  • This paper describes the performance and internal flow characteristics of two-stage high pressure ring blower. Chamber-type test rig is designed and manufactured for the performance test of the ring blower. Detailed flow characteristics inside the impeller and casing are analyzed by three-dimensional numerical simulation. Throughout numerical simulation, non-uniform inflow to the impeller inlet and reverse flow are observed near the inlet duct of the blower. This non-uniform inflow makes various recirculation flow inside the casing with the complicated shape of casing. Low velocity region is locally formed near the both sides of impeller outlet due to the non-uniform inflow to the impeller, thus deteriorates the performance of a ring blower.

  • Internal flow characteristics for an automobile HVAC have been investigated using a high-resolution PIV technique. The PIV system consists of a 2-head Nd:YAG laser(125 mJ), a high-resolution CCD camera($2K\;{\times}\;2K$), optics and a synchronizer. An automobile HVAC module was used directly. Only the casing was remodeled transparently for capturing flow image and laser sheet beam illumination. Time-averaged velocity field were measured in three temperature control mode. For three temperature control modes, the internal flow characteristics for an automobile HVAC system were evaluated from PIV results..

  • Swing check valve is opened when the flow direction is forward, when the flow is reversed, the valve is automatically closed by back pressure. In this study, the internal flow field analysis of the valve was conducted by Fluent. The working fluid used in the study, using liquefied methane $-165^{\circ}C$ (CH4) and velocity field, pressure field, pressure drop coefficient were simulated by varying separately the opening divergence into four intervals from 0 to 100%. The approximate research result are as follow : When the opening divergence is smaller, it appears high pressure on the upstream side, this value is relaxed when the opening divergence is large. Flow rate coefficient of the valve shows a larger value as the degree of opening becomes larger, confirming that the check valve used in the study is in the effective flow rate counting range.

  • This paper considers a pipeline conveying one-dimensional unsteady flow inside. The dynamics of the fluid-pipe system is represented by two coupled equations of motion for the transverse and axial displacements, which are linearized from a set of partial differential equations which consists of the axial and transverse equations of motion of the pipeline and the equations of momentum and continuity of the internal flow. Because of the complex nature of fluid-pipe interactive mechanism, a very accurate solution method is required to get sufficiently accurate dynamic characteristics of the pipeline. In the literatures, the finite element models have been popularly used for the problems. However, it has been well recognized that finite element method (FEM) may provide poor solutions especially at high frequency. Thus, in this paper, a spectral element model is developed for the pipeline and its accuracy is evaluated by comparing with the solutions by FEM.

  • FEM analysis of cleaning machine was performed. A cleaning machine was designed and measured to develop a cleaning machine with highly improved performance and a real configuration. 3D modeling was conducted using the 3-D design program CATIA V5. In addition, FEM analysis was conducted on the modeled cleaning machine using the ANSYS finite element analysis program and the pressure changes in internal fluid flow were visualized. This result was applied to the new product development of cleaning machines.

  • A preconditioned numerical method for gas-liquid two-phase flows is applied to solve cavitating flow. The present method employs a finite-difference dual time-stepping integration procedure and the MUSCLTVD scheme. A homogeneous equilibrium cavitation model is used. The present density-based numerical method permits simple treatment of the whole gas-liquid two-phase flow field, including wave propagation, large density changes and incompressible flow characteristics at low Mach number. Some internal flows such as convergent-divergent nozzles are computed using this method. Comparisons of predicted and experimental results are provided and discussed.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze and test the flow rate of a 1-inch ball valve used in a thermal power plant. To identify the flow-rate characteristics, numerical analysis was conducted and an experimental apparatus of the valve flow rate coefficient was used to compare the flow coefficient Cv values. To determine the internal pressure distribution, the sites of opening ball valves and flow fields were investigated. In particular, a smaller the valve opening resulted in a more complicated the flow field of the ball. The valve flow characteristic test showed that the Cv value and flow rate increased with increasing valve-opening rate and the secondary function was performed. The pressure drop increased as the valve opening rate decreased. In addition, the experimental results for the flow analysis are similar to the numerical analysis results.

  • Although continuous casting process has highly developed, there still remain many problems to be considered. Specifically, two vortex flows resulting from impingement against narrow walls make a flow field unstable in a mold, and it is directly related to internal and external defects of steel products. To cope with this instability, EMBR (Electromagnetic Brake Ruler) technique has been lately studied for the stability of molten steel flow, and it is revealed that molten steel flow in a mold can be controlled with applied magnetic field. However, it is still difficult to clarify flow pattern in an EMBR caster due to complex correlations among variables such as geometric factors, casting conditions, and the place and the intensity of charged magnetic field. In the present study, flow field in a mold is focused with different conditions of electromagnetic effect. To accurately analyze the case, three dimensional low Reynolds turbulent model and appropriate boundary conditions are chosen. To evaluate the electromagnetic effect in molten steel flow, dimensionless numbers are employed. The results show that the location and the intensity of the applied magnetic field significantly influence the flow pattern. Both impingement and internal flow pattern are changed remarkably with the change of the location of applied magnetic field. It turns out that an insufficient magnetic force yields adverse effect like channeling, and rather lowers the quality of steel product.
