  • A mathematical model was proposed to describe the behavior of the liquid emulsion membrane(LEM) conraining sodium carbonate as internal stripping reagent. Experimental results of the batch extraction of lactic acid were compared with computed results by using the model. it was found that the model computations could predict fairly well the effects of parameter variations such as the carrier concentration, the stripping reagent concentration, the stirrer speed and the treatment ratio. An attempt has been made to reduce emulsion swelling which is one of the main problem of LEM. As the additives for swelling control, liquid paraffin, n-decanol, cyclohexanone and Span 85 were used. All the additives that were investigated tend to reduce the quantity of swelling to some extent. Cyclohexanone was found not only to reduce the swelling but also to increase largely the acid transport rate.

  • Synaptosomal plasma membrane vesicles (SPMV) were isolated from fresh bovine cerebral cortex by several well-known procedures, and the best procedures was selected by enzymatic and morphological standards. The SPMV isolated by the modified procedure of Smith and Loh showed the highest purity. The specific activities of Na, K-ATPase, acetylcholinesterase and 5'-nucleotidase were about 5, 6-fold, 2, 5-fold and 3, 3-fold, respectively, enriched in the plasma membrane fraction as compared to those of the crude homogenate. Electron microscpic examination also showed that the membranes were in vesicular form.

  • This study was performed to investigate the effect of organic characteristics and feed water solution chemistry on membrane fouling index such as Silt Density Index (SDI) and Modified Fouling Index (MFI). Specifically, Aldrich humic acids (AHA) and Suwannee river humic acids (SHA) were used in SDI/MFI experiments. Higher SDI values were observed with increasing organic concentration. AHA with larger molecular weight (MW) and SUVA (${\approx}UV_{254}/TOC$) resulted in higher SDI values, compared to SHA. The feed solution chemistry (i.e, pH, ionic strength, and hardness) also affects SDI values to some degree. In particular, SDI increased with increasing hardness ($Ca^{2+}$) concentration for AHA. Unlike SDI, the MFI developed on the basis of particle cake filtration theory, was not accurately assessed due to internal fouling by organics such as pore adsorption and subsequent pore blocking.

  • Copper(II) ion-selective PVC membrane electrode based on 2-mercaptobenzoxazole as a new ionophore and o-nitrophenyl octyl ether (o-NPOE) as plasticizer is proposed. This electrode revealed good selectivity for $Cu^{2+}$ over a wide variety of other metal ions. Effects of experimental parameters such as membrane composition, nature and amount of plasticizer, and concentration of internal solution on the potential response of $Cu^{2+}$ sensor were investigated. The electrode exhibits good response for $Cu^{2+}$ in a wide linear range of 5.0 ${\times}$ 10−.6-1.6 ${\times}$ $10^{-2}$ mol/L with a slope of 29.2 ${\pm}$ 2.0 mV/decade. The response time of the sensor is less than 10 s, and the detection limit is 2.0 ${\times}$ $10^{-6}$ mol/L. The electrode response was stable in pH range of 4-6. The lifetime of the electrode was about 2 months. The electrode revealed comparatively good selectivities with respect to many alkali, alkaline earth, and transition metal ions.

  • This study was carried out to determine if Salviae Radix extract (SRE) exerts protective effect against alterations in membrane transport function in rabbits with rhabdomyo lysis-induced acute renal failure. Acute renal failure was induced by intramuscular administration of glycerol (50%, 10 ml/kg). GFR in the glycerol-injected animals was reduced to 11% of the basal value and the fractional $Na^{+}$ excretion was increased to 7.8-fold, indicating generation of acute renal failure. When animals received SRE pretreatment for 7 days prior to glycerol injection, such changes were significantly attenuated. The fractional excretion of glucose and phosphate was increased more than 43-fold and 27-fold, respectively, in rabbits treated with glycerol alone. However, they were increased to 17-and 4.3-fold, respectively, in SRE-pretreated rabbits, and these values were significantly lower than those in rabbits treated with glycerol alone. Uptakes of glucose and phosphate in purified isolated brush-border membrane, the $Na^{+}-K^{+}-ATPase$ activity in microsomal fraction, and cellular ATP levels all were reduced in rabbits treated with glycerol alone. Such changes were prevented by SRE pretreatment. Uptakes of organic ions, PAH and TEA, in renal cortical slices were inhibited by the administration of glycerol, which was prevented by SRE pretreatment. Pretreatment of an antioxidant DPPD significantly attenuated the increase in the fractional excretion of glucose and phosphate induced by rhabdomyolysis. These results indicate that rhabdomyolysis causesimpairment inreabsorption of solutes in the proximal tubule via the generation of reactive oxygen species, and SRE pretreatment may provide the protection against the rhabdomyolysis-induced impairment by its antioxidant action.

  • Dyskeratosis congenita is a rare congenital disorder characterized by a triad of reticular pigmentation of the skin, dystrophic nails, and leukoplakia of the mucous membrane. Sometimes it is associated with bone marrow failure, secondary malignancy and interstitial lung disease. Though it is rare, Dyskeratosis congenita is diagnosed relatively easily when clinicians suspect it. It can be diagnosed just by gross inspection with care. Dyskeratosis congenita should be considered as one cause associated with interstitial lung disease. In Korea, interstitial lung disease with dyskeratosis congenita has not been reported. We report a case and review the literature.

  • Primary hemangiopericytomas of the lung are uncommon sarcomas that arise from pericytes that surround the basement membrane of capillaries and small venules within the lung parenchyma. The presenting symptoms and signs depend on the location of the tumor and radiologic features are not diagnostic. The behavior of pulmonary hemangiopericytomas is difficult to predict and all tumors should be considered potentially malignant. Wide surgical excision remains the mainstay of treatment. We report a case of primary hemangiopericytoma of the lung with a brief review of literature.

  • Background: Photodynamic therapy is a viable option for lung cancer treatment, and many studies have shown that it is capable of inducing cell death in lung cancer cells. However, the precise mechanism of this cell death has not been fully elucidated. To investigate the early changes in cancer cell transcription, we treated A549 cells with the photosensitizer DH-I-180-3 and then we illuminated the cells. Methods: We investigated the gene expression profiles of the the A549 lung cancer cell line, using a DEG kit, following photodynamic therapy and we evaluated the cell viability by performing flow cytometry. We identified the genes that were significantly changed following photodynamic therapy by performing DNA sequencing. Results: The FACS data showed that the cell death of the lung cancer cells was mainly caused by necrosis. We found nine genes that were significantly changed and we identified eight of these genes. We evaluated the expression of two genes, 3-phosphoglycerate dehydrogenase and ribosomal protein S29. The expressed level of carbonic anhydrase XII, clusterin, MRP3s1 protein, complement 3, membrane cofactor protein and integrin beta 1 were decreased. Conclusion: Many of the gene products are membrane-associated proteins. The main mechanism of photodynamic therapy with using the photosensitizing agent DH-I-180-3 appears to be necrosis and this may be associated with the altered production of membrane proteins.

  • We describe the cases of two patients with chronic subdural hematomas who were treated with Oreong-san. The patients' symptoms improved, as verified by brain computed tomography imaging. Oreong-san may control membrane permeability by inhibiting the aquaporin channel of the outer membrane of a hematoma. We speculate that hydrostatic modulation is a key mechanism underlying the effectiveness of Oreong-san in the treatment of subdural hematomas.
