  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of hot forging on the hardness and impact value of ultra high carbon low alloy steel. With increasing hot forging ratio, thickness of the network and acicular proeutectoid cementite decreased, and than were broken up into particle shapes, when the forging ratio was 80%, the network and acicular shape of the as-cast state disappeared. Interlamellar spacing and the thickness of eutectoid cementite decreased with increasing forging ratio, and were broken up into particle shapes, which then became spheroidized. With increasing hot forging ratio, hardness, tensile strength, elongation and impact value were not changed up 50%, and then hardness rapidly decreased, while impact value rapidly increased. Hardness and impact value was greatly affected by the disappeared of network and acicular shape of proeutectoid cementite, and became particle shape than thickness reduction of proeutectoid and eutectoid cementite.

  • The effect of transformation temperature on microstructural features and their effects on ductility in 0.55%C steels were investigated, compared with in 0.82%C eutectoid steel. The samples were austenitized at 100$0^{\circ}C$ for 30min. followed by quenching in a salt bath in the temperature range of 500 ~ $620^{\circ}C$. It was found that reduction of area(RA) increased with increasing transformation temperature and then, decreased after reaching its maximum value in steels containing pro-eutectoid ferrite less than 6%. The thickness of lamellar cementite was found to be the main factor controlling RA. Additionally, the presence of cementite thickness for the maximum ductility in all the tested steels was observed as about 0.015${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ for tested steels.

  • In an effort to increase the thermoelectric figure of merit by reducing the thermal conductivity, the unidirectionally solidified n-type (Bi, Pb)-Te based alloys which form a $Bi_{2}Te_{3}-PbBi_{4}Te_{7}$eutectic lamellar structure were investigated with the microstructural control at various solidification conditions. PbBi_{4}Te_{7}$ lamellae were grown on cleavage plane(0001) of $Bi_{2}Te_{3}$ and the interlamellar spacing decreased from 10.4 $\mu \textrm{m}$to 3.2$\mu \textrm{m}$ with growth velocity variation from 1.4 \times 10^{-4}$cm/sec to $8.3 \times 10^{-4}$cm/sec. Seebeck coefficient was constant, $\mid$$\alpha$$\mid$=29 $\mu$ V/K regardless of growth direction, growth velocity and temperature gradient. Electrical conductivity showed a tendency to decrease slightly with growth velocity and it parallel to growth direction was about three times as large as perpendicular direction. The figures of merit were varied differently from Seebeck coefficients and electrical conductivities depending on the growth direction, growth velocity and temperature gradients. They showed the relative increase in case of perpendicular direction compared with parallel to growth direction. It is believed to be due to the reduction of the thermal conductivity according to decrease of the interlamellar spacing.

  • Effect of Mn addition on rolling contact fatigue of C-base induction hardened bearing steels has been investigated to develop inexpensive surface-hardened bearing steels with improved resistance to rolling contact fatigue. Fatigue tests were conducted in elasto-hydrodynamic lubricating conditions at a shaft speed of 5,000rpm, under max. Hertzian stress of $492kg/mm^2$. It was found in the C-Mn steels that effective depth of induction hardened layer and amount of retained austenite were slightly increased in comparison with those of C-base steels. finer interlamellar spacing of pearlite in the C-Mn steels was also observed using TEM. Decomposition of retained austenite during rolling contact fatigue was smaller in quantity in the C-Mn steels than C-base steels. This might be associated with enhanced mechanical stability of retained austenite with addition of Mn. Statistical analysis of fatigue life for C-Mn steels using Weibull distribution indicated that improved resistance to rolling contact fatigue was mainly attributed to transformation induced plasticity and mechanical stability of retained austenite.

  • The structures and mechanical property of the unidirectionally solidified Al-Co eutectic alloy were investigated. Al-Co eutectic alloy was unidirectionally solidified with growth rates(R) between I cm/hr and 10 cm/hr in the induction furnace maintaining the thermal gradient (G) at solid-liquid interface, $32^{\circ}C$/cm. The eutectic microstructure was varied with the growth condition(G/R ratio). When the G/R ratio was larger than $8.5{\times}10^{3}^{\circ}C/cm^{2}/sec$, a lamellar structure was formed, But the G/R ratio was smaller than $8.5{\times}10^{3}^{\circ}C/cm^{2}/sec$, a colony structure was formed. It was found that the interlamellar spacing(${\lambda}$) was dependent on the growth rate(R) with the relationship, ${\lambda}^{2}{\cdot}R=constant$. The microhardness of this eutectic alloy increased with increase in the growth rate.

