  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of an intermittent aeration mode to reduce the membrane fouling in a submerged membrane process using the specifically devised module (YEF 750D-2). The fluid velocity on the module increased with increasing the supplied air volume, and decreased with the increment of MLSS in the biological reactor. The reduction rate of the fluid velocity was found to be $3\times10^{-4}m{\cdot}min/sec{\cdot}L$ per 1,000 mg MLSS/L increased. In the operation of the intermittent aeration, the intermitted stop of the aeration provoked the formation of a cake layer on the gel layer which was previously formed during the aeration, resulting in the highly increased TMP level. However, the TMP level could be significantly lowered by the subsequent backwashing and aeration that effectively removed the cake along with the gel layer on the membrane surface. In this study, the optimum condition for the intermittent aeration was determined to be aeration for 20 sec and pause for 20 sec.

  • A laboratory scale extended aeration system was installed to study the effects of DO control and intermittent aeration on energy saving and nitrogen removal. The sensors of pH, DO, ORP, MLSS, and WT were installed in the aerator to monitor them and automatically control DO concentration as 2 mg/$\ell$. In the conditions showing nitrate knee on the ORP curves, nitrogen removal rates were kept over 91%. A 72.4 % of energy saving was achieved by intermittent aeration comparing with continuous aeration.

  • The two-stage intermittent aeration activated sludge process (IAP) and dynamic-flow intermittent aeration activated sludge process (DFP) were investigated for the nutrient removal of domestic wastewater. Three sets of IAP and one set of DFP were operated. The fermented settled sludge taken from the primary settling tank was added to two IAP and one DFP as an external electron donor, with one IAP, in which an external carbon source was not added, as a control. All the systems were operated at a sludge retention time of 20 days and a hydraulic retention time of 12 hr. A Higher denitrification rate was observed with the fermented settled sludge for the denitrification compared to the process without the addition of the organic source. The result indicates that the fermented acid from the primary domestic sludge has been proved to be an excellent electron donor for denitrification and biological phosphorus removal with IAP and DFP in treating relatively low C/N ratio(Carbon / Nitrogen ratio) wastewater. Phosphate accumulating organisms have a capability of competing with denitrifiers in the presence of volatile organic acids under anoxic conditions.

  • To prevent surface and underground water pollution, wastewater treatment is essential. Four bench-scale activated sludge units (10 L operational volumes) were operated at 5, 10 and $20^{\circ}C$ for evaluation of treatment efficiencies with typical wastewater from swine housing. The units were set for a 24-hour cycle. As compared to the conventional process, high removal efficiencies for organic substances, nitrogen and phosphorus in swine wastewater were obtained simultaneously with an intermittent aeration process (lAP). The NOx-N produced during an aeration period was immediately reduced to nitrogen gas (e.g. $N_2$ or $N_2O$) in the subsequent non-aeration periods, and nitrification in aeration periods occurred smoothly. Under these conditions, phosphorus removal occurred with the release of phosphorus during the non-aeration periods followed by the excess uptake of phosphorus in the activated sludge during aeration periods. It was confirmed that the lAP had a better ability to remove pollutants under both low temperatures and high nitrogen loading conditions than the ordinary method did. In addition to that, the total emission of $N_2O$ from lAP was reduced to approximately 1/50 of the conventional process for the same loading. By adopting an adequate aeration programme for individual swine wastewater treatment, this system will provide a promising means for nitrogen and phosphorus control without pH control or addition of methanol.

  • The performance of a newly designed wastewater treatment process equipped with an anaerobic and two intermittent aeration tanks operated alternately was investigated. During the experimental period, several types of cyclic operating schedules with different aeration and non aeration time were examined for the optimization. At all modes, the removals of organic matter and SS were highly achieved. With respect to T-N removal, however, the cycle length for aeration on/off affected the efficiencies. At the optimal operating mode, the ORP bending point indicating the disappearance of nitrate was observed. Considering the influent wastewater characteristics and cyclic operating schedules, it can be suggested that T-P removal is much more BOD/T-P ratio and/or its load dependant rather than the aeration on/off time. The results obtained from pilot-scale test showed the competitive advantage of this alternating process through an omission of nitrate recycle and operational flexibility against influent load variations when comparing with other continuous flow processes.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the operation characteristics with aeration time in intermittent aeration membrane bioreactor. The BOD removal efficiency rate of this process was over than 97% regardless of aeration on/off time. To get over than 82% of nitrogen removal efficiency rate, aeration off time needs more than 70 minutes in reactor. Specific denitrfication rate was 2.68 mg $NO_3-N/gMv/hr$ in 40/80 min aeration on/off time, was 2.6 times more than 60/60 min, and 1.4 times more than 50/70 min in 6,300 mg/L of MLSS concentration. Specific nitrification rate was 1.96 mg $NH_4-N/gMv/hr$ in 50/70 min, was 1.4 times more than 40/80 min, but it was effectded little upon nitrification. Microbial activity was effected little according to aeration on/off time, oxygen demend was reduced according to aeration off time increased and microbial concentration increased. The longer aeration off time become, the higher Extraceller Pollymeric Substance (EPS), 50/70 min and 40/80 min in aeration on/off time was increased 1.6 times and 2.7 times, respectively more than 60/60 min because of increase of operation pressure.

