  • This paper is about implementation issues for use of the Internet technology in education. An examination of the current status of virtual university provides guidance for subsequent prototype development. A virtual university is the Internet based process by which students increase their specific knowledge and skills via electronic interaction with content and people. Virtual university enables colleges and universities to provide students and faculty with network access to courseware and educational materials on multimedia servers free from time and geography constraints. In this paper, we present a prototype instruction support system (ISS). The ISS consists of the following components in architecture: Internet, software, hardware, database systems, users, and workflow. The ISS also assists several functions as follows: lecture notes, register processes, attendance checks, built-in boards, grading systems, questions and answers, electronic libraries, chats, and search engines. Our work will provide a guideline for the development of a virtual classroom for distance education and learning.

  • Different from the existing works on coverage problems in wireless sensor networks (WSNs), this paper considers the exposure-path prevention problem by using the percolation theory in three dimensional (3D) WSNs, which can be implemented in intruder detecting applications. In this paper, to avoid the loose bounds of critical density, a bond percolation-based scheme is proposed to put the exposure-path problem into a 3D uniform lattice. Within this scheme, the tighter bonds of critical density for omnidirectional and directional sensor networks under random sensor deployment-a 3D Poisson process are derived. Extensive simulation results show that our scheme generates tighter bounds of critical density with no exposure path in 3D WSNs.

  • Digital textbooks, considered as core textbooks tailored to the abilities and interests of students, provide them with a combination of textbooks, reference books, workbooks, dictionaries and multimedia contents. In this paper, we employ a modified version of the Technology Acceptance Model(TAM), a model which has been widely used and empirically validated to explain why individuals use a particular information technology(IT). This paper proposes that additional variables, such as educational impacts, contents quality, interaction and enjoyment, enhance our understanding of behaviors of pilot school teachers in using multimedia-based digital textbooks as a substitute for traditional paper-version of textbooks. A structural equation model is employed with survey data from 157 pilot school teachers in pilot program supported by Korean government and KERIS(Korea Education & Research Information Service), to empirically assess the strength of the relationships in the proposed model. It is hoped that the results from this study provide meaningful insight into the development and delivery of high quality digital textbooks.

  • Modern technology offers many ways to enhance teaching and learning that in turn promote the development of tools for educational activities both inside and outside the classroom. Many educational programs using the augmented reality (AR) technology are being widely used to provide supplementary learning materials for students. This paper describes the potential and challenges of using GeoGebra AR in mathematical studies, whereby students can view 3D geometric objects for a better understanding of their structure, and verifies the feasibility of its use based on experimental results. The GeoGebra software can be used to draw geometric objects, and 3D geometric objects can be viewed using AR software or AR applications on mobile phones or computer tablets. These could provide some of the required materials for mathematical education at high schools or universities. The use of the GeoGebra application for education in Laos will be particularly discussed in this paper.

  • This paper deals with the process and requirements of a capstone design project performed by undergraduate students. We discuss about the preliminary study for the capstone design, the derivation of a subject, the level descriptor of the subject, and the system requirements. And then, we summarize the results of the capstone design project entitled as Microsoft Azure based IoT (Internet of Things) system which is performed by 4 undergraduate students during 10 months. This system is composed of a Zigbee sensor network, the TCP/IP Internet, an IoT server, and a smartphone application program, with which we can gather the sensor data and control actuators at the far away area.

  • Cancer is a leading cause of death around the world. Education is at the core of cancer prevention activities, especially programs targeting empowering existing public health workforce. In the past 10 years, researchers at the University of Pittsburgh have been building the Global Health Network Supercourse project, a library of over 4500 online lectures and a network of nearly 50000 public health professionals in 174 countries. As of November 2010, the overall number of Supercourse participants from Asia exceeds 7000 participants. The Supercourse network has been investigating methods for Internet based recruitment of cancer prevention professionals in order to network cancer experts locally and globally, including the use of mHealth technologies for cancer research education and for NCD registries. Supercourse is a tool that can offer a solution to the challenges of information sharing, especially in the field of NCDs and cancer. In this paper, we highlight the need for the development of Cancer Supercourse with Satellite in Asia and encourage faculty members from Asia to join the network.

  • The rapid proliferation of wireless networks provides a ubiquitous channel for delivering instructional materials at the convenience of the user. By delivering content through portable devices linked to the Internet, the full spectrum of multimedia capabilities is available for engaging the user's interest. This capability encompasses not only text but images, video, speech generation and voice recognition. Moreover, the incorporation of machine learning capabilities at the source provides the ability to tailor the material to the general level of expertise of the user as well as the immediate needs of the moment: for instance, a request for information regarding a particular city might be covered by a leisurely presentation if solicited from the home, but more tersely if the user happens to be driving a car. This paper presents system architecture to support mobile instruction in conjunction with knowledge-based tutoring capabilities. For concreteress, the general concepts are examined in the context of a system for mathematics education on the Web.

  • The software centered world following the fourth industrial revolution is rapidly approaching us. Countries around the world attach importance to software's ability as one of the key elements for training future human resources. In order to train software centered human resources, each university has designated Software Education as an essential curriculum for not only major but also non-majors. In the past Software Education was an education for a major, but recent Software Education was changed to the essential education that is necessary for all living in the software centered world. In the past the curriculum was focused on software development and implementation-oriented education, but recent curriculum emphasizes sequential arranging and thinking of problem solving. In order to reflect trends in recent Software Education in detail, we integrate Software Education with major concept of Computational Thinking. In this paper, we analyzed the effect of the main concept of Computational Thinking on Software Education for non-majored learners who received Software Education based on Computational Thinking (here refers to learners who major in humanities, social sciences and arts). In addition, research models of satisfaction, self-efficacy, and occupational change was established as the elements of Software Education, and it was found that there was a relation between Computational Thinking and Software Education.
