficiently used to compute the maximum or minimum values of a given curve using only a restricted number of sample values. With application to the interpolation of normal distribution curves used in XRF systems, it is shown that the proposed approach exhibits improved performances compared with conventional interpolation methods.

  • A local point interpolation method (LPIM) is presented for the stress analysis of two-dimensional solids. A local weak form is developed using the weighted residual method locally in two-dimensional solids. The polynomial interpolation, which is based only on a group of arbitrarily distributed nodes, is used to obtain shape functions. The LPIM equations are derived, based on the local weak form and point interpolation. Since the shape functions possess the Kronecker delta function property, the essential boundary condition can be implemented with ease as in the conventional finite element method (FEM). The presented LPIM method is a truly meshless method, as it does not need any element or mesh for both field interpolation and background integration. The implementation procedure is as simple as strong form formulation methods. The LPIM has been coded in FORTRAN. The validity and efficiency of the present LPIM formulation are demonstrated through example problems. It is found that the present LPIM is very easy to implement, and very robust for obtaining displacements and stresses of desired accuracy in solids.

  • with the increasing popularity of regional studies, the importance of regional data has been recognized dramatically in recent years. However, due to potential problems from the intrinsic characteristics of aggregate regional data for the research, and incompatible regional units between source and target regional data units, the method for reorganizing the regional data units for a given research analysis should be required. In this regard, the purpose of this research is to review the significant interpolation methods for reorganizing the data units and, based on it, to propose the population weighted interpolation method. For the first purpose, areal weighted interpolation method, pycnophylactic method, dasymetric method, area-to-point method were reviewed. The proposed population-weighted interpolation method was applied to the case study of population census regional data in Erie County, NY, compared with areal weighted interpolation method, pycnophylactic method in terms of several statistical characteristics.

  • A numerical study on the use of the momentum interpolation mettled for flows with a large body force is presented. The inherent problems of the momentum interpolation method are discussed first. Numerical experiments are performed for a typical flow involving a large body force. The tact that the momentum interpolation method may result in physically unrealistic solutions is demonstrated. Numerical experiments changing the numerical grid have shown that a simple way of removing the physically unrealistic solution is a proper grid refinement where there is a large pressure gradient. An effective way of specifying the pressure and pressure correction at the boundary by a local mass conservation near the boundary is proposed, and it is shown that this method can effectively remove the inherent problem of the specification of pressure and pressure correction at the boundary when one uses the momentum interpolation method.

  • This paper presents a modified CCI image interpolation method based on the even-odd decomposition (EOD). The CCI method is a well-known technique to interpolate images. Although the method provides better image quality than the linear interpolation, its complexity still is a problem. To remedy the problem, this paper introduces analysis on the EOD decomposition of CCI and then proposes a reduced CCI interpolation in terms of complexity, providing better image quality in terms of PSNR. To evaluate the proposed method, we conduct experiments and complexity comparison. The results indicate that our method do not only outperforms the existing methods by up to 43% in terms of MSE but also requires low-complexity with 37% less computing time than the CCI method.

  • A numerical study on the use of the momentum interpolation method for flows with a large body force is presented. The inherent problems of the momentum interpolation method are discussed first. The origins of problems of the momentum interpolation methods are the validity of linear assumptions employed for the evaluation of the cell-face velocities, the enforcement of mass conservation for the cell-centered velocities and the specification of pressure and pressure correction at the boundary. Numerical experiments are performed for a typical flow involving a large body force. The numerical results are compared with those by the staggered grid method. The fact that the momentum interpolation method may result in physically unrealistic solutions is demonstrated.

  • The purpose of this research is to investigate the effect of sampling frequency on the photoplethysmography (PPG) and to evaluate the performance of interpolation methods for under-sampled PPG. We generated down-sampled PPG using 10 kHz-sampled PPG then evaluated waveshape changes with correlation coefficient. Correlation coefficient was significantly decreased at 50 Hz or below sampling frequency. We interpolated the down-sampled PPG using four interpolation method-linear, nearest, cubic spline and piecewise cubic Hermitt interpolation polynomial - then evaluated interpolation performance. As a result, it was shown that PPG waveform that was sampled over 20 Hz could be reconstructed by interpolation. Among interpolation methods, cubic spline interpolation showed the highest performance. However, every interpolation method has no or less effect on 5 Hz sampled PPG.
