This paper describes the effect of various molding pressure for Mode I. Mode II interlaminar fracture toughness of carbon fiber reinforced plastic composites by using double cantilever beam(DCB), end notched flexure(ENF) and end loaded split(ELS) Specimen. The value of $G_{IC}$, $G_{IIC}$ as a function of various molding pressure is almost same at 307, 431, 585 kPa, however it shows highest value under 307kPa molding pressure, The SEM photographs show good fiber distribution and interfacial bonding of composites when the molding pressure is the 307kPa.
In this paper, the estimation of dynamic interlaminar fracture toughness on fracture mode II in CFRP(carbon fiber reinforced plastics) laminates in made. Dynamic ENF(End Notched Flexure) apparatus used in this paper is manufactured by suing Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar. The static and impact load history in the CFRP specimen is measured by using manufactured dynamic ENF tester and 3-point bending test is carried out to find the load history. Also dynamic interlaminar fracture toughness can be found by using the J integral obrained from dynamic analysis in consideration of intertia-force effect.
This paper describes the effect of molding pressure, specimen geometries for Mixed Mode I/II interlaminar fracture toughness of carbon fiber reinforced plastic composites by using asymmetrical double cantilever beam(ADCB) specimen. The value of $G_{I/IIC}$ as a function of various molding pressure is almost same at 307, 431, 585 kPa. However it shows the highest value under 307 kPa molding pressure. The effect of $G_{I/IIC}$ due to the change of initial crack length of ADCB specimen was almost negligible in this study. It turns out that the condition for mix mode quasi-static crack growth in ADCB specimen is the ratio of the crack length to that of the specimen, i.e., ${\alpha}/L<0.4$.
Objective : Lumbar foraminal stenosis is an important etiology of lumbar radicular symptomatology and frequent causes of remained symptoms after decompressive surgery. This study was conducted to determine the precise clinical and radiologic diagnosis of lumbar foraminal stenosis, and to demonstrate thorough treatment by decompressive surgery using a minimally invasive technique. Methods : Seven patients with established unilateral lumbar foraminal stenosis according to clinical and radiologic diagnosis were retrospectively studied. All patients underwent combined interlaminar and paraisthmic procedure with partial facetectomy. The outcome of surgery was evaluated and classified into excellent, good, fair and poor. Results : The results were excellent in four patients, good in two, and fair in one during the follow-up. There were no surgery-related complications. Conclusion : Minimally invasive combined interlaminar and paraisthmic approach provides good outcome in carefully selected patients with symptomatic lumbar foraminal stenosis.
In this study, mode II interlaminar fracture phenomena of carbon fabric/epoxy composite for tilting train were investigated. The end notched flexural specimen containing an artificial crack with the thickness of 12.5fl11l was used. The mode II interlaminar fracture toughness was evaluated through a three point bending test and the fractured surfaces were examined through a scanning electron microscope. The experimental results obtained in this study would be applicable in the design and structural analysis of the composite structures.
The stitching process has been widely utilized for the improvement of through-thickness property of the conventional laminated composites. This paper rep0l1s the effects of stitching on the flexural and interlaminar shear properties of multiaxial warp knitted composites in order to examine the performance improvements. Considered parameters are as follows: the stacking regularity of the multiaxial warp knits, the stitch spacings, the stitching types, the stitching location, and the location of compression fixture nose. These parameters have little effect on the flexural and interlaminar shear properties, except for the case of stitching location. Stitching on the $0^{\circ}$ fibers showed the lowest flexural strength and modulus ($12\%$reduction for both properties). The stitch spacing of 5mm resulted 8% reduction in interlaminar strength compared with 10mm spacing.
This study focused on the introduction of the self healing technique for polymeric composites and evaluated the healing efficiency by the use of the interlaminar toughness fracture test. The DCPD (dicyclopentadiene) and ENB (5-ethylidene-2-norbornene) were used for the healing agent and the Grubbs' catalyst was used for the catalyst. According to the results, healing efficiency was found to be 37.9%, 22.3%, 26.3%, 22.8%, 30.8%, 30.8%, 33.0%, 33.4% for mode II fraction of 0%, 20%, 35%, 50%, 65%, 80%, 90%, 100%, respectively.
In this work, the carbon fibers-reinforced carbon matrix composites made with different carbon char yields of phenolic resin matrix have been characterized by mechanical flexural tests for acoustic emission properties. The composites had been fabricated in the form of two-dimensional polyacrylonitrile based carbon fibers during the carbonization process. It was found that the composites made with the carbon char yield-rich of resin matrix result in better mechanical interfacial properties, i.e., the interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of the composites. The data obtained from the acoustic emission monitored appeared to show that the composites made with carbon char yield-rich were also more ductile. From the acoustic emission results, the primary composite failure was largely depended on the debonding at interfaces between fibers and matrix. The interlaminar shear strengths of the composites were correlated with the acoustic emission results.
Over the last decade fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) reinforcement consisting of glass, carbon, or aramid fibers embedded in a resin such as vinyl ester, epoxy, or polyester has emerged as one of the most promising and affordable solutions to the corrosion problems of steel reinforcement in structural concrete. But reinforcing rebar for concrete made of FRP rebar has linear elastic behavior up to tensile failure. For safety a certain plastic strain and an elongation greater than 3% at maximum load is usually required for steel reinforcement in concrete structures. The same should be required for FRP rebar. Thus, the main object of this study was to develop new type of hybrid FRP rebar Also, this study was evaluated to the mechanical properties of Hybrid FRP rebar. The Manufacture of the hybrid FRP rebar was achieved by pultrusion, and braiding and filament winding techniques. Tensile and interlaminar shear test results of Hybrid FRP rebar can provide its excellent tensile strength-strain behavior and interlaminar stress-strain behavior.
The Mode I interlaminar fracture toughness of woven fabric carbon/epoxy and glass/epoxy composites for a train carbody was measured and FEM analysis was conducted. The woven fabric epoxy composite manufactured by hand lay-up, has high stiffness and strength, good resistance for impact, fatigue, corrosion and in-plane failure. The DCB(Double Cantilever Beam) specimen made of woven fabric epoxy composite had the size of 180mm $\times$ 25mm $\times$ 5mm and the insert of 65mm. The Mode I interlaminar toughness of specimen was measured according to ASTM 5528-01. The crack propagation behavior of the DCB specimen was simulated using FEA with cohesive elements that model the adhesive layer between woven fabric plies.