  • In this study, variations of the organic and nitrogenous compounds in wastewater were investigated in a single reactor with intermittent aeration. Over 90% of organic and nitrogen removals are accomplished with C/N ratio of 3 : 1 and 20/20 min of aeration/non-aeration period. Longer non-aeration period on the aeration/non-aeration cycle showed more stable nitrogen removal, showing various microbial community in the reactor. From PCR-DGGE analysis, it is conclusive that Dysgonomonas mossii strain Melo40, Eubacterium sp. oral clone JN088, Uncultured bacterium clone SPESB2_718, and Bacterium enrichment culture clone LE are related with the organics and nitrogen oxidation. Uncultured Acidobacteria bacterium clone AKYG487, Lactobacillus harbinensis strain FQ003, Erythrobacter litoralis strain Gi-3, Phytobacter diazotrophicus strain Ls8, and Mycobacterium sp. enrichment culture clone GE10037biofNNA are distinctly appeared under denitrification condition.

  • The effects of relaxation and backwashing on fouling in ultrafiltration were investigated using full-scale membrane bioreactors (MBRs) which operated at a constant flux of 30 LMH. This paper also estimated the feasibility of using intermittent aeration strategies for minimizing the hydraulic resistance to filtration in comparison with the continuous aeration for running MBRs. Multiple cycles of filtration (14.5 min each) and relaxation (0.5 min each) were repeated. Similarly, a backwash was conducted by replacing a relaxation after each filtration cycle for the comparative performance test. The attached cake thickness on the membrane rapidly increased, caused by subsequent no aeration leading to easier combining with gel layer and the formation of heterogeneous layer on the membrane surface. During periodic backwashing, it is expected that gel and thin cake layer might sufficiently be removed by heterogeneous layer. After periodic backwashing, subsequent cake layer formation during time of no aeration was rapid than frequent no aeration, acting as a prefilter and preventing further irreversible fouling. Based on the Pearson correlation analysis, overall period fouling (dTMP/min) and average of all cycles (dTMP/min) were strongly correlated with the on-off period of aeration for operating MBRs.

  • Recent research in composting greenhouse has focused on some of the fundamental properties during the process such as temperature , carbon dioxide content and odors which change as the composting progresses. The composting greenhouse of cattle manure with rice hulls by a forced aeration method without turning is available for the practical proposition. The control of a predetermined temperature range(45-65$^{\circ}C$) is possible if intermittent aeration is used. The carbon dioxide concentration was maintained in the range from 400 to 2650 ppm by the intermittent aeration. The ammonia emission rose rapidly leading to a temperature increase of composting material up to more than 60$^{\circ}C$ for six days. Ammonia emission declined quickly and could hardly be detected after 10 days of running period.

  • The Oxic-Settling-Anaerobic(OSA) process is a modified activated sludge processes for sludge reduction. It is evaluated that the sludge production in OSA process can decrease to 88% because of biomass decay and kinetic parameter($Y_H$ 0.237mgVSS/mgCOD, $b_H$ $0.195d^{-1}$) in anaerobic reactor, when compared with CAS process. However, it has problems caused by sludge reduction such as increase of nutrient loading. In case that the anoxic condition through the introduction of the intermittent aeration for the enhancement of nitrogen removal ability build up and enough rbCOD is suppled, maximum 88% of nitrogen is removed in the OSA process. If the OSA process optimizing the intermittent aeration cycle is applied to the separate sewage system with high rbCOD fraction, it can be converted to advanced process in terms of the sludge reduction and nitrogen removal, simultaneously.