  • In this study tensile and impact properties of three hypo-eutectoid steels containing different micro-alloying elements were investigated in terms of microstructural factors such as pro-eutectoid ferrite grain size, pearlite fraction, interlamellar spacing, and cementite thickness. Yield point phenomenon appeared in all the steel specimens during tensile testing, and ultimate tensile stress was mainly dependent on pearlite fraction. On the other hand, the refinement of austenite grain size caused by the addition of micro-alloying elements resulted in the increment of ferrite volume fraction and carbon contents in pearlite because of the refinement of pro-eutectoid ferrite grain size. As a result, cementite thickness in pearlite increased and had an effect on deteriorating the low temperature impact toughness.

  • To understand effects of cooling rates of coating layer on microstructures and corrosion behaviors of hot-dip alloy coated steel sheets (Zn-5%Al-2%Mg) in a neutral aqueous condition with chloride ion, a range of experimental and analytical methods were used in this study. Results showed that a faster cooling rate during solidification decreased the fraction of primary Zn, and increased the fraction of Zn-Al phase. In addition, interlamellar spacing became refined under a faster cooling rate. These modifications of the coating structure had higher open circuit potentials (OCP) with smaller anodic and cathodic current densities in the electrochemical potentiodynamic polarization. Surface analyses after a salt spray test showed that the increase in the Zn-Al phase in the coating formed under a faster cooling rate might have contributed to the formation of simonkolleite (Zn5(OH)8Cl2·H2O) and hydrotalcite (ZnAl2(OH)6Cl2·H2O) with a protective nature on the corroded outer surface, thus delaying the formation of red rust.

  • Hardness and damping characteristics of fine discontinuous precipitates (DPs) microstructure generated by low temperature long term isothermal aging were investigated in comparison with those of T6 heat-treated microstructure composed of DPs and continuous precipitates (CPs) in Mg-9%Al alloy. In this study, T6 and fine DPs microstructures were obtained by isothermal aging at 453 K for 24 h and at 413 K for 336 h, respectively, after solution treatment at 693 K for 24 h. The DPs microstructure exhibited higher hardness than the T6 microstructure, which is related to the lower (α + β) interlamellar spacing of the DPs. The DPs microstructure possessed better damping capacity than the T6 microstructure in the strain-amplitude independent region, whereas in the strain-amplitude dependent region, the reverse behavior was observed. The damping tendencies depending on strain-amplitude were discussed based on the microstructural features of the T6 and DPs microstructures.

  • It was possible to grow the $Al_{2}O_{3}$ based $Y_{3}A_{5}O_{12}(YAG),ZrO_{2}$ binary and ternary eutectic fibers using micro-pulling down method with a growing rate of 0.1~15 mm/min. While $Al_{2}O_{3}/ZrO_{2}$ showed cellular-lamellar structure, $Al_{2}O_{3}$/YAG and $Al_{2}O_{3}$/YAG/$ZrO_{2}$ternary eutectic fibers showed homogeneous Chinese script lamellar structures. The microstructures of $Al_{2}O_{3}/ZrO_{2}$ binary eutectic fibers changed with solidification rate from lamellar pattern to cellular structure. The interlamellar spacing agreed with the inverse-square-root dependance on pulling rate according to $\lambda$=$kv_p\;{-1/2}$. $Al_{2}O_{3}/ZrO_{2}$ binary eutectic fibers recorded the highest tensile strength of about 1560MPa at room temperature. $Al_2O_3/YAG/ZrO_2$ternary eutectic fiber showed excellent thermal stability to $1200^{\circ}C$ without significant decrease. The maximum strength of ternary eutectic fibers recorded were 1100MPa at $25^{\circ}C$ and 970MPa at $1200^{\circ}C$, respectively.

  • Since the propagation of a short fatigue crack is directly related to the large crack which causes the fracture of bulk specimen, the detailed study on the propagation of the short crack is essential to prevent the fatigue fracture. However, a number of recent studies have demonstrated that the short crack can grow at a low applied stress level which are predicted from the threshold condition of large crack. In present study, the threshold condition for the propagation of short fatigue crack is examined with respect to the microstructure and cyclic loading history. Specimens employed in this study were decarburized eutectoid steels which have various decarburized ferrite volume fraction. Rotating bending fatigue test was carried out on these specimens with the special emphasis on the '||'&'||'quot;critical non-propagating crack length.'||'&'||'quot; It is found that the reduction of the endurance limit of their particular microstructures can be due to the increase of the length of critical non-propagating crack, and the quantitative relationship between the threshold stress .DELTA. .sigma. $_{th}$ and the critical non-propagating crack length Lc can be written as .DELTA. .sigma. $_{th}$, Lc=C where m, C is constant. Further experiments were carried out on the effect of pearlitic structure and cyclic loading history on the length of critical non-propagating crack. It is shown that the length of critical non-propagating crack is closely related to both pearlite interlamellar spacing and cyclic loading history.ory. cyclic loading history.
