A Research on the Magnitude/Phase Asymmetry Measurement Technique of the RF Power Amplifier Based on the Predistortive Tone Cancellation Technique

  • This paper proposes a novel memory effect measurement technique in RF power amplifiers(PAs) using a two-tone intermodulation distortion(IMD) signal with a very simple and intuitive algorithm. Based on the proposed predistortive tone cancellation technique, the proposed measurement method is capable of measuring the relative phase and magnitude of the third-order and fifth-order IMDs, as well as the fundamental signal. The measured relative phase between the higher and lower IMD signal for specific tone spacing can be interpreted as the group delay(GD) information of the IMD signal concerned. From the group delay analysis, we can conclude that an adaptive control of GD as well as the magnitude and phase is a key function in increasing the linearization bandwidth and the dynamic range in a predistortion(PD) technique.

Linear Characteristics Improvement of X-band TWT Amplifier for Satellite Communication with Linearizer (선형화기를 이용한 위성통신용 X-밴드 TWT 증폭기 선형특성 개선)

  • This paper has analyzed the AM-AM and AM-PM characteristics of 7.9 GHz~8.4 GHz X-band TWT used for satellite communication and improved its linearity and IMD performance by using linearizer. The TWT amplifier with the linearizer shows better AM-AM and AM-PM conversion, and has increased 1 dB compression point by 12.3 dB and $2.0^{\circ}/dB$ phase distortion point by 10 dB. The 3rd order intermodulation distortion, IMD3 is measured to be 37.0 dBc that is 16.2 dB improvement at the operating output. This paper also proposed the measurement method of IMD for high power amplifier, and that TWT amplifier can have better linearity and output power by compensating for the AM-PM characteristics.

Individual Order Intermodulation Distortion Generator Using Series Feedback of Diode and Its Application (다이오드 직렬 궤환을 이용한 개별 차수 혼변조 발생기 및 응용)

  • This paper proposes an individual order predistortion linearizer using intermodulation distortion(IMD) generator for cancellation the third and the fifth IMD of power amplifier. The IMD generator for controlling the third and the fifth IMD consist of common Emitter amplifier and Schottky diode. These signals are generated by series feedback of Schottky diode to obtain the inverse AM/AM and AM/PM characteristics of power amplifier. The individual order predistorters are consisted of individual IMD generator, power splitter and combiner. The test results show that the third and the fifth IMD can be improved by a maximum 13.5 dB and 0.9 dB in case of CW 2-tone signals. Also, the Adjacent Channel Leakage Ratio(ACLR) can be improved 2.3 dB, 2.5 dB at ${\pm}0.885$ MHz, ${\pm}1.23$ MHz offset frequency for CD-MA IS-95 2FA signals.

A Design of Predistorter for Controlling the Amplitude of Low-Frequency IM Signals (저주파 혼변조 신호의 크기 조절에 의한 전치 왜곡 선형화기 설계)

  • In this paper, a new predistortion linearizer for controlling the amplitude of low frequency intermodulation distortion signals is proposed. The low frequency intermodulation distortion(IMD) components are generated by harmonic generator. A vector modulator, modulate fundamental signal with low frequency IMD signals, generates predistortion IMD signals and controls amplitude and phase of them with modulation factors. As a result, this predistorter is suppressed IMD signals of power amplifier effectively. The predistortion linearizer has been manufactured to operate in cellular base-station transmitting band($869{\sim}894\;MHz$). The experimental results show that IMD3 of power amplifier are improved more than 20 dB for CW two-tone signals. Also, it's improved the adjacent channel power ratio(ACPR) more than 10 dB for IS-95 CDMA IFA signals.

A Design of Analog Predistortion Linearizer Using Even Harmonic Signals (짝수 고조파 성분을 이용한 아날로그 전치 왜곡 선형화기 설계)

  • This paper proposes a new predistortion linearizer with controlling intermodulation distortion(IMD) signals. This linearizer achieves independent control of third- and fifth-order intermodulation distortion products using amplitude modulation with even harmonic signals. A vector modulator that modulate fundamental signal with both second- and fourth-order harmonic components generated by harmonic generator circuits, generates the inverse characteristics third-and fifth-order intermodulation signals of power amplifier and controls amplitude and phase of them with each other modulation factors. As a results, this linearizer is suppressed IMD signals of power amplifier effectively. The test results show that the third IMD is cancelled more than 25 dB and the fifth order IMD is cancelled about 18 dB for CW two-tone signals. Also, it's improved the adjacent channel power ratio(ACPR) more than 7 dB for IS-95 CDMA signals.

  • In this paper, we studied the effect of asymmetrical 3rd order IMD of power amplifier due to changes in modulation frequency on IMD cancellation performance. The phase extraction method for determining asymmetric rate for phase distortion of IMD is proposed and the phase difference between lower and upper 3rd order IMD is measured by this method. The phase compensation circuit to decrease the phase difference is also designed and fabricated. From the measurement results using the phase compensation circuit applied to 5 W RF power amplifier fur PCS applications, the 3rd order IMD cancellation performance can be achieved up to 2-tone spacing 1.5 MHz (phase difference within 10$^{\circ}$).

  • 본 논문에서는 안테나의 PIMD 측정에 있어 신뢰성과 재현성에 관한 문제점을 검토하였으며, 향후 새로운 구조의 Anechoic Chamber의 필요성에 관해 기술하였다. 패치 안테나를 일반적인 안테나용 Chamber에서 PIMD를 측정한 결과 재현성에 있어 문제점이 있음을 확인하였으며, 그 원인이 피라미드 구조의 흡수체에 있음을 실험을 통해 확인하였다.

  • In this paper, we identify the memory effect of high power(125W) laterally diffused metal oxide-semiconductor(LDMOS) RF Power Amplifier(PA) by two tone IMD measurement. We measure two tone IMD by changing the tone spacing and the power level. Different asymmetric IMD is founded at different center frequency measurements. We propose the Tapped Delay Line-Neural Network(TDNN) technique as the modeling method of LDMOS PA based on two tone IMD data. TDNN's modeling accuracy is highly reasonable compared to the memoryless adaptive modeling method.

  • A new Predistortor that is designed using Feedforward type is proposed to overcome the nonlinearity of HPA (High Power Amplifier). HPA has the nonlinearity of the gain compression and phase distorton, so digital communication system of multi-carrier TDMA needs the linear RF transmitter. Using IMD (Intermodulation Distortion) of drive amplifier, as Feedforward type, the inverse IMD is coupled to the main loop with variable attenuators, phase shifters, and sub-amplifiers well designed. At the input of main amplifier, the over-coupled IMD surpresses the main amplifier 's IMD. Adjusting the level and phase of IMD at the sub loop, C/I of HPA is better than before correction.

  • In this paper, a R-band hybrid amplifier with the coplanar waveguide(CPW) and the photonic bandgap(PBG) structure is designed and fabricated. The PBG and the CPW techniques are simultaneously employed in amplifier to improve the power added efficiency(PAE) and the IMD(Intermodulation Distortion) in R-band. In this paper, the PBG structures are optimized to obtain matching network. The output impedance of amplifier and the input impedance of PBG are matched to minimize the return loss. The PAE and the IMD were improved 15% and 4.5dB compared with the conventional amplifier, respectively.
